[Goanet-News] BOOK EXTRACT: Instant Chemistry (Cynthia Gomes-James, Bomoicar)
Instant Chemistry Cynthia Gomes-James jadoo...@hotmail.com I had set my sights on St Xavier’s College ever since I was in the ninth standard at St Isabel’s High School in Mazagon. My older brother was a Xavierite and he'd tell me fascinating stories about the college library's stock of *Mad* magazine, which you could even read on campus. Now that was really hep, as we'd say back then. My first day at St Xavier's was like a pilgrimage to a sacred shrine. I was in total awe of the hallways, cavernous classrooms, massive library and bustling canteen agog with clanging pots and pans, laughter and aroma. It sent my adrenaline racing like a Bandra Fast. Then came the ultimate demonstration of instant chemistry. Hello, I am Prof Melky Alvares, he said. I hope you all have a sense of humour. You will be using it a lot while I teach you inorganic chemistry. Prof Melky's classes were always a full house, and seats were reserved in advance even though attendance did not count for promotion. He entered with a shuffling gait and an affable smile, before leading us into the world of inorganic chemistry, recounting struggles and achievements of alchemists and chemists. To demonstrate Newland's Law of Octaves, he sang do re mi. To help us memorise the inner lanthanide series of the Periodic Table -- Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu -- he invented a mnemonic: Certain Praiseworthy Nudist Prime Ministers Sample European Garbage Tidbits. Disgusting Horrible Erotic Tomboys! Why Be Lusty? It's elementary, my dear Watson, was his famous quip to questions about the Periodic Table. He playfully used the boy-girl romance to explain Bohr's atomic theory, and proton-electron bonding. He connected chemistry with history, mathematics and linguistics. And not one to stop at chalk-and-talk, he was among the first in college to teach with overhead projectors, charts, models and films. He urged us to do our own research, and was very pleased when we came back with a tidbit or two. The Khandala seminar for final year students was Prof Melky's brainchild. We bonded in the hill station’s cool breezes, tinged with a haze of mist and spirits of ancient holy men, namely Old Monk. After hours, we were free to play music on two-in-ones brought from home. On the trip with us were Anthony Monteiro (Monty) and Ronald Lobo (Lobo), both brilliant teachers. Melky, Monty and Lobo were the holy trinity of the Chemistry department. For a brief spell, Prof Melky moved to the world of pills and potions, as lab assistant at Merck Sharp Dohme (Merind). He produced key formulations in four hours -- bringing it down from twelve -- but turned down a handsome 400-rupees-a-month salary and returned to St Xavier's for much less. But he was not one to be deterred, even when short of cash. When he took his family to the movies, it was always the upper stall. One Christmas, he and his wife Lumen bought their three boys a shiny red scooter with socks to match. Melky met Lumen through a common relative, Chiko Lopez. At first sight itself, the pair sizzled like a nugget of sodium dropped into a bowl of water. The chemistry was instant and the bond, covalent. The reaction was exothermic and sparks flew. But their wedding on December 26, 1965, at St Michael's Church in Mahim, was an austere chips-and-cold-drinks affair in the church's auditorium, as the the Indo-Pak war had prompted restrictions on food and celebration. Sundays at the Alvares household began with Mass, and rarely ended without a jam session. Alvares Senior was in his element on the violin and harmonica, despite his struggle with asthma. The family spent summer vacations in Goa, and Prof Melky was at ease in his wife's ancestral house in Velsao. He'd joke about the classic opening line -- How thin you have become men! -- that greeted a Bomoicar arriving in Goa. While returning from Goa in the summer of 1967, Prof Melky had to beg the captain of Konkan Sevak to sail back a bit, as his baby Shayne had got left behind in the arms of grandparents who couldn't stop kissing him. The captain agreed, and Shayne was squeezed in through a port hole. At elocution competitions in school, Shayne and his brothers, Lyndon and Duane, recited humorous speeches written by daddy dearest, who when not teaching Chemistry was a lector, cantor and toastmaster. Once when Prof Melky was asked at short notice to chair a debate about whether or not God made junk, he promptly came up with this gem: Oh God, I have to make a speech!Dear God, what am I going to speak about? My God, I’m already speaking! Thank God, I’ve finished! On June 1, 1991, Prof Melky hung up his lab coat and put away his flasks, vials, audio-visuals, chalk

[Goanet] Finally a good doctor
Finally, a good doctor has written about one of the many dangerous forms of quackery being spread in Goa and Goan forums to gullible folk. Here is a nice article by Dr. Francisco Colaco exposing the bogus nonsense called chelation therapy: http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=15896boxid=153945593uid=dat=05/19/2014 Heart Chelation: A pie in the sky? by Dr. Francisco C. Colaco QUOTE By now most of us have heard of “Chelation treatment centres” that claim they can effectively “ bypass bypass surgery”. Such facilities have mushroomed all over the world and there are at least three clinics doing roaring business in Goa. “ You can dissolve your heart blockages without the need of open- heart surgery”, the proponents vouch. Are these claims well founded or just a pie in the sky? Is there medical evidence to substantiate these claims? Or is this another instance of dubious medicine with “ fools rushing in where angels fear to tread”? Heart attacks happen when the flow of oxygen- rich blood to a section of heart muscle becomes blocked. It is thought that by year 2020 India may become the “ heart disease capital of the world”. Not only heart attacks will here occur in younger diabetics, but an accelerated form of the killer- disease