"Yahoo! Deliveries" is basically an opt-in spam service. If you sign
up for it, you give them permission to share your address with
"carefully selected partners" (read: We sell your e-mail address to
anyone willing to pay us for it) so they can "share special offers
only available to members" (read: so they can bombard you with more
junk mail than anyone could ever handle).

It may not be the authentication method that is the problem, since it
appears to be a standard username/password scheme. It may be that you
aren't a Yahoo Delivers member, and that is the database that they
authenticate against.

Now that I look at this site, I remember trying these directions from

Evolution doesn't support whatever kind of authenticated smtp that
Yahoo inisist upon.

In order to use Yahoo's smtp, you need to be a member of "Yahoo
Deliveries", which I believe is free. The URL with the instructions is:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-04.html.

Ayup! I've been using yahoo for a while now. And, supposedly, you
can relay off their servers for outgoing too, provided you enable
some authentication mechanism. However, I haven't figured out how to
do that yet, and it's none of the auth methods provided with

But yahoo.com does do POP3 mail accessible with fetchmail!

I've been using netaddress.net/usa.net for a number of years now. But
they're starting to charge for accounts. I like it because I can use
fetchmail with it & it's easy to put out there.

Does Yahoo have POP? Anyone know of a free, long term, POPable, web

2002-03-18 Thread Michael Costolo

This is very true indeed. AT&T had to transition a great deal of accounts and there
are plenty of us who got left behind. Repeated emails to tech support, lots of time
spent on hold with customer support got me a lot of "your account will be
transitioned soon" responses, but no email account @attbi.com (not even yet).
They're supposedly working on it now, but only because someone technically inclined
saw a newsgroup post of mine and emailed me directly.

Fortunately I try to avoid using ISP email accounts. I've changed ISPs too many
times and know how hard it is to get everyone to update their address books that I
just give out my Yahoo! address making life simpler.

Maybe, but I would use the "elected" word VERY carefully
here... I know of a few users who are still on the very
edge of even knowing how to turn their system on.

I had to help a family change over last week when they
became totally confused by the crap AT&T wrote (both the
instructions and software). They eventually downloaded
the "conversion software", but it didn't work as
advertised so it was a double whammy for them. I'll bet
there are more than a few customers out there who had no
clue as to what AT&T told them to do and never figured
out what to do (and those that finally did figure out
the instructions may have run into complications due to
the software's "assumption" that M$ was the only supplier
of browser/email tools to be ported/supported).

Oh yes, before suggesting they should have called tech
support, they did, and eventually gave up - then my phone
rang...

In other words, another SNAFU (complements of AT&T)!

I've been pestering Mr. Gelinas about this privately
for some time and no, we cannot simply substitute
attbi.com for mediaone.net because a 1:1 mapping was
not possible due to duplicates in the two domains.

Any AT&T customer who hasn't taken responsibility for
effecting the necessary changes by now despite the
months-long barrage of email, phone and postal notices
from AT&T has effectively elected to be unsubscribed.

No, this is a bad idea since many former mediaone.net users had to change
their user ids. In the case of those who changed user ids, by doing a
change, you will be sending gnhlug email to someone (probably a former
@home user) else.

NO!! There was NOT necessarily a 1:1 change made - there were some
username conflicts whereby the former mediaone.net customers had to
acquire new usernames in the attbi.com namespace.

Those who were so affected should have, by now, realize that they
are no longer seeing traffic from [EMAIL PROTECTED] and if they
care to re-subscribe can do so from their new addresses and notify

2002-03-18 Thread plussier

Mark,

It appears that AT&T has finally done away with the 'mediaone.net'
domain, and now, e-mails to the GNHLUG list are bouncing to any
'@mediaone.net' address.

Can you please remove these addresses from both the 'gnhlug' and
'gnhlug-announce' lists. Anyone with one of these addresses is
no longer receiving the mail anyway, likely unable to unsubscribe
themselves in any case. If they really want to be on this list,
they'll have to re-sub with their new address, since it's not
necessarilly just a domain change. In many cases their username has
changed as well.

Thanks!
