[Goanet] SPEAKER RAJENDRA ARLEKAR HAS A LOT TO ANSWER
Propriety demands that Rajendra Arlekar should have immediately resigned as Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly till the current probe against him is over to enable the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) and the Income Tax officials to conduct a fair, impartial and uninfluenced investigation into the source of those entire 72 lakhs he paid last year for that 500 sq mt plot at Porvorim and the further Rs 4, 8,280 he paid towards stamp duty and registration charges. ACB officials are desperately trying to shield Rajendra Arlekar. There needs to be a scrutiny of the call details of telephonic conversations between some senior BJP politicians and the ACB officials on 29th January after the complaint against Rajendra Arlekar was filed. ACB officials in contravention of the law are acting as caged parrots. ACB officers instead of summoning Rajendra Arlekar have instead in an unprecedented move gone to his door step to investigate the case. As part of the investigation to ascertain the source of Rajendra Arlekar's sudden increase in wealth the ACB should scrutinize and probe all the tenders and contracts floated by the Goa Legislative Assembly Secretariat during Rajendra Arlekar's tenure as Speaker. Rajendra Arlekar claims that the Rs 72 lakh plot was purchased on a part bank loan. ACB needs to probe whether there was undue favour shown to Rajendra Arlekar in the granting of that 57 lakhs loan he claims he obtained. Any sale deed with a bank loan would have the date and number of the cheque or draft incorporated in the sale deed. Rajendra Arlekar's sale deed surprisingly is silent on whether the 72 lakhs claimed to have been paid was paid by cheque, draft or cash. Rajendra Arlekar has to also account for the balance 15 lakhs and the further Rs 4, 8,280 he paid towards stamp duty and registration charges. We also need to know as to why on that sale deed the address of the Vendor Dharmanand Kamat was shown as Merces Goa, when Rajendra Arlekar was fully aware that he was a permanent resident of Delhi. Mr. Speaker could you further please enlighten us as to how you managed to get that 500 sq mt plot at the rate of a mere Rs 14, 400 a sq mt when the rate there is over Rs 20,000. Was the balance paid by you under the table? Aires Rodrigues T1 - B30, Ribandar Retreat Ribandar - Goa - 403006 Mobile: 9822684372
Re: [Goanet] Goanet commitment to Goans?
Dear Dr Ferdinando, I'm not sure why I'm a party to this mail, other than the fact that I have previously expressed my dissatisfaction with the selective moderating habits of nearly every Goa-centric net list I have ever been added to by my friend Fred. I have come to the decision that I do not want to be involved in communities that do not enhance my experience of 'Goan-ness', and removed myself from them. And my humble suggestion is that you do the same for your own sanity. Some years ago, bio-feedback was thought to be a kind of new-age hocus-pocus; it is used routinely in scientific studies now.Similarly many scientists are actively studying the effects of acupuncture. People will believe what they want to believe. Find a more supportive environment in which to express your views, is my advice to you. But please do not copy me on Goanet threads, because I have no wish to be involved in them. This note is for you and the moderators, not for public consumption. Re: [Goanet] Quackery on Herald
People ought to know that because of unregulated use of quack remedies around the world medical scientists are rightly testing them in clinical trials. In almost all of these cases, the best and the most objective of these studies show that these remedies are no better than placebos. This is absolutely the case with acupuncture as well. The following editorial entitled Acupuncture Is Theatrical Placebo in the medical journal Anesthesia and Analgesia by a world famous pharmacologist and a prominent neurologist makes this fact very clear: http://www.dcscience.net/Colquhoun-Novella-AA-2013.pdf Here is their concluding statement: QUOTE The best controlled studies show a clear pattern, with acupuncture the outcome does not depend on needle location or even needle insertion. Since these variables are those that define acupuncture, the only sensible conclusion is that acupuncture does not work. Everything else is the expected noise of clinical trials, and this noise seems particularly high with acupuncture research. The most parsimonious conclusion is that with acupuncture there is no signal, only noise. The interests of medicine would be best-served if we emulated the Chinese Emperor Dao Guang and issued an edict stating that acupuncture and moxibustion should no longer be used in clinical practice. No doubt acupuncture will continue to exist on the “High Streets” where they can be tolerated as a voluntary self-imposed tax on the gullible (as long as they do not make unjustified claims). So you are not an MD then, nor a MS or even a NBBS. ie a Doctor of Medicine. A Doctor of 'English Medicine' as it is known in India. In that case you could advise a patient anything, acupuncture, yoga, crystals, meditation... How about this study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19250001 ...RESULTS: Thirty-eight acupuncture trials were identified. Most studies (22/38 = 58%) found no statistically significant difference in outcomes, and most of these (13/22 = 59%) found that sham acupuncture may be as efficacious as true acupuncture, especially when superficial needling was applied to non-points. CONCLUSIONS: The findings cast doubt on the validity of traditional acupuncture theories about point locations and indications. Scientific rationales for acupuncture trials are needed to define valid controls, and the theoretical basis for traditional acupuncture practice needs to be re-evaluated --- THIS, to me, points to a placebo effect ie measurable, observable, or felt improvement in health or behavior not attributable to a medication or invasive treatment administered. --- Your own quoted article below states: '...Study: Placebo or not, acupuncture helps with pain' '...the difference in results for real versus fake acupuncture was small, it suggests acupuncture could have more than a psychological effect, said lead author Andrew Vickers' '...Acupuncture skeptic Dr. Stephen Barrett said the study results are dubious. The retired psychiatrist runs Quackwatch, a Web site on medical scams, and says studies of acupuncture often involve strict research conditions that don't mirror how the procedure is used in the real world.' --- Finally: Are you a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.), a Doctor of Medicine in Acupuncture - M.D.(Acu), or are you register with the Medical Council of India? Re: [Goanet] wrt Patricia Alvares' Healing with Crystals article in the Herald
What Herald has advertised in the interview in question is quackery because of the following reasons: 1. The claims made in the interview perfectly satisfy the dictionary definitions of quackery, which is: A fraudulent claim to medical knowledge; treating the sick without knowledge of medicine or authority to practice medicine. (Taken from Stedman's medical dictionary. Please see: http://www.medilexicon.com/medicaldictionary.php?s=charlatanism) 2. The interview makes the claim that crystal healing is curative. 3. It makes scientific sounding factual claims about the properties of crystals and their effects on the human body that are completely bogus, and can be easily demonstrated to be false by a simple scientific measurement. 4. Under claims of healing there are fraudulent claims about economics and personal finance, such as: The combination of Citrine, Pyrite and Amber will attract wealth, prosperity and abundance. 5. It propagates the superstition of evil eye and various supernatural claims that have nothing to do with healing, such as Certain crystals will give self confidence, enhance creativity, protect from the evil eye, attract love, the right career, etc. Please see: http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/epaperpdf/2212014/2212014-md-hr-17.pdf Now regarding acupuncture, the quote below is not accurate: QUOTE The US FDA approved acupuncture for pain relief in 1996. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/cam/acupuncture/patient/page1/AllPages/Print UNQUOTE .Josebab Colaco The U.S. FDA has only adopted certain requirements to regulate the use of acupuncture needles by qualified practitioners e.g. that they have to be sterile and single use needles. It has not approved acupuncture for anything. Please see the following FDA link: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfCFR/CFRSearch.cfm?FR=880.5580 Acupuncture like other questionable or quack nostrums are used by people who believe in them. They are also tested in clinical trials by medical scientists. That is why FDA has to often rule on their safety. FDA deals with safety and efficacy as two separate issues. First and foremost, it is concerned about safety of all devices or drugs, whether they are effective real medical devices or drugs, investigational real medical devices or drugs whose efficacy is not yet known, or quack medical devices or drugs under investigational use or as placebos. Dirty acupuncture needles can lead to severe infections and further complications causing even death in some cases. The needles also need to be bio-compatible to prevent allergic reactions, etc. That is why FDA has regulated their safe use. But it has not approved acupuncture for efficacy in any condition. Cheers, Santosh On Friday, January 31, 2014 10:35 PM, J. Colaco jc cola...@gmail.com wrote: On Jan 26, 2014, Roland Francis wrote: The common man knows that what Santosh says is right. COMMENT: 1: Nothing I read in the Herald-interview (Patricia Alvares / Tarminder Manchanda) could be classified as quackery which is an unregulated and dangerous practice of medicine, especially as quacks often attempt to discourage patients from consulting their doctor or following their doctor's advice. (This not to say that some 'regulated modern medicine practitioners do not practice dangerous medicine). 2: There is one mis-representative and potentially dangerous (to the non-discerning reader) word in Patricia Alvares' bye-line and that is curative. Otherwise, I would have no issues if any of my patients were interested in utilizing these 'Crystals' to assist in the 'healing' process . as long as they understood from me that there was a difference between healing and cure. 3: My personal take on physicians, illnesses and treatments includes the following: a: Well trained and up to date physicians should know more about illnesses, drug treatments, the drug interactions and side-effects that those who are not well trained and up to date physicians may not be aware of. (This includes lay individuals). b: Unscrupulous and unethical physicians take short cuts mainly for financial gains; and then there are the unscrupulous among the Pharma Reps who offer inducements to physicians in order 'to meet their targets'. c: Another set of the unscrupulous physicians are the ones who would (say) delay referral of patients to the specialists/sub-specialists and the specialists/sub-specialists who would delay the referral back of the patients to the primary (referring) physician after the specialty consult is completed . d: Patients often get totally confused when different doctors give vastly different opinions about the same medical issue, write a whole set of differently-named (but possibly the same generic) medications AND talk bad about
