[Goanet] SENIOR GOVT OFFICER ISSUED SHOW CAUSE FOR PARTICIPATING IN BJP CAMPAIGN

2017-01-30 Thread Aires Rodrigues
A senior Goa Government officer Balkrishna S. Borkar has been issued a show
cause notice for openly campaigning for the BJP. Balkrishna Borkar is the
Managing Director of Goa Electronics Ltd which is a subsidiary of Economic
Development Corporation (EDC). He is also the Deputy General Manager at EDC.

In a complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer yesterday, photographic
evidence was submitted that Balkrishna Borkar on Friday 27th January was
seen next to Panaji candidate Sidharth Kuncalienkar at the BJP campaign at
Miramar Beach which was held from 6.45 am to 7.30 am where free breakfast
was served.

It is a matter of great concern that government employees including some
senior officers are in blatant violation of law participating in the
election campaigning for the 4th February Goa Assembly elections. Immediate
action has been sought that Balkrishna Borkar be forthwith suspended so
that it acts as a deterrent to other officers venturing in violating the
Model code of Conduct.

[Goanet] VOTE FOR DEMOCRACY

2017-01-30 Thread Aires Rodrigues
This is a wake-up call to all voters in the forthcoming Goa Assembly
elections. A vote for the BJP will only strengthen the already despotic
dictator Narendra Modi and further weaken our democracy, leading this
country to further chaos and destruction.

The scams under the BJP continue galore but besides this Narendra Modi is a
danger for our very constitutional democracy as we are moving towards
dictatorship. Our freedom is being taken away slowly while we are being
taken for granted.

In 2014 Narendra Modi had promised the moon but all those promises have
been proved to be fake. Today he is even controlling and manipulating the
Reserve Bank of India, CBI and other autonomous bodies and even trying to
infringe on the Independence of the Judiciary. So do not further weaken our
democracy by voting for the BJP.

evening of Irish music and song with Irish food, tap dancers from the school in
Youngstown and bag pipe players.
Thanks for sending me Dr. Proctor's email address.  I will drop him an e-line.
The dance place Ohio that we attend on Friday is Avon Oaks and it is located on
Rt 422 in Girard, Ohio.Even if one is not a ballroom dancer, it is a great way
to spend an evening and see some good dancing with professional and competitive
dancers.  At this place the audience gets a first row seats to enjoy the
various dance moves.  For five bucks its great four hours of stylish
entertainment.
In two weeks, Utica will have its own version o f "Dancing with the Stars".

[Goanet] Subject: THE SOTREO ZATRA

2017-01-30 Thread MD
THE SOTREO ZATRA

The zatra, which takes place around December/January every year, is also
known as sotreo after the brightly-coloured, heavily bedecked umbrellas
which are carried in a procession. The procession winds through at least
six kilometers of impossibly narrow village lanes and thorny forest bushes,
making stops at different houses, even some belonging to Catholics. The
procession is said to be a tracing of the route by which the idol was
transported to its current site centuries ago. The palanquin of the deity
is taken to the original site of the temple demolished by the Portuguese
during the Cuncolim Revolt. The procession led by 12 umbrella carrying men
representing the 12 communities of Cuncolim, whose ancestors had moved the
idol to Fatorpa. Then, it's taken back to the present-day temple complex.
(Link:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/The-goddess-of-dreams/articleshow/41813057.cms
)

Sources claim the Zatra procession with drum sounds/shields stopped for
rest at Velliapura Royal residence at Kadamba King Jayakeshi I Royal
compound at Velim, before they proceeded to Assolna, the end point, via a
place now known as 'bostoli suvaat.' Oral tradition has it that some
Portuguese priests or St. Francis Xavier himself lived in an outhouse room
in 1530s and because of this the procession route was diverted to another
way and the room was called 'bostoli suvaat' and nobody used that
room/place at the outer boundary of the village until villagers agreed to
build a church there. When time came to name the church the Carambolim
settlers in Velim wanted to name the church after St. John Baptist but
Velim villagers objected and named the church as St. Francis Xavier.

