It complains about babl (requires 0.0.22, version provided by Fedora
is 0.0.20) and gegl (requires 0.0.18, provided is 0.0.16).

When I tried (forced) to build with the provided versions I ran into
compilation errors so I decided to consult the list first before
 trying to proceed.

babl.org and gegl.org both provide downloads - the announcement probably
should have
noted the dependency; Fedora 9 hasn't yet caught up with all the changes
to the gimp
dependencies.

I don't think F9 is the only distro suffering...

The bottomline appears to be that the Gimp really depends on these
very new versions of babl and gegl.

No problem in Debian Sid: the source distribution compiles without any
problem.

Very new is relative, they are from June. And without GIMP, would any
distribution ever add those libs?

If you want to compile GIMP 2.6 yourself, you can grab the tarball

Please note that there was a glitch in the 2.6.0 tarball on the FTP

use the following information to check that you have the fixed
 tarball:

   filename: gimp-2.6.0.tar.bz2

   MD5 sum: e5ac955fee8b376d431e4693027d7640

I note in the explanation that there is no mention of using CMYK color
model, beyond what is already available in the preview feature. Is
manipulation in the CMYK model in the works for some time in the
future? Does the move to GEGL smooth the path to CMYK in some way?

To answer my own question, I downloaded the plug-in from

and it seems to function with 2.6 ok

[Gimp-user] ANNOUNCE: GIMP 2.6.0

2008-10-01 Thread Sven Neumann
Finally we have done it and released version 2.6.0 of the GNU Image
Manipulation Program. The changes from version 2.4 are best described in
the release notes on

  http://gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.6.html

If you want to compile GIMP 2.6 yourself, you can grab the tarball from
ftp.gimp.org or one of its mirrors:

Binary packages for the various supported platforms are expected to
become available over the next couple of days. The new gimp.org website
will help you to locate the packages for your system:

  http://gimp.org/downloads/

Thanks a lot to everyone who helped to improve GIMP.