is likely to take a heavy toll. Predictably, more and more patients are being subjected to CABG (coronary artery bypass surgery). CABG is a procedure to restore blood flow and reduce the risk of death from coronary blockages. Arteries or veins from elsewhere in the patient's body are grafted to the coronary arteries to “ bypass” narrowings and improve the blood supply to the heart muscle. This surgery can be performed with the heart “ stopped” ( with the patient hooked to a “heartlung machine”) or on a “ beating heart” (the so- called off- pump surgery). CABG has admittedly its own morbidity and mortality. Whenever someone is advised CABG, a natural reluctance overcomes the patient to undergo invasive surgery. Therefore, the sufferers, on their own, or counseled by well-meaning friends (mostly non-medical), seek alternative forms of therapy. Plentiful advice – on blockages being dissolved without surgery – is on offer, from exotic concoctions to enemas! Some take recourse to “healers” and the gullible are led to believe their blockages are “cured”. That many of them later die a sudden unheralded death is another matter… What about “ Chelation therapy”? Is it just another fad? Chelation involves the administration of ethylene-diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) into the bloodstream. It reportedly latches onto heavy metals and toxins that can cause free radical damage to the arteries and thus slows the process of arterial hardening. EDTA is delivered through 40 intravenous infusions over a 28-month course. Each infusion administered on an outpatient basis costs around Rs 2500. Antioxidant vitamins and mineral supplements are added to the infusion. After anecdotal reports claiming benefits of Chelation therapy, the medical community took upon itself the task of conducting a scientific trial called TACT (Trial to assess Chelation therapy). The trial lasted 10 years, cost approximately $31.6 million and its results were recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Subjects randomly assigned to active Chelation infusions showed a slight drop in all cause mortality, incidence of heart attacks, the need for coronary revascularization and hospitalization for angina. Another sub-study of TACT further propelled chelation into the limelight because of its extraordinary effects in diabetics. At first blush, the results seem dramatic. But, there remain doubts and unanswered questions. Results were not statistically significant; it took an awful long time to achieve the desired benefits; no “check” angiograms were done to prove the veracity of claims; a good number of patients dropped out unconvinced of its benefits. Significantly, the USA FDA does not approve Chelation for heart blockages and insurance companies do not cover it. More notably, Dr. Lamas, the TACT study’s lead author, backed away from the idea of making Chelation a standard option. Dr. Steven Nissen, head of cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic holding an even darker perspective lamented that the dubious study could be used to market a potentially dangerous and expensive treatment to patients. Dr. Herrmann, an eminent cardiologist at the University of Pennsylvania, sums up: “I currently don’t recommend Chelation therapy for my patients and no study can change my mind.” Chelation proponents allege that opposition by mainstream doctors is because of their fear that an “effective” alternative will deprive by-pass surgeons of their livelihood. It will be long until the dust finally settles. Until then let’s assume “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. It will do us well to remember that there are more established ways to get

The above post brought me a lot of memories. First our time in the St. Xavier's college in Bastora, and the hydra teacher besides those who came from ex-Chowgule college (I think there were five of you guys). You outshone all of them. :) I was in Mumbai (Bombay) during the Opinion Poll - working as a temporary clerk in Voltas limited and we were boarded in Sodality House in Byculle. Three of us Goans decided to come down, we could not find land transport and we took a ship to Mormugao and came to our dear Goa. We left mv Sarita and saw the crackers and flashes we had Goa was saved The three were: Fernando D'Abreu Noronha, Amaranto de Souza and me. All of us BoB's (Brittos old boys) the company I was working (Voltas Ltd) sacked me, as they would not give me a leave. When I returned with JOY, that we had won it did not bother much at the loss of the job. It was worth the effort. We got many to vote. My late dad, was the carcereiro (jailor) in Mapusa, and Padre Chico Monteiro was my dad's guest of honour, he had his room where my dear Pai lived, and his food was our humble, fish curry and rice with a good recheado mackrell my good mother Dona Estefania was specialist in this. Those days we lived in Corlim (now Khorli) all of us studied in St. Brittos except for my sister who was a green chilly and right now like yours truly she is a red chilly and me turned a pickeled mango - now and age is catching up. I thought I would pen this, asking my good friend Rico to edit it ! Those were the days, politics is disgusting, one does not know who is your friend or foe, but the simply secret is that we put the mind of Christ, and treat others how they would like to be understood. Jesus did not look at Peter and Judas with hate, rather as his friends. Peter also betrayed Jesus, and that too three times and the latter looked at Pedro with compassion rather than condemnation. That broke the Apostle down as he wept bitterly. Thankfully, Goa is not wiped off the map, the Opinion Poll still holds on and we are not yet eaten as batawadas by Delhiwallas. No offense or malice towards anyone. With best wishes, Constantino tino Nazare

[Goanet] Brasil 2014- Copa do Mundo- Impressions from a short journey through North Brasil
