[Goanet] Why India's response to Pathankot attack was 'a debacle' - BBC

2016-01-06 Thread Roland
A sorry tale of incompetence and failure at the Indian Command Authority level.
Forget about Doval, Foval and the tier two crew. The buck stops at the Defence
Minister. Note, Mr. Sandeep Heble.

Since India is not very good at learning lessons from previous attacks, then
there is no alternative to taking the battle to Pakistani territory.

You can't live forever in fear of Pakistan's nuclear armoury. He is as scared
of you as you are of him. If anything, his fear should be greater than yours
but he is not showing it, you are.

[Goanet] A friend remembers an old war.

2016-01-06 Thread eric pinto

All this talk about Indian participation in the World Wars jolted my memory
about an old gent from Goa, Basil Irmao( Irmao means brother in Konkani). We
kids knew him as  Uncle Basil and he was our next door neighbor in Mainnavaddo,
Aldona. I was all of eleven or twelve ,then and we used to go to the manos ,by
the river to swim with my Dad and the boys of the village. One day, on about
our 11 zillionth trip to the swimming hole ,walking along with my Dad, brothers
and cousin,Uncle Basil started talking. We paid him half a mind ,because he
often rambled on,but for some reason , my Dad stopped dead in his tracks to
listen to him. We did too. He said that the dusty fields reminded him of
Mesopotamia and the dryness of the desert. Thank God there was no wind in Goa
like there was in WW1 in the Western Desert. He said that he was the batman to
the English officer who commanded the Indian Troops that fought beside the
Australians against 'Johnny Turk'.There  was a terrible battle ,he said, with
horrific casualties. The only reason that he was not a casualty was because
,according to him, the English commanded from the rear. He, being the Officer's
batman (valet), had to stick with the officer. My Dad ,just stood there and
gaped at Basil Irmao. You mean ,you were at Gallipoli ? he asked. Yes ,he said
and to the day I die I will always remember the young Australians who were
slaughtered by the Turks and more than a few Indians too for that matter! He
was then overcome with emotion and turned and continued walking. This was in
1958 when I heard this story. Basil Irmao has long passed, but when I walk by
those fields ,like I did , this time last year in Goa,all this happened
yesterday !
Dennis.

[Goanet] Just not cricket…

2016-01-06 Thread Sandeep Heble
Just not cricket…

Okay. So a 15 year old Mumbai lad scores a mammoth unbeaten 1009 runs in
323 balls and Tendulkar, Harbhajan, Rahane, Dhoni and everyone else is
super excited about it. There are screaming newspaper headlines. A 116 year
old record is broken and a new one is created. But is this cricket?
Whatever happened to grace in this sport which is supposed to be a
gentleman’s game? When an opposing team gets bundled out for a paltry 31,
you don’t go on and on and on. The game has to be played in the proper
spirit and at some point of time, the declaration should have come in. At
least after surpassing Arthur Collins' score of 628 not out, which too did
not happen. His team, KC Gandhi High School, declared their innings at 1465
for 6, a staggering lead of 1434 runs against an opposing team comprising
of boys a few years younger.

Pranav Dhanawade must have got super excited with his effort and one can’t
blame the batsman for his marathon knock which must have been full of
concentration. But the team captain or coach could surely have done better.
Sports is not just about winning and creating individual records but also
showing the proper kind of respect and grace to the opposition. Today, the
World respects Sachin Tendulkar because he showed that kind of grace on the
field throughout his career. When Germany were 5-0 up against Brazil at
half time in the FIFA Football World Cup semis, they pledged to go easier
to show some respect to the host team. That was grace. Adam Gilchrist was
loved for his fairness. He walked after nicking the ball in the World cup
finals. That was grace.

What happened in the Under-16 inter-school tournament match was something
else. It was a "no mercy" kind of approach which could set a bad trend to
the game. No doubt an Indian lad will now have his name in the record books
which may take many many more years to surpass. But what happened was not
grace. It just wasn’t cricket!

Best,

Sandeep Heble

Re: [Goanet] Secrets of Sugar - Part 1

2016-01-06 Thread Santosh Helekar
It is best not to trust public health and science-related information
circulated by the general public in internet forums. In matters of personal and
public health, in particular, one should only seek advice from a qualified
physician or a public health professional. Information on health issues
obtained from the internet by people who do not have a background in medical
sciences or public health can often be misleading and potentially harmful.

Cheers,

Santosh

Operation Pathanblot
- The Telegraph reproduces the accounts by the Union government on the
Pathankot air station attack over the past two days and holds them up against
information gleaned from the ground and from conversations with defence sources
SUJAN DUTTA IN NEW DELHI AND IMRAN AHMED SIDDIQUI IN PATHANKOT

Manohar Parrikar, defence minister: I can see some gaps but I do not think
there is any compromise on security. Everything will be clear after
investigation.

On the ground: Never before has a military installation had a full day's
advance notice and failed to prevent attackers from entering the facility.

The infiltration of Air Force Station Pathankot- with or without the alert - is
probably the most glaring of the "gaps" in the security grid that Parrikar
referred to this afternoon at the base.

The defence minister said in the same breath: "But I do not think there is any
compromise on security."

Civilians and the uninitiated will wonder what to call six armed intruders - at
the last count - entering an airbase near the border other than "compromise on
security".

The minister himself said the attackers were armed with "AK-47s, under-barrel
grenade launchers (modified to fire mortars), knives and at least 40kg to 50kg
of bullets and three to four dozens of magazines".

Try walking into Fort William in Calcutta uninvited on any given day. You don't
need to lug AK-47s and the rest of the aforesaid baggage to feel unwelcome in
the largely peaceful eastern base.

Parrikar: The technical area - housing aircraft, helicopters and possibly
unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) - is safe.

Arun Jaitley, information and broadcasting and finance minister: The
intelligence inputs helped, that is why the attack was contained and the
terrorists were contained far from the assets.

On the ground: By all accounts so far, the attackers could not reach the
technical area and seemed to have brushed past it.

But the terrorists did enter the base. Air Force Station Pathankot is a
frontline airbase, co-located with army infantry, armoured, artillery and
special forces units. The wall around it is 10 feet high, with two feet of
concertina coil at the top.

The airbase is one of the largest anywhere in the country and one of the most
strategically located. Pathankot was among the first targets of the Pakistani
air force in the last full-fledged war in 1971 and was targeted even before
that.

Yet, six terrorists managed to enter the base and keep the forces engaged for
days. The government is yet to answer how it arrived at the smug initial
assessment that security had not been compromised.

Parrikar: The army cannot perform civil duty to set up check posts on the
passages (asked how the terrorists entered the base despite advance
information).

On the ground: A forward base like Pathankot should be prepared round the clock
against infiltration, irrespective of whether there is an alert.

The air force station is roughly shaped like a teardrop. The National Highway
1A to Jammu and Kashmir passes by it. At one end, the Barphani Nullah - a canal
really - cuts an arc outside the perimeter wall before entering the compound
and then flowing out in another smaller arc. It flows below the wall through
iron grilles.

The militants - or at least one team of them - are suspected to have cut
through the grille. Another team is suspected to have cut through barbed wire
fencing on a short stretch of the wall that was partly damaged in floods last
year.

The militants were heavily armed. Six healthy men can easily share a load of
50kg-plus between them and not raise an eyebrow in many places. But when that
load turns out to be rifles with under-barrel grenade launchers, especially in
the sensitive Pathankot area, they should normally have been spotted easily.

Not that airbases have not been attacked before - all the more reason why they
should be on their toes. In October 2001 - about two months before Parliament
was attacked on December 13 - militants had
