I canot say that I am happy about that. The publication has seen better days and this is a sorry pass, after the silver jubilee and a greater interest in Romi literature. Did someone shoot himself in his Achilles heel with a Devanagri bullet? And In the meanwhile, others are finding that shedding crocodile tears for Konkani is not enough to keep the rose plant alive in the GULAB archipelago. on 6 Dec, jc wrote: I thought that I ask you about GULAB. A few years ago, I organised to have some issues air-mailed to me. My reaction after reading one issue: Do these jokers really expect people to spend money to buy this junk? As usual, when cornered, you have opened a new door. The topic was whether the late Fr. Antonio Pereira sj had really changed his mind as regards the script for Official Language Konkani and, if so, the proof in that regard. Having failed miserably to provide the proof for your assertion, you are now trying to divert the attention of Goanetters towards the topic of GULAB, the Konkani monthly magazine. Let us see how well you fare here. When the late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa started this first Konkani magazine in colour, he explained this as an admittedly foolish enterprise in his very first editorial. It would be foolish because (1) no such daring attempt had been made by anyone earlier in Konkani and (2) the mortality of Konkani periodicals was very high. But his perseverance and hard work bore fruit. Not only did the magazine survive without missing a single issue but it also went from strength to strength; in spite of several bouts of severe illness that Fr. Freddy suffered, not even once did the magazine fail to hit the news-stands on the first of the month. Thus he came to entertain the dream that he would be able to complete the silver jubilee of its uninterrupted publication; and he said so. As a realist, he could not aim much higher because of his indifferent health and the fact that he did not have any progeny to whom he could pass on the baton. But in May 2004, Fr. Freddy died in an accident, at the age of 50. To add to this, his comrade in arms, the experienced and pioneering journalist Felicio Cardoso also perished in the same mishap. Though a septuagenarian, the latter could have been expected to shoulder the onerous task of continuing with the publication. Thus almost everyone, including well-wishers, felt that the tragic accident had tolled the death-knell of GULAB. At that stage Fr. Freddy's Mumbai-based brother Fausto, an experienced editor himself, stepped in to help realize his revered brother's dream. For the last three years and a half he has been shuttling between Mumbai and Goa every month. He has succeeded in maintaining the standard as well as the punctuality of the magazine. He had also been publishing his own bimonthly The Goan Review which, too, he has maintained uninterrupted. I need not stress on the undeniable fact that one cannot live on publishing Konkani magazines; an avocation is essential to earn one's bread. Fausto too has his business. But the constant physical and mental strain has taken a toll of his health. Therefore, having helped realize his brother's dream, he has decided to rest on his oars the periodicity of GULAB is being reduced from MONTHLY to QUARTERLY. And he has given the readers sufficient advance notice of the things to come. Therefore, where is the basis for your stating that they are losing their voice? Now, let me see you exercise your grey cells. Exactly two years ago, GOENCHO ULO was published as a fortnightly. The avowed bases for the publication were: (1) There is a huge readership (over 50,000) hungrily awaiting a daily in Konkani in the Roman Script (KRS). Thus a print order of 10,000 would be just modest. (2) Only the first three issues would need capital funding; after that the advertisement revenues would not only pay for its upkeep but also generate sufficient funds to eventually convert it into a daily. Believing in these tall claims, many Non Resident Goans (NRG) came forward with bountiful contributions. But the periodical maintained its fortnightly periodicity just for three issues and did not survive for a total of six months. A CALL which was expected to be strident, got snuffed out without a whimper! It disappeared without notice, without taking leave of its readers! Let us not forget the following facts: (1) a coloured monthly magazine in KRS like GULAB survives for 25 years, (2) a weekly in KRS like V. IXTT carries on for 75 years, (3) a monthly in KRS like DOR MHOINEACHI ROTTI survives uninterruptedly for over 40 years (and, with a gap of just a few years, for over 80 years), (4) tabloid dailies in KRS like SOT, DIVTTI, NOVEM GOEM each

Curtorim Citizens against Sonsodo Garbage I have many a times written on this topic. being closely associated with Curtorim constituency and knowing the hardships of the people out there i feel it is only time these people come out against the hardships that are caused to them by the sonsodo garbage dump. in his entire tenure as representative of curtorim Sardinha's nose could never smell the stench as his montri-car fitted with the red light was air-conditioned all the time. sardinha also never wanted to antagonise the margao mla as it was partialy the fault of the margao legislator for taking measures to clean up the dump. now alexio lourenco has issued an ultamitum to the government to clean up its act on sonsodo..well done alexio...thats the way to go... The citizens of curtorim should agitate outside the Margo municipal council and also hold Sardinha responsible for not doing anything on the ill effects of the sonsodo dump. i can imagine babush leading an agitation from taleigao, alexio lourenco leading an agitation from curtorim, plus the dozen of other anti-sez agitations and other issues plaguing the state, its time defacting angel digamber kamat goes back to the BJP...if they ever want him back... the hole ridden, rat infested ship of digamber kamat is sinking...and i hear he is in gujarat campaigning for the Congress... [Goanet] Gabe's expressed views on a) caste in London, b) why fix it if it ain't broke?