My son the junior engineer, acting like a boss these days, determined that we should go to Brasil for the World Soccer Cup and follow the games of Group G- the group of death: USA,Portugal, Germany and Ghana. That's what we ended up doing. We started in Recife a beautiful city with aging infrastructure crazy traffic and a lot of economic activity. We drove around in a stick shift Ford Fiesta rental car and it was a relief to see that we could survive and maybe even thrive in that chaotic traffic. After the games there we drove to Natal, the ancient (over 400 years old) city on the East coast of Brasil. As you enter Natal there is star (of Bethlehem) overhanging the highway suspended from a large cantilever curved concrete beam welcoming you to the city. Quite impressive. Natal is a city perched on the slopes of the dunes of the Atlantic coast. The roads in the city present so many ups and downs that at times it feels like a roller coaster ride. Most of the residential streets are made with cobblestones and they have seen better days. We saw a worker with a horse cart carrying sand that he used to fill the potholes. The Via Costeira on the other hand presents a very nice driving experience and may have even been designed by Ayrton Sena the Brasilian champion race car driver. We drove to Pirangi do Norte in Rio Grande do Norte to see the worlds largest cashew tree. The tree which is about 115 years old covers an area of about 850 Sq. Meters and produces about 17,000 nuts a year. I tested their cashew liquor: excellent but not like our feni. By the way, in Brasil you cannot drink and drive: zero tolerance. Finally we went to Manaus a big city home to about 2 million people, deep in the rain forest on the banks of the Amazon river. The Manaus soccer arena was built just for these games and is a beautiful structure that reportedly carries a price tag of 300 million USD. Many of the locals felt that the money could have been better used to update the aging infrastructure of the grand city, for new schools and so on. We took a three hour boat trip on the River Negro to the confluence with the river Solimoes where both the rivers flow side by side for about 4 miles without mixing due to the temperature differences of the waters: one is at about 20 deg C while the other is at about 28 deg C. The waters of the River Negro are dark and the waters of the Solimoes are sandy colored. On the 22nd we saw the USA Vs. Portugal game with the very loud fans and with the exciting finish . We headed home the next day. Brasil is a huge country almost 8.6 million Sq. Km in area with a population of over 200 Million people and they all speak Portuguese. Brasil GDP (Purchasing Power Parity) was estimated at 2.5 trillion USD in 2013, placing it at number 8 in the world. We only saw a little bit of this great country. There were demonstrations against the games in the neighborhoods, there was a partial transportation strike (partial bus service), the fully armed military police were around projecting a strong presence and maintaining order. The people that we interacted with, were very friendly. The food was good. Beautiful Country. https://www.flickr.com/photos/53242509@N06/sets/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RrDAI7tFzU Best Regards, E. DeSousa
[Goanet] Legendary Goan Footballer Visitação Lobo dies
One of Goa's legendary Footballer Visitaçao Lobo died at the age of 68 in Parra. Vistação played for Sesa Goa a top side in the 60's and 70's. Combining with Albino Fernandes, the duo created terror amongst the opposing defence. If not for the invasion of Goa in 1961, Lobo would have probably played for a Portuguese or European side such was his talent. In 1968 the bharat's asked him to represent them for some friendly matches against the Soviet. He also represented Goa in the Santosh Trophy. I met Visitação a couple of times he was soft spoken and humble a true sportsperson. May he Soul Rest in Peace. BC
[Goanet] The story of a priest
Folks, Here is a video I made in Toronto when my favourite priest (and relative) visited us last week. Fr. Emilio Lobo, now in his late 80's recollects his journey from birth in Zanzibar, to schooling in the Seychelles, to the seminary in Bombay, his first parish there, his return to Tanzania, a move to the USA and a stint in the Seychelles after retirement. Fr. Lobo is currently a resident of the UK. Fr. Lobo was one of the most popular priests, especially among the youth, in Dar es Salaam. The reason was that when you went to him for confession, he actually asked you, from experience, about the sins that you may have committed. All you had to do was answer, yes/no. Penance was usually one Our Father and three Hail Mary's. Towards the end of the video, Fr. Emilio explains the secret behind what he was doing. Who said a priest's life is not interesting? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESQil2KO7Hw Mervyn
Re: [Goanet] {Goanet) Where do parents go wrong
Seeing teenagers congregate in secluded or relatively quiet places to drink, consume drugs and gamble, makes one wonder where they get the money to indulge in such activities. Youngstrs riding fairly new motorcycles or scooters, sometimes three on a single vehicle, go roaring by to get to their destination. Bad weather does not seem to bother them. Police patrols do not bother them. In one situation I have consistently observed that as though they have received a signal, they suddenly take off. A few minutes later a Police Patrol vehicle appears and parks in the spot to intercept the drinking teenagers. After an hour or two the Police vehicle will leve. Sure enough, in 5 minutes or so the teenagers are back, as though some form of communication must be taking place. Growing up, I did not have a single paisa in my pocket, and pocket money was an unheard of concept. My parents could not even afford to get me a bicycle. In these days of affluence, kids have everything. But do they have the work ethic and drive to make something of themselves for their own future ? Occasionally, I see a girl on the pinion seat with her face covered up like the Taliban, so she is not recognizable. Is this the future of Goa ???