[Goanet] Cricket stadium likely to come up at Bicholim
-- Samir Umarye PANAJI: The Goa Cricket Association has asked the state government to return the 7.5 crore they had paid ten months ago to facilitate the transfer of land at the proposed Sports City in Dhargal. After failed attempts to build an international cricket stadium at Thivim, the GCA were hoping to convince the state government to part with land admeasuring approximately 1,20,000 sq mts at Dhargal. The government had agreed in principle, even accepted a cheque of 7.5 crore -- encashed by the government on March 31, 2013 -- but after waiting for ten months, the GCA has taken matters in their own hands. We decided to look for suitable land ourselves to construct an international cricket stadium. Two sites have been identified but Bicholim looks best placed as of now, said one senior GCA official. The land at Bicholim is learnt to be expansive, almost 3 lakh sq mts. We published advertisements in the newspapers almost a fortnight ago asking to intimate us if there are any objections. So far, nobody has come forward and we are close to buying that land, said the official. We have verbally told the state government to return the money to us but that does not mean we do not need government support. Chief minister Manohar Parrikar is a wellwisher of cricket and we will need him to back us for all the necessary permissions, said the official. Once the land is in GCA's possession, the association will immediately start working on their ambitious project and are expected to complete the stadium within two years. The first step, officials said, would be to complete the ground while work on the other facilities will also progress simultaneously. The GCA are in a tearing hurry to at least start work on the project because of a Bruling that no state can host One-day International matches unless they have stadiums of their own. BCC has made an exception for Karen, who do not have a stadium but has already bought land. They recently hosted India's one-dayer against the West Indies. Once we have the land in our possession, we can stake our claim for a ODI, said another official. Goa last hosted a ODI more than three years ago but that was abandoned without a ball being bowled to give India a 1-0 series victory, their first at home in over two decades.(TOI)

Scientific rationales for acupuncture trials are needed to define valid controls, and the theoretical basis for traditional acupuncture practice needs to be re-evaluated THIS, to me, points to a placebo effect ie measurable, observable, or felt improvement in health or behavior not attributable to a medication or invasive treatment administered. Your own quoted article below states: '...Study: Placebo or not, acupuncture helps with pain' '...the difference in results for real versus fake acupuncture was small, it suggests acupuncture could have more than a psychological effect, said lead author Andrew Vickers' '...Acupuncture skeptic Dr. Stephen Barrett said the study results are dubious. Albert Peres RESPONSE: Albert, I have seen plenty of patients and their relatives with your type of behaviour. Your post and your English have given me enough feedback on you educational level. I have no obligation whatsoever to anyone who demands me to know my qualifications on media. Remember one thing Albert, qualified doctors/clinicians have taken an Oath to alleviate human suffering; and not to cure any illness; which also includes family stress, financial stress, besides patient’s illness. People like you realise too late when one of your own family members get entangled in problems due to your type of conceitedness. I, as a doctor cannot force anyone to follow my advice, take it, or leave it! Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.

[Goanet] O' COQUEIRO IS WITHOUT CHEF PETER
After 28 long years at the famed restaurant O' Coqueiro at Porvorim, Chef Peter Fernandes has suddenly quit from 1st February. The very affable and soft spoken Peter has been a Chef par excellence. A winner of many awards, Peter has a passion for cooking and serving authentic Goan cuisine. Having never comprised on quality Chef Peter always goes an extra mile to satisfy every customer. O' Coqueiro may now never be the same. American restaurant critic and food journalist Craig Claiborne had said Cooking is at once child's play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love. Wishing my dear friend Peter all the very best in his future endeveaours. I am sure he will continue to serve us with care, concern and love as he has always. Aires Rodrigues T1 - B30, Ribandar Retreat Ribandar - Goa - 403006 Mobile: 9822684372