Any feedback on this will be appreciated.

[Goanet] Mining truck owners urge companies to hire vehicles again

2017-01-30 Thread samir umarye

BICHOLIM: At least 130 truck owners from Pali mines have urged the companies
and the government to hire their trucks once again, which were thrown out by
calling them as ‘ outsiders’. Speaking at a press conference truck owners of
two mining company from Pali stated that the company has asked them to stop
work by calling them outsiders. The truck owners who are asked to stop work are
from Surla, Tivim, Ponda, Bicholim and other areas.

A truck owner Vishwanath Mandrekar stated that their trucks are with the
company since more than 20 years and it is surprising that the company has now
given such as excuse to stop their trucks.

“ Most of the truck owners are with the company since last more than 20 years.

The company should have at least allowed one truck of the owner so that their
families would not be facing financial problems,” Mandrekar said.

Vishnu Kambli, another truck owner, stated that after the resumption of mining
they were hoping that they would get some work but even that hope has been
dashed because of the order of the company.

“ We demand with the company that they should reinstate our trucks before the
elections,” Kambli said.

Raghunath Parab, Vishram Naik, Mandar Samant and others were present for the
press conference.

[Goanet] MURDERING THE MAHATMA TODAY! by Fr Cedric Prakash sj(30January2017)

2017-01-30 Thread Robin Viegas
From: b sabha

From: Fr. Cedric Prakash sj
>

MURDERING THE MAHATMA TODAY!

- Fr Cedric Prakash sj*

January 30th 1948 will remain etched forever in the conscience of the nation.
On that fateful day at evening prayer, Mahatma Gandhi fell to the bullets of
his assassin Nathuram Godse, in Delhi. Godse represented the fascist, fanatic,
fundamentalist and ‘feku’ forces, which abhorred the values for which Gandhi,
espoused all his life and particularly the idea of an inclusive, pluralistic
and secular India. These forces unfortunately are still very alive in India and
in several parts of the world today!

There are certainly those who disagreed with Gandhi during his lifetime and
there are many who disagree with his philosophy and his methodology even today.
Nevertheless, few will be able to contest the fact that Gandhi was a man of
principles who lived and died for a cause. His life was frugal and exemplary
and unlike several politicians today, he did not care leave alone crave, for
the privileges and the trappings of power.

In his lifetime, he internalized and propagated two cherished values TRUTH
(Satyagraha) and NONVIOLENCE (Ahimsa). This twin doctrine is today more than
ever needed, as sizeable sections of India and other parts of the world fall
easy prey to falsehood and hate; to divisiveness and violence. Gandhi believed
in the spirituality of inclusiveness. For him, the Hindu Scriptures ‘the
Bhagvad Gita’ and Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount”(particularly the section on the
‘Beatitudes’)had to be read and meditated upon simultaneously since he was
convinced that they resonated with one another. He refers to this in his
autobiography ‘My Experiment with Truth’

