Fausto,
I applaud Mr. Noronha's desire for stability and
justice, but I'm not sure how he proposes to achieve
this or develop the Shakespeares and Einsteins he is
looking for among Indians disadvanted by an accident
of birth, simply by reserving so many seats for them.
Does putting people currently having lower
intellectual abilities into the same highly
competitive educational environment as people with
higher intellectual abilities help them, or does it
destroy their self-worth when most of them discover
that they cannot compete. I'm not talking about
innate desire and abilities here, but undeveloped ones
competing with highly developed ones.
To truly help those who have been disadvantaged, FOR
WHATEVER REASON, not just their pedigree, isn't it
better to bring their knowledge base and intellectual
abilities up to par in a separate setting, before
throwing them into the den of wolves which the
highly competitive educational system in India
resembles?
Why don't you give us your suggestions, which you
declined to do previously?

But I do not agree that having quotas in the
institutions of higher learning is the correct
approach. I do have suggestions, but I will leave
those for another time. I will only request
you, Mr. Noronha, to find out how the majority of
reserved candidates fare. A few do brilliantly I
concede...but the majority... Incidentally,
You must have heard (in the ET) of the kid who
refused a quota seat. He did not get into IIMA, but
did get into one of the better management schools.
The kid says he has no regrets, he retrained his
self worth.

We don't know how many Shakespeares and Einstins
we are killing unsung
by keeping them illiterate and badly educated. The
faster India offers
social justice to its various groups, the better
chances it has to go
ahead globally. An unjust society is an unstable
one. FN