* * * 2007 ANNUAL GOANETTERS MEET - GOA * * * WHERE: Foodland Cafe - Miramar Residency - Miramar, Goa WHEN: December 27, 2006 @ 4:30pm More info: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-December/066098.html Hi Gabe You have sent mixed signals on the first issue 1) caste in London. At times you have said it barely exists and at other times that it does. I will address this issue now. a)The prevalence or not of caste among 'Catholic ' Goans in London is symptomatic of the wider issues around how the feminine world, more so than the male, constructs reality around itself. Let us take London as illustrative of the UK generally. As young women are statistically better qualified and educated than males currently, they have good jobs with high spending power. Goan women are definitely part of this scenario. Such young women would rather be single than have to 'carry' a less well educated and lower earning partner than themselves. Indeed, the rate of singledom is remarkably high for this among many other reasons. Likewise, marriageable males (and females) are increasingly wary about the prospects of divorce and potential loss of 50% of their estate and thus also fearful of marriage and partnerships. In such a scenario, females especially look for the best catch possible in terms of meeting their emotional and economic needs. This they now readily find from an incredible choice of persons from all over the world. If Catholicism is a consideration, there are millions of Catholics from South America, Ireland specifically, Western Europe and especially Poland today. Therefore, gone are the days when parents might have strongly influenced their offspring about marriage partners. In this context, unless a 'Catholic' Goan caste carrying person has a very good education, good financial prospects etc and no parents to worry about in some kind of extended family abode, he becomes virtually a non runner in the partnership race. Caste in such circumstances is a nonsense when marriage away from Goans is an exciting prospect. Indeed, some 25% of Indians (both for male and female) are married or partnered to other groups outside their ethnic groups. However, my reckoning is that, because of the wide availability of Catholics for marriage/partnership, the figure for the Goans marrying 'outside' should be much higher than 25%. My estimate is that it is more like 30% and rising fast. Many parents will tell you quite proudly that their daughters and sons in laws are from every corner of the world but there is no Goan in sight! Indeed, Gabe alluded to this prospect in the case of his own sons. b) There were thriving Goan village associations formed largely when the parents joined their working children in London and for a while some such associations were definitely geared towards the objective of endogamy (marrying within). Such caste geared village associations are now virtually falling apart with mainly older attendees. While it would be difficult in the past to gain entry to their annual socials, their hope now is that they may just about fill the hall and break even with the help of people with no links to the village association at all. Some small infusion of new blood via the Portuguese passport route may bolster specific village numbers but the earlier point I made about the wide social catchment area puts paid to this forlorn hope too. c) I invariably have to advise hell of a lot of young women at university who see me as a mature neutral adviser on marriage matters. The mindsets I encounter are similar for all those of Asian origin---extreme caution about those their parents want them to marry. Why on earth do you think there is forced marriage and abduction to Pakistan (and presumably India too) for girls of marriageable age. It is precisely for the reasons I have outlined in my general scenario above. Young people and especially women want to manifest their freedom to marry a person of their choice and not one of their parent's choice. And I say good for them. It is time that male unwarranted hegemony on this highly personal issue came to a rapid end. As in the long article supplied to Goanet by Mervyn Lobo in Toronto, young Asians/Goans have minds of their own and caste has virtually no bearing on their calculations/judgements made particularly by young marriageable women. The old 'Catholic' notion of caste pedigree falls at the first hurdle unless there is commensurate reciprocity in terms of higher education, professionalism and career progression. This is why I believe that anyone who says that 'Catholic' caste is rife in London is entirely wrong, and sadly, much to the dismay of

