Re: [Goanet] The Merger of Two Goan Associatons in Toronto G.O.A Can-Orient
The actual AGM will be held in two weeks where the issue will be on the agenda. Today's was a Special AGM where only the proposed constitutional amendments were discussed in great detail and passed as proposed, by those attending. They will be presented to the AGM. For the merger, read my article which will appear in the Goan Voice UK. That includes the view from CanOrient also. Roland. [Goanet] Merger of CanOrient and GOA Toronto
Dear readers Today is a new day. Saiba. I cannot po po on the news that two Goan organisations are intending to merge in Toronto especially Can Orient and the GOA Toronto. Our people are like magnets where like poles repel and unlike poles attract, hence if the above news is true then it must be good news for all of us around the world. Will there be two Presidents, two bank accounts or just one? Goan wealth combined, if co-ordinated, perhaps through the Alliance of Goan organisations could be of benefit to all. I travelled to Toronto in my late teens for the Youth Convention, can't remember the year but it was after the death of Elvis Presley. The richness of the City of Toronto was very visible in all the glass buildings from down town to the habour front. What was strange was to see youngsters having a drink from paper bags just like in the movies. Having spent the whole morning looking for a pub I bumped into Walter of Save Goa Campaign in London. At the time the discussion was on water tables and locals throwing cow dung welcoming German tourists to Goa. With our joint efforts we located a bar in China town and had a go at trying out Molsons, Labatts and Budweiser, beers available on tap. I then asked for CanOrient thinking this is some sort of Chinese beer and everyone looked puzzled. I could not see why because Canada Dry is ginger ale. All the Goan Associations I have come across either have a caju fruit or a coconut palm tree as part of their logos. In my travels I found that people from Bombay were more distant to Goa than folks in London, United Kingdom. CanOrient I was told was mainly Goan people from Karachi. Here again there was no resemblance of having anything to do with Goa, were they ashamed? Just like our people overseas try to avoid our language Konkani. The educated Goan youth that I have come across appear to be *#?x they do not know their arse from their elbow. The Goans from Africa who were administrators imported British admin systems and hence the club houses and organisations we have around the world. Perhaps World Goa Day this year could be a starting point for one merger. Melvyn Fernandes Thornton Heath, United Kingdom 31 March 2014

In response to Melvyn Fernandes' comments below... Jason Manford on neighbour hate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPRmnwIV8Vs Like Melvyn, in England everybody slags the next guy off and in 5-minutes it all is forgotten. Why? Because the British Isles are a both the land of free speech AND of great opportunity. People have been migrating to the area for 1000 years. They will continue to do so. The very individuals who are putting pressure on settlement services today are going to become the start of families who are the tax base of tomorrow. No one remains in Breadline Britain forever. People find their way. They become the drivers of the future economy. One day a koito heads, next a life of work, and finally a Oyster Card carrying pensioner. The wheels of the bus go round and round. Its a modern world, things change. If things don't change, people move. As individuals we experience tough times, but I bet you would be hard pressed to name a single family living in a first-world economy who has remained in a state of poverty for over decade (10-years), or a entire family who has remained at the same socio-economic level and location for more than two generations (say 100-years)... -- Albert Peres afpe...@3129.ca 416.660.0847 cell --- Melvyn Fernandes melvyn at orange.net wrote --- Thu Mar 27 08:38:35 PDT 2014 ... While standing in the line to the ticket office to sort out the fault on my card I thought about the driver's comment and realised that as the wheels of the bus go round and round taking the double decker bus towards the Goan settlement of Wembley he must be coming across other people who look just like me, Goan. This is where I got annoyed as the new arrival Goans having spoilt our name in Swindon are trickling down to populate areas of Wembley and Hounslow in search of employment in Breadline Britain. These people I call koito heads who like the koito are sharp and crooked and given the opportunity will eat you out of house, home and even your job. Their behaviour in Wembley and West London has been commented by other settled Goans as monkeys. Perhaps an upgrade is due if I can call them Portuguese monkeys to differentiate between Niz Goenkars or in other words the meat from the bones that make up what is left of our community. Happy to discuss.