There was plenty of violence and bloodshed in the run –up to India’s
independence. Gandhi truly desired an undivided India, in which Hindus and
Muslims would live in peace and harmony. In October 1946, he spent weeks in
Naokhali (today in Bangla Desh) literally bringing to a halt, in a non-violent
way, massacres and mayhem between the two communities. On August 15 1947, as
India celebrated her independence, there were no celebrations for Gandhi; he
was back in Calcutta with his protégé Abdul Ghaffar Khan. He encouraged people
to be non-violent and peaceful; he himself prayed, fasted and spun yarn. Those
actions of his had a profound impact on the people- peace was restored. When C
Rajagopalachari, the first Governor- General of Independent India, visited and
congratulated Gandhi for restoring peace in the city, Gandhi said he would not
be satisfied "until Hindus and Muslims felt safe in one another's company and
returned to their own homes to life as before." He sincerely cared for those
who were forcibly displaced.
On the day Gandhi was assassinated Pandit Nehru, India’s Prime Minister in an
emotional address to the nation said, “the light has gone out of our lives and
there is darkness everywhere! “He was just stating a fact. Darkness continues
to envelop a good part of the world today; the very forces that murdered Gandhi
continue to murder all that he epitomized. True there are some hypocritical
gestures like usurping the place of Gandhi at the spinning wheel, for a picture
on an official calendar. Gandhi never subscribed to showmanship nor was he
arrogant. He fought against sectarianism and racism and would have left no
stone unturned today to take sides with the refugees and other forcibly
displaced people of the world.
Indian Catholics will observe a “Day of Peace” on January 30th. Significantly,
in a message for the Fiftieth World Day of Peace (celebrated officially on
January 1st 2017) entitled ‘Nonviolence: A Style of Politics for Peace’, Pope
Francis emphatically states that, “violence is not the cure for our broken
world.” He calls for a new style of politics built on peace and nonviolence,
and at the same time for disarmament and the eradication of nuclear weapons.
Both Mahatma Gandhi and Abdul Ghaffar Khan are referred to in this message as
icons of nonviolence and peace. We certainly have much to learn from them.
The world today is in a turmoil as never before. In ways both subtle and
direct; through discriminatory policies and executive orders; through
manipulations and coercions, we witness the gradual break-up of our world, even
as hasty and unwanted walls are built to keep people out. We need to do all we
can to prevent the triumph of these forces who are inimical to the cherished
ideals and values of Gandhi, the Apostle of Nonviolence. We must cry halt to
their murderous march now!

[Goanet] Pawar asks people to send home BJP, Cong for closing mining

2017-01-30 Thread samir umarye
BICHOLIM: The NCP President Sharad Pawar has urged the people to send home both
the BJP and the Congress, the former for stopping mining and the latter for
supporting it.

Addressing a public meeting in Sanquelim on Sunday, Pawar said, “ Today in
Sanquelim there is mining problem and former chief minister Manohar Parrikar is
responsible for the same. As mining was stopped abruptly, the same way
demonetisation was done. About 11 crore people stood in queue for getting their
own money. Everywhere in the world we were made a laughing stock.” “ Even
though Goa is small, it is famous all over the world. It is because of the Goan
culture, secularism and all these aspects have been preserved in the State.
There is need to preserve it,” Pawar said.

Sanquelim NCP candidate Pratap Gawas came down on Parrikar heavily saying that
he “ is not concerned with the defence of the country.” Party General Secretary
Praful Patel said, “ Congress has always tried to avoid people. In Goa, there
are several problems including mining, regional plan and other issues which are
kept hanging since last several years. BJP did not implement RP as they wanted
to make money.” He informed that he had given sanction for Mopa airport, when
he was the minister for civil aviation in the UPA government led by then prime
minister Manmohan Singh.

Maharastra Mahila President Chitra Wagh said that BJP failed to fulfil even a
single promise at the State and national level.

Meanwhile, addressing an election rally in Vasco, Pawar accused Prime Minister
Narendra Modi of missing important issues in his speech at Goa.

2017-01-30 Thread Roland Francis
Quebec City the capital of Quebec province, is a beautiful place, which
includes old Quebec, a heritage city fortified with a wall, steeped in European
charm with magnificent structures on cobblestoned streets.

It is not a sacred city like Rome's Vatican or anything, but it's hard to
imagine an alien resident presence here except for visitors and tourists.

Therefore the indiscriminate shooting of Muslims praying at an Islamic Cultural
Centre aka Mosque, resulting in 6 deaths and many injured, is a shock to all
Canadians. Thanks to free flowing Saudi money and Wahhabi zeal, such religious
places have popped up all over the developed world. Part of their stated
doctrine of converting the world to Islam.

I digress.