* * * 2007 ANNUAL GOANETTERS MEET - GOA * * * WHERE: Foodland Cafe - Miramar Residency - Miramar, Goa WHEN: December 27, 2007 @ 4:30pm More info: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-December/066098.html Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2007 22:49:40 -0800 (PST) From: Carvalho [EMAIL PROTECTED] I decided the matter was complicated when Dr Basilio Monterio was branded a caste-apologist. He is a wonderful human being, a dear friend of mine and my family's. He is not at all an apologist for caste, his views on the subject are not born out of thin air but from years of living the system in Goa. I hope that answers your question. Mario responds: There are many wonderful human beings who make apologies for the caste system, or argue that it is not a big deal or that it is disappearing on its own, like you and Gabe and Edward and Valmiki, so being generally wonderful provides no valid clues as to where one stands on the abomination of caste. Personal and family friendships do not provide any clues either. Neither does education. Gilbert actually thinks that casteists like himself are the real victims and those actively advocating for the abolition of caste are the villains. I find it ironic that your close family friend, Father Basilio, has somehow made caste a complicated issue for you by unequivocally calling caste abhorrent to any sensible person, but has had no influence on you on his primary expertise, religion and the existence of God. Father Basilio and I are on the same page as far as caste is concerned. Where we disagree is in how to respond to it. He, being a nice and humble and cerebral padre, prefers the low-key, behind-the-scenes approach, whereas I, being a mean and never humble, visceral kind of guy, believe that we have tried that approach long enough with only partial success. My rationale is the observation that no major organized societal system of discrimination and exploitation, from British colonialism to Portuguese colonialism to apartheid to communism to despotism to civil rights for all in the US, has ever been eliminated by a low-key, behind-the-scenes, approach. Some other caste-abolitionists may have reacted to Basilio's essay that Hinduism is NOT based on caste out of frustration because he introduced comments that a) had never been alleged, and b) seemed to divert attention from the abolitionist agenda. However, nothing he has written can be classified as an apology for the caste system. My measured response to Father Basilio can be see at: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-November/065341.html I basically said that while Hinduism is not based on caste, caste is synonymous with Hinduism from where it had infiltrated Christianity among Goans. This includes those Goans whose keen insight and superior wisdom eventually led them to become agnostics or atheists:-)) --- Spread the Christmas Cheer, even when you're not here! [Goanet] Photographing... in Pondicherry
* * * 2007 ANNUAL GOANETTERS MEET - GOA * * * WHERE: Foodland Cafe - Miramar Residency - Miramar, Goa WHEN: December 27, 2007 @ 4:30pm More info: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-December/066098.html Frankly, I didn't even know why I was headed to Pondicherry. But when Gitanjali sent in an invite for an ICT-for-D event there, I just accepted. Pondicherry is the closest you could get to France in India. Part of it is a crowded, dusty small Indian city (much like any other of the few hundreds in Tamil Nadu). Given my lack of knowledge, I have to lean back on the Wikipedia. Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry is a Union Territory of India. It is a former French colony, consisting of four non-contiguous enclaves, or districts, and named for the largest, Pondicherry. In September 2006, the territory changed its official name from Pondicherry to the vernacular original, Puducherry, which means new village in the Tamil language. The territory is called Putucceri or Panṭicceri in Tamil,, or Pondichery iFrench. It is also known as The French Riviera of the East (La Cote d'Azur de l'Est). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pondicherry For a change, one needed to catch the KSRTC early Volvo out of Goa. I knew the only morning bus left Bangalore at 8.30 am. For awhile, it seemed we weren't making it. But I ran into typically South Indian politeness, when the KSRTC bus driver showed his concern in fighting traffic jams and dropping me just alongside where the next bus, another Volvo (inexpensively priced at under Rs 400 for the eight-hour day journey) was conveniently waiting. It put to rest my alternative plan of bussing it via Chennai. En route we passed Gingi fort, the tall rocks along the Tamil countryside, and the polite people and food-served-on-a-plaintain-leaf of the region. Strange, during my last visit to Pondicherry in 2001 or thereabout, I had completely missed seeing the Gingi fort, seated atop a tall hill. The text below wouldn't prepare you for the dramatic view of this photo (no photo of it either, sorry!): Gingee Fort counts amongst the few forts that are still in existence in Tamil Nadu. It is situated in the Villupuram district, which is situated at a distance of approximately 160 km from the Chennai city of India. The district also lies close to the union territory of Pondicherry. One of the most unassailable citadels of India, the fort was given the name of 'Troy of the East' by the British. The place where the Gingi fort today stands, was once the site of a small fort built by the Chola dynasty in 9th century. http://www.iloveindia.com/indian-monuments/gingee-fort.html But then I'm not the best, or most enthusiastic, of travellers. Photographs are something else. It's just my way of relaxing, and justifying my travels (and adding to my carbon-footprint on the planet, in these 'global warming' days). So take a look at what my trigger-happy finger shot (on 10-megapixels now, Olympus thanks!) here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/sets/72157603408860652/ I like Auroville, and still await going through P Raja and Rita Nath Keshari's neat book 'Glimpses of Pondicherry'. (Quote: After all is said and done, is Pondicherry nothing more than this sea-facing town? The French focussed more on embellishing the eastern part of the town than on any other in the entire territory. What about the hinterland? Do tourist brochures that give the land area and maps also reveal the priceless heritage of Pondicherry?) En route, I shot some photos at Bangalore (the Indian Social Institute, run by the Jesuits; Lal Baug). So take a look, and feel free to copy for any non-commercial purposes. But, are you sure of the reasons -- hard work would surely be among them -- that led to its success esp. in the early stages, when 'interruptus' is the watchword for many publications that get coitus at this stage? A man working in Dubai had issued an anguished appeal to then Archbishop Gonsalves, some X'mas or Easter day, by way of newspaper advertisements. It seems his local bank balance had got substantially depleted, he won a divorce, but his appeal before the High Court to subject a certain man unrelated to the lawsuit, which was between him and his wife's proven infidelity, to a paternity test was rejected -- imho, rightly. I gather from what you say (please enlighten me if I'm wrong) that publications in Romi Konknni did well when edited/published/supported by the church or its organs? As human being, I had good regard for the late Fr. Freddy. When I sought the Jesuit, Fr. Antonio Pereira's permission to digitize his own book on Konknni proverbs, he told me his son, Fr. Freddy, was promising to come up with a revised version and that he, Fr. Pereira, had asked the son, Fr. Freddy, whether the latter planned to publish the revised version after he (Fr. Pereira) died. When I met Fr. Freddy at Verna with a written request for digitizing the book a few days later, he told me that he and Felicio Cardoso were working on its revised version and once it was done, he would provide me the entire book in digital format, which could then more easily be uploaded in the public domain. I was saddened when all three eventually passed away. My physical copy of the book, substantial work on whose digitizing had been completed, will shortly be brought back by a friend from Canada. Some Goan priests indeed were 'daring' and a few, so very unfortunately, had to pay with their lives. Heaven, which they served so assiduously when here, will surely bless them. [Goanet] Borges and the pirate priest.
