I'm of the opinion that it's better to get something up now and
refine it later. This also defends against stuff falling through the
cracks. Just this past weekend, I suddenly realized (or rather, my
PDA reminded me) that there was a SLUG meeting Monday. I had meant to
send out an announcement weeks prior, but then shit happened at work,
and I totally forgot about it. :-( That was email, not the website,
 but same principle applies.

I think it's just the way of the SLUG. Same thing happens to me monthly! I
have to thank Ben because I finally got on to send something on Sunday and
realized it already went out Saturday!

I believe I have next months announcement ready for a final proof. Maybe I
can break the curse this month!

Re: centralug web site

2006-02-07 Thread Robert E. Anderson
I am for having a single site for all the groups. But I'm not sure that the
wiki meets the needs. I know there are other CMS systems out there that have
to do a better job than the Wiki does. I'm trying one of them now.

I've never been a fan of a Wiki as a main site, it always seems to confusing.
Not that I liked SLUG's old flat site, but at least you didn't get lost.
Last month I started the Plone served website in an attempt to have it be
more collaborative. It's too early to tell if that will work or not. One
thing is certain, it's not as easy to get lost in the Plone site as with the
Wiki.

The obvious down side is that I expect Plone consumes more resources than a
wiki would. But it does look nicer. And so far seem fairly easy to use and
administrate.

If any of the other chapters setup a Drupal or PHP based CMS site I would like
to check those out at well.

Re: New TWiki is up... But...

I also looked at the Skins just to see what can be done.

I assume the features are the same regardless but if anybody cares I liked the
following skins:

http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Plugins/DragonSkin
http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Plugins/HobbesSkin

 My thoughts:

 Oh... shiny!

Seriously, looks nice. I like the increased use of icons and more
 intelligent use of color.

New version still suffers from the problem of wasted space that TWiki
had before. Compare the more economical Wikipedia layout. I'm
thinking that might be worth stealing. Put our logo in the upper-left
corner, tools across the top, popular links on the left

One of the design goals on the existing site was simplicity, both
technical and stylistic. This was both my own personal preference and
the result of feedback that the old site was too busy. Simple sites
are also easier to maintain. People who are already afraid of Wiki
are likely to run and hide if the confronted with tag soup when they
hit edit. That being said, I do think the existing site is rather
 plain, even for my tastes.

I'll check how it looks in Lynx/eLinks when I get a chance.

When it comes to migrating content... I propose the following:
 - Keep the Main web for user pages and other TWiki administrivia.
 - Keep the Sandbox and TWiki webs for what they are.
 - Create one web for all GNHLUG content, regardless of scope.

From my (admitedly somewhat limited) experience with Wiki's, trying to

divide content into solid categories is a lost cause, and often
counter-productive. Drawing artificial barriers just impeads the flow
of information. It also appeared that people had trouble finding
stuff outside the www web, so putting it all together only makes
sense. (This ties in with my current anti-Balkanization theme, in
 case you didn't notice.)

If there needs to be manual labor for moving content from old system
to new, I'll gladly volunteer to do the grunt work.

 More later...