[Goanet] Journey towards soft fascism
As the country prepares to vote in a crucial election, here is a well thought out article on the dangers that we face. It is a must read for all those who value freedom, values and ethics in public life. Journey towards soft fascism KANTI BAJPAIhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/toireporter/author-KANTI-BAJPAI.cms | Mar 29, 2014, 12.04AM IST The general elections are barely a week away and voters must consider how they will vote and with what consequences. The frontrunner in the campaign is BJP, led by Narendra Modi. With its allies, the party may well have enough support for a majority government. What does the rise of Modi represent, and if he becomes prime minister what kind of India will we get? There is every danger that a Modi-led India will be an India marked by soft fascism. At its core, fascism stands for state authoritarianism, intimidation by conservative-minded extra-legal groups, national chauvinism, submission of individuals and groups to a larger-than-life leader, and a Darwinian view of social life (the strong must prevail). A society living under soft fascism is simply a society marked by less extreme levels of authoritarianism, intimidation, chauvinism, submission and social Darwinism. India, at least in the first instance, will feature soft rather than hard fascism because it is big, diverse, and argumentative, and the administrative arm of the government remains weak. Those who want a harder fascism will not be able to exert their will immediately over the length and breadth of the country. But to the extent that the various state governments feature soft fascism as well (many do) and to the extent that the Modi-led elements of BJPhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Bharatiya-Janata-Party prevail in the states, a harder fascism may not be far away. What accounts for the rise of soft fascism? The short answer is: Modi-ology, the preferences of the market (big and small business), middle class disaffection and media. Modi-ology is the view that only Modi can save India, that Modi is the only decisive, effective, clean, visionary and astute leader in the country, and that he has a record in Gujarat which proves he can deliver. In Modi-ology, Modi has delivered human development, economic growth, social stability and good governance, unmatched anywhere else in the land. Many Indians who do not particularly like Modi, BJP or soft fascism increasingly think that Modi is the saviour. It is another thing that virtually every claim of Modi-ology is open to argument and rebuttal. The second force in the rise of soft fascism is the market -- big and small business, especially corporate India. Fascism everywhere depends on the coffers and cooperation of big business. It is no different in India. The uncritical cheerleading of Modi by big business is tactical and rather shameful but is an existential reality. Small businesses are pro-BJP anyway, so it is no surprise that they are backing him. Big and small business are fed up with costly social programmes, ramshackle infrastructure, suffocating regulatory structures (including environmental ones) and interminable procedures; and they think Modi is the medicine for all these ills. Behind the rise of Modi-ology is also disaffection of the middle classes. They are disaffected because they are pinned between the upper classes and the lower classes and for 10 years they were ignored by Congress. The upper classes have done well in a globalising India. The lower classes have either given up on the possibility of doing well or have had some help from various UPA programmes (NREGA etc.). The middle classes therefore hate Congress as well as corruption and the chaos of urban and semi-urban India, and they seek redemption in Modi. Big business and middle classes are helping line up media behind soft fascism. Media is influenced by big business, which funds it through its advertising, and by the middle classes, who work in it. Today, both stand behind Modi and together they have helped rally millions of Indians behind Modi-ology. It is another matter that media may well come to regret its role. Those who were in the media when BJP was last in power seem to have forgotten that this is a party that is not particularly interested in, or indulgent of, journalistic independence. Soft fascism rises, establishes itself and consolidates its hold through the structures and systems of democracy. Even as we celebrate our elections and openness, we should be worried about right-wing opportunism and political exasperation leading to political suicide. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/opinion/edit-page/Journey-towards-soft-fascism/articleshow/32863642.cms
[Goanet] Featured This Week: Wayne Brown and The Virtual Jazz Band ~ Cloud 9
(http://www.virtualjazzband.com/#!store/c1lbt) Featured this week on The Jazz Network Worldwide: Pianist, Wayne Brown with his new CD entitled “Cloud 9” with The Virtual Jazz Band. Wayne Brown’s new release “Cloud 9” has an inspirational story attached to the making of this album which involves long-time friend, flautist, Nigel Scott. Wayne formed the Virtual Jazz Band with a clear goal in mind. He wanted to bring together musicians and singers from diverse musical backgrounds that had a common love for Jazz. There is an underlying message of hope, healing and friendship that is attached to this project. Wayne had decided to re-record the tune “Goodbye Stranger” (which was a hit back in the 80‘s) as an instrumental that features Nigel Scott on flute who had been injured in a tragic motorcycle accident back in 1999. They had reconnected after 13 years, finding that the music they shared together many years prior was used as a source in Nigel’s miraculous healing. We had a dream and through adversity, the power of music and friendship allows us to share this dream with the world. What better place to share this than The Jazz network Worldwide. Many thanks to Jaijai Jackson. Wayne has collaborated with a wide and diverse array of artists as both a writer and producer including Billy Ocean, Ruby Turner, Earth Wind and Fire, Junior Giscombe, Stevie Winwood, Jonathan Butler, George Michael, Janet Kay, Lulu, Yazz and many more, and played with jazz greats such as Coleman Hawkins and Tal Farlow. Wayne studied Jazz at the prestigious Leeds College of Music. After his time at the College he delved into the mainstream music world and went on to sell several million records as a writer and producer with his international top 5 hits “Heartache” and “Goodbye Stranger”. The first album The Jazz Club Volume 1 received international critical acclaim with great support from radio opening doors to performances throughout Europe and the USA. Back in 2010 Wayne was appointed Artistic Director and Chairman of the jury for the Bucharest International Jazz competition which enabled him to meet a wealth of talented young musicians from around the globe. “Wayne Brown brings a wonderful essence of cohesive grooves that make you rock in your chair coupled with a funky rhythmic interplay with a solid foundation that keeps you hooked. “Goodbye Stranger” is a true testament that strong friendships can lift you higher than you can imagine, especially when music is shared and messages are embroidered throughout” says Jaijai Jackson of The Jazz Network Worldwide. [Goanet] Portuguese universities
My post refers to one indian who signs as vm and who says that Portugal ranks last in Europe in regards to higher education. To the contrary Portugal has three universities - Porto, Nova de Lisboa, and Coimbra, ranked in the 300's world top universities. BC The pathetic quality of higher education in colonial Goa must be seen in the context of Portugal's consistently abysmal record , even today it ranks dead last in Europe. But such unacceptably low standards over 50 years since decolonization are much harder to understand, accept or swallow, even as so many other neighboring parts of the country have zoomed ahead to generate and sustain more credible institutions.