* * * 2007 ANNUAL GOANETTERS MEET - GOA * * * WHERE: Foodland Cafe - Miramar Residency - Miramar, Goa WHEN: December 27, 2007 @ 4:30pm More info: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-December/066098.html Dear friends, On Wed, 5 Dec 2007, jc wrote: Does Sebastian (of the Dhu, Mai ki Sasumai fame) know for sure that there is a priest (known to Miguel) who is definitely a pirate? BTW: Please include (in the charge) what the priest pirated from whom. IF so, will Sebastian ... make a direct accusation on GoaNet thus giving the 'priest' an opportunity to counter the allegation... On 4 Dec 2007, Miguel Braganza wrote: To his eternal regret, the junior of Fr. Antonio Pereira sj did not take his words in writing. And on 5 Dec 2007 Miguel wrote: If Sebastiao-bab names the priest whom he accuses of piracy, I bet he will even surprise himself. To stop further allegations ...arrest the alligator! Sebastian Borges replies: jc (of Keri gada fame), who had received a severe banging for posting without thinking, has done it again. He is asking for information which is already available in the very thread whence he extracted his quote for this thread; the name of the priest is available in at least three posts. From two of Miguel's posts it is very clear not only that the priest is known to Miguel but also that the two are in regular contact. In a later post Miguel refers to the priest as the junior of Fr. Antonio Pereira sj. So, instead of waiting for me to remember the priest's name, jc would be well advised to consult the Goanet archives. Any astute reader would discern that the statement was a quote from the priest; but, being an expert in the art of 'suppressio veri, suggestio falsi', he couched it in such a manner that any normal reader would be bamboozled into believing that the sentence about Fr. Pereira was an authenticated fact gleaned by Miguel himself. But now, to the Junior's eternal regret, the cat is out of the bag and the rat is trying to dig a new burrow at the base of the rose plant! (more about this later.) As regards my making a direct accusation and giving the priest an opportunity to counter it, I am afraid it will not work; the priest considers it infra dig to discuss such matters on the internet. He would rather use the services of gullible proxies like Miguel. I am sure Miguel will agree with me on this. A columnist of Miguel's calibre, writing exclusively for English readership, certainly knows that one does not take in writing the words of a prolific writer; the writer (especially one who has been a life-long educator) himself writes and publishes his say, all the more so when he changes his well-publicized view. Thus, this is an addition to the pile of prevarications from this priest. But I trust that, having learnt his lesson from this eternal regret, the junior has taken in writing Fr. Moreno's retraction, assuming there was one. Otherwise, he will have to proffer the selfsame excuse a couple of years hence. Miguel is probably suffering from (or feigning?) amnesia. This very topic had cropped up in another forum (not unrelated to GoaNet) a year or so ago and the name of the pirate as well as the booty and modus operandi was revealed there. The evidence is available in a PUBLISHED INTERVIEW with the victim. If Miguel wants the same to be revealed all over again, let him say so; else just clam shut. And on 5 Dec 2007 Miguel also wrote: To stop further allegations ...arrest the alligator! This is a fine recipe from a practitioner of suppressio veri suggestio falsi. Whoever has heard of crocodiles making allegations or being arrested? Miguelbab should know that a person who makes allegations is NOT called an ALLIGATOR. Should we expect such ignorance of English from a columnist who writes exclusively for English readership and berates a child for using atrocious English in her public speech made in front of her peers? * * * 2007 ANNUAL GOANETTERS MEET - GOA * * * WHERE: Foodland Cafe - Miramar Residency - Miramar, Goa WHEN: December 27, 2007 @ 4:30pm More info: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-December/066098.html Hi Gabe a) There is hell of a lot of literature (novels especially) that deal with this irrational phenomena or belief that some people are automatically better than they are or even born to rule. Such believers are deemed by writers to have the souls of servants---so do be aware my friend what you might wish for! The UK TV serial Upstairs, Downstairs, epitomised this phenomena rather well and the character Jackson was the classic example of one with the soul of a servant. I dread to think that this image of Jackson may transfer to you in my and other people's imagination! It would be truly sad! b) You suggest that Bamons have class (as metaphorically used). Of course I agree with you that some would but I think you are inclined to unwittingly generalise that many do and also that you would recognise a bamon if you saw one in say London. You shouldn't be taken in by looks as they can be very deceptive and many a crook has foxed people for a while by pretending to be a member of the aristocracy, that