Message Boards

2002-06-03 Thread Kenneth E. Lussier

Hi All,

Does anyone out there have any experience with building/running message
boards? I was asked to find something that was Like the Message Boards
on AOL. This, of course, is difficult for me, since I don't use AOL.
However, the basic things that I think I need are 1) Multiple views
(threaded, topic/tree, etc.) 2) Ability to see new posts only 3) HTML
support (so poeple can post in different colors (people are wierd)) and
3) registration support.

The closest thing that I have found is Zorum
(http://www.zorum.com/portal/forumfeatures.html). Is there anything in
particular that other people are using? Oh, and of course, it has to run
from a Linux server running Apache.

TIA,
Kenny

Tell them HTML is evil and not to use it, then show them that news
server you've secretly been hiding in the corner :)

news does threading, you can set up kill-folders, do all sorts of
neat things with it, and it's easily archivable. Much better than
message boards IMO :)

But that's me, and I'm weird, I *like* using a philips head
screwdriver on philips head screw instead of the far more prevalent
5lb. sledge hammer :)

After looking at several a while back, I decided on

PHP (don't ask. Personal preference, nothing beyond that), the ability to
easily create a new external authentication module, many language modules, and
what I at least got the impression of, a much more open development community.

Completely OT

2002-06-03 Thread pll

I need to buy a digital camera. I want a good one, that's easily
usable with Linux (USB conn. is fine if it works :)

I've been thinking about:

the Nikon CoolPix 995
the Canon G2
the Olympus E20

I've heard that the coolpix went downhill from the 990 to the 995,
and further down hill still to the 5000. There's also a huge price
difference between the 3 I listed above, with the E20 being the most
expensive at $1600 and the 995 being $700.

Anyone else have one of these, or, something else entirely that you
feel strongly in favor of/against? I know very little about digital
photography, and the terms used to descripe the camera capabilities
seem complete foreign to me, coming from the old analog world of SLR
cameras.

Any advice, information, comments, complaints, and/or wisdom would be
greatly appreciated :)

I just bought a Canon S30.
My requirements were:
1. $500 or less
2. 3MP minimum.
3. Either Compact flash or Smart Media.
4. Portability (eg. it's small),
The Canons are CF. S30 is 3MP the S40 is 4. The G2 shares some of the
features. A friend of mine from Atlanta who has a G2 and loves it.).
Here are some URLs

http://www.dcresource.com/
http://dcresource.pricegrabber.com/index.php/ut=cf12c78c18a901e2/

I bought mine mail order from BigApplePhoto.com. They had some problems
with Master Card (not mine, but with their verification). They took my
Discover and upgraded the shipping free. When I called customer service
during normal business hours, I talked to a real live human who was able to
answer my questions. (I had ordered an extra Lithium battery which was back
ordered, but not indicated on my shippment). They were a bit higher (about
$1.00) then the lowest on price grabber, but were higher rated.

The Olympus E20 runs you about $2000. For the same price, you can get the
Canon EOS D60, which I've been drooling over since I first saw it.
6 megapixel (3072x2048), IBM microdrive, uses the same SLR lenses as

Re: Completely OT

2002-06-03 Thread Jerry Feldman

BTW: The Canons (S30, S40, G2) use CF2 and can take an IBM Microdrive.
The battery is a Lithium proprietary rechargable. The battery takes about
an hour to charge fully.

Another camera line to look at is the HP cameras. These are made as a joint
venture with Pentax.
I think the critical issue is to decide what features and price range. The
URLs I posted have reviews and opinions.
The TFT displays are all SLR, but the optical viewfinders in some,
including the Canon, is not.

Another issue is to look at zoom capability. Optical zoom is good, digital
zoom is (IMHO) not.

Heard on the Beeb this morning...

2002-06-03 Thread Bayard Coolidge USG

I took my time coming into work this morning because I was sick yesterday
and still wasn't feeling all that great today. S, that afforded me
the unusual luxury of listening to the BBC World Service News on WBUR(FM)
starting at 0900 EDT. At about 0925 or so, they went to their financial
reports and the lead story there was about how the German government is
going to Linux and IBM, eschewing Microsoft. The reporter pronounced it
correctly, made reference to the apps providers, detailed why the Germans
are doing this (saving them LOTS of money, and giving them the ability to
tailor their systems their way), etc.

I haven't checked the Beeb's web site, so I don't know if an audio file
of it is still available or not. But, I was very, very impressed at how
the story was articulated so that John Q. Public could understand it.

changed the lens housing from metal to plastic and they didn't like the

didn't really bother me, and I like the battery because it charges really fast.

I just bought the G2 last week. Although I have no experience with any other
digicams, I've been studying and drooling for one for a long time. The things
I like the most about it are :

Swivel lcd. I already used it successfully at my kids school show by holding
the camera way over my head and tilting the lcd down so I could see it. Also,
can turn inwards for protection.

4MP. More than enough resolution for me. Makes for fantastic printouts on my
canon printer.

Fantastic battery. It has one of the longest run times of all cameras.

Not too big, not too small. Reasonable lens.

With a cheap 256M (~$95) compact flash, I can store about 250 high res
pictures.

Fairly quick performance. Reviewing pictures takes about 2 seconds each.

Neat to view pictures from video out directly to big-screen tv. :)

Video recording is fun. Not great quality, but usable.

Good luck,

I just noticed that the Mozilla 1.0 Release Party date coincides with
the regularly scheduled Central LUG meeting (but I suppose that the
3-hour time difference is apropos). My last peek at the URL for the NH

subject.
Will there be a Central LUG meeting this month? [Last month, only a

I intend to watch/listen to the party via the DNALounge stream, assuming
it's not swamped. (I wonder if some of those other parties are
streaming to feed to DNA...that would be fun!)