-- Forwarded message -- From: Stephen Dias steve.dia...@gmail.com GRAND CELEBRATION OF SAO JOAO IN PANJIM (Exclusive to Herald Café) http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e26JlGtPaiU/U6_tMyqcq-I/AiA/Y3sh1q5OgA4/s1600/100_0491-751229.JPG Sao Joao at Caranzalem In my olden days before the liberation and even some years later, we used to celebrate Sao Joao much different of what nowadays people are been celebrating. Sao Joao has nothing to do with the religious belief and there is not even any connection being said in the Bible about this celebration. It has become a routine or so called traditional day which falls on 24th June, 2014 which our old generation were celebrating Sao Joao by jumping in the wells. It need not be their own well but could be even their neighbor's wells. This day is a seasonal day which all the wells becomes full due to the saturated rains which is at the peak and thereafter the wells level starts falling down. The ancestors decided that could be an ideal day for celebration of Sao Joao, and there may be little connection made up with St John de Baptista. The big fun is all the families makes different kind to dishes such as Pork Soropotel, Café Real, Cabidel, Fish Mayonnaise, Pulau, Makerols with Recheado etc and with a bottle of Feni, Moscatel, Vinho Porto, Champanhe, etc Some people used to go to rivers, lakes, bunds or called Bandar to jump and swim with the glass of bottle in hand and drink in the glory of Sao Joao while in sea and even swimming. There were some bets also whoever brings out the bottle from the sea, a prize was offered. The retrieved bottle was given to all those present to drink and enjoy. Whole day this fun was there and late in the evening when they reach home a Ladainha was said and again the drinking mood was continued with dances and food in various halls. The elders at home were cooperating with the youngsters to celebrate Sao Joao Now, the scenario every year is changing depending upon the mood of people, financial burden, and other activities like watching serial, movies etc in TV, and not mixing up with the neighbors or friends. People have become selfish and the mood of Sao Joao is diminishing slowly. To make the things worse we have now all the wells polluted with garbage thrown in the wells, in sea, rivers and people cannot enjoy the fun of Sao Joao as per our old tradition. I have witnessed this year a different type of Sao Joao a sort of new style of celebrating as people at Campal dug within 24 hours a big area just opposite of Dayanand Bandodkar Footbal ground of size about 60 square metres covered with huge tarpaulin where girls and boys seen jumping and bathing with the water splashing from the top piping made of several holes in the pipe with the water pressure so that there is a continuous flow of spring type of water. I believe this arrangement was done and sponsored by Dy. Mayor of CCP Mr Kabir Pinto Makhija, on his personal capacity since this day happened to be his birthday. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Le8NC1Z7JdI/U6_u6PCcYDI/AiU/S1P6N0dWJkw/s1600/100_0494.JPG Photo from Campal https://images-blogger-opensocial.googleusercontent.com/gadgets/proxy?url=http%3A%2F%2F1.bp.blogspot.com%2F-nMnJjOIVRpw%2FU6_u61bd70I%2FAiY%2F5vYU9m5BUs0%2Fs1600%2F100_0495.JPGcontainer=bloggergadget=arewriteMime=image%2F* Sponsor for Campal celebrationsSimilarly people celebrated at Tonca, Caranzalem , D.Paula at Cacra, , St Cruz and St Ines etc. with same kind of arrangement of having piping with holes and bathing. This year in Taleigao people could not celebrate Sao Joao as they were disappointed with the owner of a big housing colony which they have denied entry in their swimming pool; even they were checked out by the police force. I have some few photographs which is attached, taken by me, from these different places where people enjoyed Sao Joao. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dA0SibBnLjc/U6_tLW9n57I/Aho/gYTaQEU4Lvk/s1600/100_0493-744188.JPG Celebrations in Tonca http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YdkRkSsWJSM/U6_tNycscnI/AiM/uyeSrl57l-0/s1600/100_0490-755376.JPG Caranzalem celebrations http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L44lNz8_88k/U6_tMHijEeI/Ah0/DErrLo-IH-0/s1600/100_0492-748213.JPG Caranzalem revellers I feel bad that they could not enjoy on traditional way, as the wells are badly contaminated with polluted materials like garbage, sewage, and bad environment including mining at certain remote places and even they have not spared the Mandovi River. I feel, the Sao Joao is dying with slow poison from the industries that are polluting our wells. Time will come there won't be Sao Joao in future years in Goa. Stephen Dias D.Paula Date: 26.6.2014