Re: [Goanet] Journey towards soft fascism
It is frustrating that people who believe in secular ideals, free market economy and meritocracy are aligning with a Hindu bigot and a despot. How can people be fooled so easily? I am not yet willing to accept that the Indian masses will let such a man come to power at the center. Dear Bernado, 1: A mere three Universities appearing in the top 300 does not provide the total picture. 2: However, it might be worth asking VM to refer us to sources he researched before coming to the conclusion he reached with regard to Portuguese higher education. 3: One site he may NOT have visited is this one: https://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/sites/digital-agenda/files/Portugal%20country%20profile.pdf 4: Fifty+ years post 1961, it is quite weird to still talk about The pathetic quality of higher education in colonial Goa . 5: Is VM saying that the quality of higher education (pre 1961) was higher/lower in Ratnagiri, Savantwadi and Karwar ( areas surrounding Goa)? 6: Is it possible that VM ran out of topics to write on OR he has been unable to tackle the subject of higher education head on . Without using his favorite whipping subject? 7: Am not sure if VM is an expert on higher education (or even education) ... But such unacceptably low standards over 50 years since decolonization are much harder to understand, accept or swallow, even as so many other neighboring parts of the country have zoomed ahead to generate and sustain more credible institutions.

[Goanet] OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF GOA CONGRESS JOHN FERNANDES
Dear Editor/s Goan Observer/Goanet Please publish this letter in your editorial column. Thanks. Stephen Dias D.Paula Last week we were been well informed by Monseratte group, Vijay, with Reginaldo (all in the print) and others, that Valanka and Sardinha should be expelled from Congress for anti party activities and that was HOT news for all of us. Valanka instead of resigning from the Youth Congress, she continues to support Congress thus going against the wishes of her father, which rarely any daughter does. She managed to get herself posted at Bangalore to canvas for the Congress leaders in Bangalore so that she gets away from the local politics, where her father could be hurt. This was a wise decision of her since she was a loyal Congress leader . Although she tried to convince her father but he was adamant because her daughter Valanka did not get her ticket. He is also right for getting agitated since he was deceived by High Command and now he took the decision for joining the other party called Tiramol Congress. Earlier he wanted to join as Independent but somehow he changed his mind, reasons are not well known to us. Today's ( 1.4.2014) news, whether it is April fool Day, or not, Reginaldo says from his own sources/feelers that Valanka is trying to support Churchil, her own father by putting some youth supporters for canvasing against Reginaldo and that she remains as dummy from outside. The High Command I suppose is been informed by the Low Command in Goa, about this development taking place where Valanka is indirectly supporting her own father for Tiramol Congress and that Reginaldo a Congress Candidate for South Goa is likely to get less votes or loose the chances of getting elected as MP. The Goa Congress President John Fernandes is confused man and appears not in proper senses to advice the High Command about what decisions should the High Command to take. Therefore it is advisable that High Command sends a strong political emissary and expert who should be completely NEUTRAL to understand these theories of what Reginaldo and Babush are propagating. This emissary should not come with empty bags in Goa, that is my advice. If this is not taken care and immediately investigated than the Congress in Goa getting elected are surely DIM. The another candidate position is completely BAD as he is allegedly involved with his son mischief which all the people talks in the drugs issue earlier. Hope the LOW Command in Goa takes cognizance of this political development in Goa so that Congress does not lose both the seats in Goa. Stephen Dias D.Paula Mob 9422443110
Re: [Goanet] Portuguese universities
And Coimbra is one of the oldest universities in continuous operation, in the world (since 1290). The University of Coimbra has approximately 20,000 students, and hosts one of the largest communities of international students in Portugal. The quality of output of Indian institutions has much to be desired. It appears that most, if not all, are theoreticians, not much given to practical applications. I know at least one civil engineer who never held a tool in his life, ‘til he came to Australia. How many engineers, bio-medical and micro-biology graduates are working in banks and institutions un-related to their field of study? Why? Compare that to the Escola Medica and Escola Tecnica graduates, where emphasis was on practice followed by the theory behind the practice. Just my thoughts.