is, those not already in prison for fraud and larceny! Me thinks however that you appropriate this ephemeral thing called class rather casually. As some of our Bamons, especially in Goa haven't quite seen the light of day in terms of modern thinking are you perhaps confusing such a lot as having class rather than undiluted peasantry in their bloodstream and psyche? Just a thought from one who would reject your utterances on class and Bamons with considerable disgust. Do also remember something important. Caste carriers like the Bamons thrive on acquiescence and acknowledgement of their supposed 'superiority' from others. Take this away and they have absolutely nothing to sustain them. I suggest you use contempt when respect is not deserving and see your Bamons wilt before your very eyes! Having a sound intellect also helps as is so evident in much of this ongoing discourse on caste. Have you encountered a single robust and intelligent riposte from our supposed defenders of caste? All these defenders of caste have been reduced to unintelligible gobbledygook in what they have tried to write. Cornel . Without too much of effort and cost we can help the unfortunate in our home towns and villages IF WE CARE TO SHARE. The Christmas crib is not the only thing that we crib about. It is almost a fine art in Goa. Few people in the village of Aldona thought they would be different ...and succeeded! It is a model that can be replicated, modified and improved on in each town and village. A year ago it was a lady whose house was blown off and needed to have a roof over her head again. A few persons came together and raised the money. The Parish Priest actively supported the initiative then as he has done now. One committee of volunteers building two houses by offering what they had as their core competence. One designed the house, the other got the construction material, a third supervised, a fourth put it on the Aldona net to raise contributions, a fourth made announcement in the village church and chapels, a fifth handled the painting and hundred of people put it their bit of time , expertise or money. The Panchayat and Govenment departments were cooperative. The house, built with love, has since been occupied. Look out for opportunities to help this Christmas season ... in your own locality. Help build up local initiatives, they can do big things. The Goa Bachao Abhiyan, the SEZ Virudhi Manch, the Keri Nagrik Samitee, The Sancoale Group, the People's Movement Against SEZ are all success stories of a few men, women and children coming together and bringing Government after Government and Businessman after businessman to its knees to keep the Goa the way we want it. We must also build up the initiatives like the one in Aldona. These initiatives also deserve the front page in the newspapers ...but will be lucky if they make page 7. Mog asundi. Miguel -- Forwarded message -- From: Rendeep Broad Band Cybercafe [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Dec 11, 2007 8:15 PM Subject: [aldona-net] A Report It was a poignant scene touching the hearts of people around on 3rd December when the newly built house of Perpetua Fernandes and fly was blessed and inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Sertorio Rodrigues Parish Priest of Aldona . A Christmas gift for the poor family at Quitula , aldona built at a cost of [INR] Rs. 2,50,000 approx thanks to the donations and contributions of people mainly Aldonkars from all over the world. The house comprises of a balcony, sitting room, bedroom, bathroom dining room and kitchen standing high elegantly impressive and appreciated and admired by a large number of people who attended the inaugural ceremony. An appeal was made in the Church and Chapels by the Parish priest and on the Internet [Aldona Net] by Savio Figueiredo and donations kept puring in and many did not want their names to disclosed - a marvelous gesture in the present day world of egoism and selfishness. Much of the work was carried out at cost and voluntary service rendered by several people due to which helped restrict the expenses. A Committee under the Chairmanship of Rev. Fr Sertorio Rodrigues, Parish Priest of St. Thomas Church-Aldona and consisting of Mr. Freddy D'Souza, Blaise Cruz, Savio Figueiredo and Rosario Fernandes worked relentlessly and selflessly to bring the project to its successful completion. Plans, estimates and the construction work was carried out by Rosario Fernandes and his team of Umesh Marathe, Jatin Mondal, Gajanan Haldankar, Basavaraj. Electrical work was undertaken by Jose Dias, painting by Thomas Tavares. Substantial contribution cames from Mr. Shakoor Qadri who donated doors, windows and other materials. There was total help and co-operation from the Panchayat, Electricity Dept, Water Supply Dept for the smooth completion of this project. At the conclusion of the function the proud owner of this beautiful house could only express a big thank you to all, with a voice choked with emotion and eyes filled with tears. This is the second house built by the same voluntary Committee for poor deserving