The Prime Minister’s attention would also be drawn as to how Atmaram Nadkarni was promoting his family interests by even getting his close relative Dattaprasad Lawande appointed as the Assistant Solicitor General. The cabinet status given to the Advocate General should be withdrawn for his misusing the battalion of personal staff given to him. Nepotism has clearly to be weeded out. Such form of corruption not only lowers the prestige and importance of the high Constitutional post, but brings it to utter ridicule. Prime Minister Modi needs to know that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar high-handedly while citing high inflation hiked Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni’s fees from five lakhs to eight lakhs a month for his appearances before the High Court besides Rs 75,000 a day on his every visit to Delhi regardless of whether he appears before the Supreme Court or not. Besides this fees are charged to Government Corporations, who are being milked to the hilt. Why should Goa’s tax payers be burdened with India’s highest paid Advocate General while the State’s coffers are in dire straits. Infact the financial crisis claimed by the State, is of its own making by such wasteful expenditure. The Prime Minister’s intervention will be sought to slash the Goa AG’s exorbitant fees and bring it on par with other states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be urged to order an independent probe into the huge assets acquired by Atmaram Nadkarni particularly over the last two and half years. The Advocate General is a very high constitutional post. But today it has sadly been virtually reduced by Atmaram Nadkarni to a commercial venture converting the office like the ‘Merchant of Venice’. Atmaram Nadkarni’s socialising with Judges is undoubtedly highly objectionable. It is contrary to the diktat of the Chief Justice of India that advocates and Judges should not socialize. Atmaram Nadkarni has lost all moral authority to continue as the Advocate General of Goa. Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be cautioned against the high level lobbying initiated by Atmaram Nadkarni to now be a Supreme Court Judge which would be catastrophic for the country. [Goanet] BOOK EXTRACT: Instant Chemistry (Cynthia Gomes-James, Bomoicar)

[Goanet] Lucky escape for Bicholim girl as dog bites crude bomb, dies
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM: Close on the heels of crude bomb that exploded in a house in South Goa recently, a family in Bicholim taluka had a lucky escape when a crude bomb exploded when a dog bit it in front of a house at Dhabdabo-Bicholim on Sunday evening. According to sources, the dog belonging to Dinesh Mandrekar went in the neighbour’s compound and bit a crude bomb, which was kept outside the house that triggered explosion. His 14 year old girl had lucky escape from the explosion. The incident occurred in the evening at about 6.30 pm. Being a Sunday the family of Dinesh Mandrekar from Dhabdabo Bicholim was at home while his 14 year old daughter Dikhsa was studying. After finishing her studies Diksha went out of the house and her dog- Bhalu followed her. “Bhalu never used to ventures beyond the limits of the house. Today he came out along with me and he was just infront of me.” Diksha recalled “after smelling something he directly went into the compound of the nearby house and the next thing that i remember is the explosion and huge cloud of smoke that engulfed the entire area.” Diksha was so frightened by the sound that she immediately rushed into the house while all the family members came out after being alerted with the bang that was heard almost two kilometres away. “The smoke remained for a long time and when we went there we found that the dog was lying dead with his mouth ripped off and blood coming out from it. The explosion was such that both the jaws of the dog were blasted off and he died on the spot” Dinesh Mandrekar told. There are about three houses within close proximity of the explosion and the girl had a lucky escape after the explosion. The Bicholim police was immediately rushed to the spot and registered a complaint. The police found another live crude bomb next to the dead dog so the bomb squad and the dog squad was summoned. “After the live bomb was fond just next to the dead dog we called the bomb squad and the dog squad to comb the entire area.” PI, Rupen Shetgaonkar told Herald adding “the dogs were taken to all the three houses near the explosion but they did not find anything.” “We have registered a case under explosive act against unknown person and through investigation will be carried out.” Shetgaonkar said. Meanwhile, the Animal Rescue Squad chief, Amrut Singh who also rushed to the spot told that one such case was also reported at Saleli Valpoi where a dog was killed because of such explosion. “We demand with the general public to be on alert and inform us if there are any suspicious movements in the jungle area especially during the evening or at night.” Amrut singh told. “These type of bombs are made for killing wild animals but now even domestic animals are getting killed. It was luck that there were no human casualties reported here but such bombs are difficult to trace and the hunters plant them late in the evening and then they are collected in the morning. But, by chance if they fail to remove them then it would pose a big danger as these bombs explodes after pressure is exhorted on them.