The shooters are now identified as Alexandre Bisonnette and Mohamed Khadir. No
motive has yet been ascribed or speculated to the killings, but the thought
that occurs to me is that the name Khadir is Shia and a train of thought that
follow from that. As to Bisonnette, there is no shortage of crazies all over.

[Goanet] A pungent political pickle

2017-01-30 Thread Eugene Correia
My column In today's OHeraldo

A pungent politcal pickle

Eugene Correoa

With just a few days left before D-Day, the voter has some time to wade
through the political minefield. It’s mind-boggling that there are more
than 200 candidates for the 40 seats. For the uncommitted voter, the task
isn’t going to be easy in choosing his or her candidate. Pity the
independent voter. Obviously, he or she will have to shift the chaff from
the wheat. Many project themselves as squeaky-clean but once elected they
show their true colours.

The voter may face a Hobson’s choice, but the voter must choose. NOTA is
one of the choice, but technically it’s an invalid vote. Voting NOTA means
the voter isn’t prudent enough.. Instead, the voter is a shame to
democracy. Goans cannot be said to be politically naïve, and, therefore,
they should be able to see through the maze and vote for the right
candidate.

The election scenario can be said to be a pungent political pickle or
sorpotel, that favourite Christian Goans’ dish, which could be termed as
witches’ cauldron, depending on one’s political view. Besides the BJP and
the Congress, there are many other newcomers into this unholy mix. The
entry of AAP has raised eyebrows, and perhaps hopes. Will Goa be another
Delhi?

During the campaign, Goans may have found the floor-crossing or
party-hopping either amusing or nauseating. We can call it, “Ailo Pedru,
Ghelo Pedru” to give it Konkani equivalent of “Aya Ram, Gaya Ram.” The
major split in alliance between BJP and MGP is something out of the blue.
The parties were comfy twins. It seems like MGP didn’t want to play second
fiddle to BJP anymore. Worse was the nagging fight between the BJP and the
RSS, with the latter’s chief Subhas Velingkar having retaliated by driving
a deep wedge into the Sangh Parivar family after he was shown the door.

Why is the RSS gung-ho on the Medium of Instruction (MoI), when Marathi and
Konkani have been kept alive by those who have been using the languages
widely in their daily lives? Since this issue gave birth to the Goa
Suraksha Manch (GSM), a political outfit of Velingkar’s Bharatiya Bhasha
Suraksha Manch (BBSM), it seems inevitable that the MGP joined hands with
the GSM, as both have common agenda. There was no point for Shiv Sena to
stray into the language politics and give the issue a trident (say,
Trishul) dimension. Aren’t Goans wary of this ‘language politics”?

Notwithstanding the “fringe” parties, the addition of parties led by MLAs,
such as Goa Forward by Vijay Sardesai, the United Goans Party by Atanasio
Monserrate, and the Goa Su-Raj Party (GRSP) by Francisco Xavier Pacheco
have created a unpalatable unpalatable soup. Does Pacheco’s deserting Goa
Vikas Party mean that he didn’t want the party to be a silent supporter of
BJP? Will Nuvem give Pacheco a last chance that he begged for and help GSRP
make maiden entry into the hallowed hall of the assembly?

The eclipse of United Goans Democratic Party (UDGP) from the electoral map
is unbelievable. A party that hoped to replicate the United Goans Party, is
badly wounded. By spurning both Pacheco and Monserrate’s return to the
fold, a rift between the two brothers-in-law, Anacleto Viegas and Radharao
Gracias, doesn’t bode well for the party.

Deeply wounded too but carrying on gamely is Churchill Alemao, founder of
UGDP. A never-say-die politician, Churchill has seen the best and the worst
of days. To have risen to be the CM, however short, he remains an enigma in
Goan politics. As we see the trend of changing political parties at the
drop of a hat, none can beat Churchill. Churchill’s quest for power seems
unquenchable. Driven helter-skelter in the political winds as they were
unleashed during the campaigns, Churchill had to settle into the safe haven
of NCP.

