[Goanet] PUTTING THE LAW DEPARTMENT IN ORDER

2010-07-22 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Goa Government’s decision to appoint Additional Sessions Judge Mr.
Pramod Kamat as the new Law Secretary is a step in the right direction to
clear the mess in the Law department.

The removal of High Court Public Prosecutor Mrs Winnie Coutinho was another
step in clearing the rot and muck that has been witnessed. It is very
however regretful that the Goa Government allowed Mrs. Winnie Coutinho to
continue as Public Prosecutor in the High Court for over two years after the
Goa Government itself had concluded that she was incompetent and very
corrupt.

Now there should be a concerted effort to put the Law department in good
order. To achieve this, it’s crucial and imperative that Goa get’s at the
earliest possible a competent and honest Advocate General in place. What is
the Chief Minister who is also the Law Minister waiting for?

The Goa Government has very rightly decided not to give a further extension
in service to Goa’s Law Secretary, Mr. V.P. Shetye. It is a shame that Mr.
Shetye, a former district judge was ready to bow and bend to the whims and
fancies of our lawless politicians in order to hold on to his chair which he
so astutely managed to cling to till the ripe age of 70.

With Mr. Shetye gone there should be a concerted effort to put the Law
department in good order. To achieve this, Goa would need a competent and
honest Advocate General in place.

Even a tanker of detergent will not be enough to clean up the rot, muck and
disgrace the incumbent Mr. Subodh Kantak has brought to this high
Constitutional post. The legacy he would leave behind when he quits or is
booted out will be a harrowing task for the person who steps into his
shoes.