[Goanet] Fw: Muhhammed Ali Jinnah
Subject: Muhhammed Ali Jinnah Muhammed Ali Jinnah AN AMAZING HISTORICAL FACT, PROBABLY KNOWN TO VERY FEW. Roots of Muhammed Ali Jinnah Here are some interesting facts on the Lohana roots of Mohammad Ali Jinnah the founding father of Pakistan. He is the grandson of Premjibhai Thakkar (Gondal), a Lohana, who, to support his family, entered into the trading of fish in the coastal town of Veraval. His business, however, clashed with the strong (vegetarian) moral ethics of the Lohanas and as a result he was ostracised from the community. He made enough money in this trade and attempted to rejoin the community. He also discontinued the fishing business. However, the Lohana leaders did not accept his request to rejoin the community. Think about the course of history, if they had not had inflated egos and had allowed him to come back! Premjibhai's son Punjalal Thakkar (Jinnah's father) was enraged at his father's humiliation and reacted like any other Lohana - with equal and opposite force. He adopted Islam and changed the names of all his four sons. However, he continued to use his Gujarati nickname: Zino (pronounced Jinno in old fashioned Gujarati) which means 'skinny.' Jinno`s son - Mohammad Ali - changed his family name to Jinnah - the nickname of his converted father. Jinnah's first marriage in 1892 was the result of his mother urging him to marry his cousin Emibai before he left for England to pursue higher studies. However, Emibai died a few months later. His second marriage took place in 1918 to Rattanbai Petit, a Parsi lady who was 24 years his junior. Rattanbai converted to Islam when she married Jinnah and took on the name Maryam Jinnah. In 1919, she gave birth to their only daughter, Dina Wadia. Dina was born to Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Maryam Jinnah in London in 1919 - shortly after midnight on August 15, 1919. As Stanley Wolpert's Jinnah of Pakistan records: Oddly enough, precisely twenty-eight years to the day and hour before the birth of Jinnah's other offspring, Pakistan. Dina had a rift with her father when she expressed her desire to marry a Parsi-born Indian, Neville Wadia. According to M C Chagla in Roses in December, Jinnah, a Muslim, disowned his daughter after trying to dissuade her from marrying Neville. Dina Wadia is the only direct living link to Jinnah and the nation of Pakistan which claims her father as ‘Father of the Nation’. Dina's descendants, including her son Nusli Wadia, who runs Bombay Dyeing, are part of the Wadia family and reside in India as she married and stayed in India after the partition of India. So, here is the fact. Gandhiji, who spearheded the movement for independent India, is aptly regarded as ‘Father of India’. Gandhi and Jinnah (father of Pakistan), are both sons of Saurashtra, (old Kathiavad) Gujarat. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! [Goanet] WATER SPORTS AT AIVAO CARANZALEM SIMILAR TO BAMBOILIM WATER SPORTS ARE UNDER THREAT
Dear Editor Mr Ajay The Goan St Ines-Panjim Dear Sir, I am once again reminding the Editor The Goan, that when we have discussed this matter of Aivao Village Caranzalem water sports project during my visit to your premises and informed you that this project ( Aivao) comes under CRZ violation and that the inquiry conducted by GCZMA headed by Retired Session Judge Afonso Araujo and his team had given his verdict on the spot that there is a prima facia and the project certainly violating CRZ rules. The Judge also told the Contractor in-charge of the project who was present at the site and also present was Dr. Joe D'Sousa member of GSBB and self ( Stephen Dias Retd Scientist of NIO). The Judge directed his team member to prepare a Show Cause Notice to the National Institute of Water Sports Authority ( NIWSA) and GSIDC Mr Sanjeet Rodrigues. Surprisingly no Show Cause Notice is issued so far by The Member of GCZMA Mr Srinet . The Goan is requested to take it up this matter seriously as it amounts to violation of CRZ laws.. Goencho Ramponkarancho Ekvott ( GRE) president Agnelo Rodrigues has demanded the Directorate of Fisheries today on 30th june 2014 ( as per the news report today from a section of Press), that their project should not be renewed and no NOC should be granted to the company for conducting activities for water sports at Bambolim beach hereafter. This project is similar to our Aivao-Caranzalem where the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) is also undertaking the huge and much bigger project similar to Bambolim beach water sports. Since these activities interfere and disrupt fishing activities of traditional fishermen from Aivao and adjacent areas upto Bambolim , Cacra and Taleigao , we feel that this project should be reviewed by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar as well as Minister of Forest and Environment Alina Saldanha. These localities are known to be fish breeding points and variety of fish are found in abundance. These water sports project at the National Institute of Water Sports at Caranzalem is in full swing and many columns of concrete pillars are found erected for the building construction which includes swimming pools and other facilities for the water sports etc ( Photos taken today ( 30.6.2014) may be seen for information). The fishermen from Caranzalem -Aivao also feels if Water Sports is approved, it can harm their fishing activities which is a threat to the livelihood of hundreds of traditional fishermen. The message is loud and clear to the Member Secretary Mr Srinet who has promised that he will take care of this project and if required drop this project since it violates the CRZ laws. So far no action is being taken inspite of complaint lodge by Dr. Joe D'Sousa, Retd Prof of Goa University and member of GSBB, and also one of the member of GCZMA, Dr Antonio Mascarenhas, Former Senior Scientist of NIO, who promised me, that he will take care of this issue when it comes for discussion during the forthcoming meet. He also feels that this project is under CRZ violation. The Goan is requested to take it up this issue which is similar to the Bambolim water sports project which GRE is putting up their foot not to get it renewed . Rules should be the same to all kind of Water Sports if they violate CRZ. laws. 4 Attachments Preview attachment 100_0501.JPG 100_0501.JPG https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2ik=7e9ef40b4eview=attth=146edc8b082a3d1dattid=0.1disp=saferealattid=f_hx211sed0zw Preview attachment 100_0500.JPG 100_0500.JPG https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2ik=7e9ef40b4eview=attth=146edc8b082a3d1dattid=0.2disp=saferealattid=f_hx212uc71zw Preview attachment 100_0499.JPG 100_0499.JPG https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2ik=7e9ef40b4eview=attth=146edc8b082a3d1dattid=0.3disp=saferealattid=f_hx2136kx2zw Preview attachment 100_0498.JPG 100_0498.JPG https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2ik=7e9ef40b4eview=attth=146edc8b082a3d1dattid=0.4disp=saferealattid=f_hx215djj3zw
[Goanet] GOACAN calls on Goa Government to stop the overcharging and exploitation of consumers of Goa Dairy milk products.
- Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help other CONSUMERS to be better informed. --- GOACAN calls on Goa Government to stop the overcharging and exploitation of consumers of Goa Dairy milk products. --- GOACAN has called on the Government of Goa to protect thousands of consumers from exploitation tomorrow due to the increase in rates of Goa Dairy milk products which will be sold in milk sachets having the old printed MRP rates. This overcharging and exploitation has been perpetrated in the past as well which resulted in thousands of consumers being cheated of their hard earned money. It may be noted that Goa Dairy plans to increase the price of its various milk products from 1st July 2014 and the service provider has indicated that they propose to use the old milk sachets having the old printed MRP rates till the stocks last. This has been stated in the circular issued to its milk booth operators ref: GMU: MKTG: Rate:223 dated 28th June 2014. It may also be noted that the collection of new rates beyond MRP by using old milk sachets with old MRP printed, amounts to violation of the Packaged Commodities Rules. This violation will result in the seller, retailers and milk booth operators being fined Rs 2000/- for a violation on a single packet. This is not the first time that Goa Dairy has increased the rates of its various milk products and used the old milk sachets having the old printed MRP rates. In the past the Department of Legal Metrology has booked Goa Dairy for this offence and they have compounded the offence and paid the necessary fines. In letters to the Controller Legal Metrology Department Shri. V.R.Naik and Director Department of Civil Supplies Consumer Affairs Smt. Deepali Naik, GOACAN has called for their immediate intervention to stop the cheating of thousands of consumers of Goa. GOACAN has called on these authorites to instruct officials of the Goa State Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Ltd not to increase the prices of its products from 1st July 2014 until and unless the new milk sachets are printed and ready for use. GOACAN has also alerted the concerned departments that despite this instruction if old Goa Dairy milk sachets are used and the new rates are collected from 1st July then cases will be registered by the Department of Legal Metrology against all those dealers, retailers milk booth operators who take amounts beyond the printed MRP. GOACAN has also impressed on the authorities to intervene to avoid a situation wherein consumers approach the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums under the Consumer Protection Act 1986 to stop this exploitation of the consumers in Goa. Copies of the letters have been sent to the Chief Minister, Secretary Legal Metrology, Secretary Civil Supplies Consumer Affairs and North South District Collectors. -- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK - promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mail: goa...@gmail.com -

[Goanet] Drug abusers in Goa now 13-14 year olds
-- - Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help CONSUMERS to be better informed about the impact of SOCIAL ISSUES on their lives. - Drug abusers in Goa now 13-14 year olds Anisha Francis http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/toireporter/author-Anisha-Francis.cms, TNN | Jun 29, 2014 PANAJI: Doctors in Goa are concerned about the increasing prevalence of drug abuse among Goan teenagers. It's a worrisome trend; and the middle-class is the worst hit. We are seeing a sharp increase in cases of school students, some as young as 13 and 14 years, hooked to recreational drugs. In older teens, we also see addiction to opiate drugs, says Dr Ashish Srivastav, who runs the child and adolescent clinic at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB). There's a marked decrease in age of initiation of drug use, say experts who earlier used to treat youngsters of 17 and above. According to the last study conducted by the United Nations International Drug Control Programme in 2002, the mean age of drug use initiation in Goa was 17.4 years in boys and 15.9 years in girls. Increase in general awareness and easy access to medical care may be contributing factors to this trend, says Srivastav. In most cases though, the parents are clueless about their children's drug problems. They bring them to the clinic for various other issues-poor grades in school, problems in concentration or sudden withdrawal from family and friends. It is only after a few sessions alone with the counsellor that the child opens up and admits to being dependant on narcotics, he explains. Even then, it is a sticky situation, as the child begs us not to tell his parents. But to able to continue treatment, we have to inform the parents, who don't usually take the news very well, he explains. It's a combination of factors that leads such young teens into drug and alcohol dependency -for one, their parents may indulge them with way too much money, and are unable to spend enough time to supervise how they spend it. It appears that drugs are also available more easily these days, quite often it is a peer who supplies the stuff, he adds. At Chaitanya Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre in Tivim, there are 10 to 15 youngsters admitted for narcotic addiction at any given time. Even though we only