Shattered in the last elections, the Alemao family isn’t used to living in
political wilderness. If Benaulim, where his daughter, Valanka, came a
cropper in 2012, Churchill hopes to teach his friends-turned-rivals a
lesson as well avenge his daughter’s defeat at the hands of Cajetan (Caitu)
D’Silva, and Joaquim wins, the family score against Congress would be
settled.

The widespread problems that resulted from the internal warfare in both the
Congress and BJP should affect both parties at the hustings. That the
anti-BJP parties failed to weave an alliance seems a mammoth failure,
particularly since Congress wants to wrest power back from the BJP. It is
obvious that there is “leadership deficit” in both parties, more so in the
BJP with a vague message from Amit shah that Parrikar would be in charge of
the BJP if the party wins. It’s an indictment of Laxmikant Parsekar.

Some of the candidates from the national parties who held power in past
times do not inspire confidence. To counter the charge that the Congress is
a party of grand-parents, Luizinho Faleiro wanted a crop of fresh faces.
It’s not new wine in old bottles, but old wine in old bottlesIt’s

I often wonder if it is NOT all a Ponzi scheme ie getting new and young
Immigrant folks to Work and Pay High Taxes to subsidise the cost (esp) of
health care (and other expenses ) for the ageing Canadians.

So, I cannot envision Canada taking in the poor Indians.

I wonder, however, what effect the Moroccan ( if true) story will affect the
young PM.

Re: [Goanet] As Donald Trump denies climate change...these kids are dying of it.

2017-01-30 Thread Jim Fernandes

I DO NOT support Trump on every little thing he says or does. But the lefties
are hurting themselves by going after stupid arguments. What has Trump got to
do with kids dying of climate change? The man got into his seat barely a week
ago ... Any sense in this head line? I guess the jobless guys have not much to
do ...

I haven't read this article and I deliberately avoid reading similar crap.

I am all for good environment and leaving a better planet for our children. But
I'd also like to think I am a better than average debater and a better informed
world citizen. Therefore, for a change, I'd like to take the other side. If
someone wants to challenge me on this ... please go ahead ...

I say, climate change is good. It has always been that way as it helps only the
best to survive and thrive. We have studied this phenomenon in school and we
called it Natural Selection.

Without climate change, you and I would not be sitting here and having this
INTERNET exchange. Imagine, there was no asteroid slamming the Earth 65 million
years ago that wiped out the great dinosaurs and almost every other life form
with it. There would be zero chance for humans to evolve with the great
monsters ruling the planet. It's only because the dinosaurs perished with the
resulting climate change, the little mammals got a chance to thrive and allowed
us to evolve into humans.

Ha ha ha ha ...

How about the various Ice Ages in Earth's past?

There have been several ice ages that came and went - well before modern humans
ever got a chance to evolve. Our planet has been doing this naturally for
hundreds of thousands of years before humans ever had a chance to evolve.
Therefore, why suddenly shift the blame onto humans for climate change?

Did the life forms on Earth not survive, evolve and thrive for hundreds of
thousands of years before human evolution? So what's the big deal if we see a
few degree changes in Earth's atmosphere caused by humans? Even the most recent
Ice Age that ended some 10,000 years ago, had zero human hand in ending it. So
why blame humans (or Trump who has been America's president for barely a week)
for making the planet warmer?

During the most recent Ice Age, most of North America - including the land I am
sitting on (in NY) was under at least one mile thick of ice over it. How did
the ice melt?

Certainly, the few hundred thousand humans who lived on the planet did not
cause the most recent ice age to end as they did not have the technology to do
it 10,000 years ago. Back then, they could barely create fire!!!

I believe it is the tilt of the Earth as well as the wandering Earth's magnetic
poles / Earth's pole reverals are causing the periodic climatic changes which
in turn drive the pattern of periodic ice ages.