admit patients over 18 years, most of them have a history of drug use starting from their early teens. Their studies suffer, they drop out of school or college and many of them have other psychotic disorders as well due to prolonged substance abuse, by the time they are brought to rehab, says Jinu Joseph, who runs the facility. They are given medication to help deal with cravings, but it is the structured programme of group therapy, recreation and relaxation techniques and family sessions that can help in the healing process. We insist that the family visits often, and the youngster has to be re-taught how to be social again, says Joseph. Srivastav urges parents to make it a point to know their child's circle of friends well, and to look out for signs of drug use right from the early teens. Parents need to be tactful, it does not help to constantly spy on, or nag the child, to take an authoritative approach. The important thing is to be open and friendly. The younger we are able to identify a drug user, the more willing he will be to quit the habit, he adds. tnn http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Drug-abusers-in-Goa-now-13-14-year-olds/articleshow/37416823.cms

(http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/randifaylimitededition) (http://www.randifay.com) Featured This Week On The Jazz Network Worldwide: Singer, Songwriter Rändi Fay With Her New CD Release “Falling”. Rändi Fay's new CD release “Falling” is a developing genre, an all-original blend of jazz, blues, latin and swing called “lyrical jazz”, reminiscent of old standards with a contemporary flair sure to be a hit on The Jazz Network Worldwide. (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/randifaylimitededition)Music is the core of Rändi Fay’s heart. Her latest release “Falling” captures the essence of the lyrical and melodic ambiance that compliments her vocal style. Catchy rhythms bring this collection of songs to a new way of listening to the templates of older standards with ‘new ears’. Recorded at Rock Garden Studio in Appleton, WI and co-produced with Marc Golde, with collaborations with cellist Hans Christian and trumpeter Bob Levy added the finishing touches to a venture of hallmark steps in the development of her unique niche “lyrical jazz”. Also featured is the fantastic musicianship of: Greg Pagel- keyboard, organ accordion, Bob Balsey- guitar, Bob Levy- horns, Mick Maloney- bass, Kurt Risch- percussion and Kevin Crocker- drums. Creating a song is a rush: the inspiration might come in thought, or a scent, or a phrase and all of a sudden these intricate lyrics start to emerge, and almost simultaneously, melody, rhythm and harmonies come in to flesh it out. Add in the textures of instrumentation and before you know it, a whole new world is created, to express an idea, a concept, an experience... that all started in your head, and yet now it can be shared with everyone. says Fay. Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and educated in the sciences, practicing veterinary medicine and raising three children, professional singing was put on the ‘backburner‘ outside of offering her gift to her church which kept her muse happy! Shifting her career focus after a series of injuries Rändi now had the opportunity to sing with many fine ensembles in northeastern Wisconsin, which included the Dudley Birder Chorale, the Symphony Chorale/Green Bay Choral Artists, Regency Singers, Steppin’ Out, Broadway Mania and Project Pink. In addition to composing, producing and live performances on behalf of her company Emerald Heart Productions, she performs with the acclaimed Daddy D Productions as featured vocalist for the Big Band Reunion and the Allouez Village Band. In 2010, Rändi began her solo career with pianist John Contratto in the jazz duo Rhapsody. In 2011, she established her jazz/blues ensemble Limited Edition for larger performing opportunities, drawing from many of Wisconsin's finest jazz musicians blending jazz, blues, latin and swing, developing the genre Rändi refers to as lyrical jazz.. Rändi's recording experience includes co-producing three CD's with multi-instrumentalist Hans Christian, “Close to My Heart; Love Songs and Lullabies” released November 2010, and Noël in October 2011. These two projects are the result of rich collaborations with musicians Hans, George Sawyn and Woody Mankowski on both, and Tom Smith and John Contratto on the first. In June, 2012, she released her third CD: That Old Black Magic. This project features Chris Salerno, John Gibson and Danny Lueck, along with Hans and Woody, playing fresh jazz arrangements of beloved standards. Summer 2013 brought the latest development in her career, writing and performing original music. Solo and collaborative compositions with bassist Mick Maloney, guitarist Bob Balsley and keyboardist and composer Greg Pagel. “Rändi has a style all her own, spearheading a unique blend of genres by way of adding the melodies and lyrics that come to her musical heart with originality and poise.” says Jaijai Jackson of The Jazz Network Worldwide. Rändi looks forward to continuing to share her gifts, seeking opportunities to perform on music festivals across the U.S. as well as specialty performances that encourage and inspire the audience to embrace the new blend of musical artistry that she so clearly calls her own “lyrical jazz”.