people of Aldona village within a year of initiation. Fr. Vicar complimented the people for their kind gesture and magnanimity Mr. Freddy gave a detailed report of the project and Mr. Savio Figueiredo, while expressing thanks to various donors and contributores, also expressed thanks to the family of Perpetua as it provided opportunity for the people to come forward generously to contribute and assist a worth cause. Young people and especially women want to manifest their freedom to marry a person of their choice and not one of their parent's choice. And I say good for them. It is time that male unwarranted hegemony on this highly personal issue came to a rapid end. RESPONSE: Dear Cornel, I assure you this dynamic that has occurred in London and Toronto, has simultaneously occurred in Goa as well. Catholic girls are well educated; in contrast per cent of the male population drops out early to pursue careers that earn hard cash. As a result our qualified girls find it hard to meet prospective grooms within the stifling divisions of caste. A lot of Goan girls and boys marry fellow Indians, from Kerala or Bangalore. A lot of the girls (and boys) marry outside their own caste because finding a suitable partner within is not a viable option. Many young people meet their prospective partners at college or at the work place, where attraction and compatibility are considered important rather than caste. Cornel writes: But, Catholic' Goan caste/casteism is definitely rife in Goa. Indeed, Goa reeks of caste in its provincial atmosphere. It is a major generator of caste categorisation. However, it ceases to be so strong in the metropolis of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkota etc. RESPONSE: I don't know how accurate you are in this description of Goa being a major generator of caste catergorisation. Infact caste is very much a problem in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkota where societies cling to their need to marry within the caste system, and this desire like the desire to have a male child cuts across all economic barriers. Cornel writes: Education and material prosperity has taken the wind out of casteists and they cannot even provide a rationale for their beliefs when challenged to do so. RESPONSE: Education and material prosperity has played the same role in Goa as it has in London. Most notably the prosperity of the Gulf Goans has had a major equalising effect on Goan society. I'm sure pockets of caste exist in Goa, especially in the bedrooms and dimly lit corridors of Old Power but, is it widespread, is its influence debilitating Goan society, is it affecting anyone's life on a day to day basis? * * * 2007 ANNUAL GOANETTERS MEET - GOA * * * WHERE: Foodland Cafe - Miramar Residency - Miramar, Goa WHEN: December 27, 2007 @ 4:30pm More info: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-December/066098.html Dear doutorbab Santosh, Aum tujem borem magtam, ani tum mujea mhatear kopel ghaltai? Ha! Sure, it's an excellent idea, but with my present work, I'm afraid I will not be able to take it up. But, should anyone do that, I promise to readily share my entire repertoire ... all in third person, though (I've myself never witnessed any of these so-called super natural phenomena.) I didn't call you a skeptic, though what I meant was that you won't take anything without questioning it in a rational way. As it ought to be. Anant Ramkrishna Sinai Dhume was an experienced Land Surveyor, whose work took him far and wide in Goa. His native village, Cumbarjua -- of which I happen to be a grandson -- cradles many a tale of ghosts, and sprits possessing humans. Dr. Nandkumar and Prajal, yes, have written, but I don't think either will have the time for that now. Anyways, glad you look at the issue from a wider angle. If some netters could launch three new threads on each of those subjects and everyone would share their experiences, I'm sure Cecil Pinto and Frederick Noronha would only be glad to publish them in book form (with a foreword by Dr. Santosh Helekar, of couse!) Just a thought. Dear Valmikibab, Like Venantius, I would be delighted to contribute to such a book. Indeed, I think a good comprehensive book on Goan ethnography is long overdue, and I firmly believe that you are the right person to write it. Contrary to what you might be thinking, my interest in this matter, as with most other things, is not that of a skeptic but that of a naturalist. I think these practices have to be studied as natural phenomena. They have much to teach us about ourselves, and from my particular vantage point, about how our brains work. I have often told my friends here that the little place I hail from is a microcosm of mental and sociocultural phenomena preserved in their original pristine state. The confluence of two mutually contradictory religions mixed with a rich assortment of folk traditions in Goa has produced more rites, rituals and beliefs per square kilometer than in any other place in the world. The need to document them in excruciating detail is paramount and urgent. Please tell me how I can help you in this endeavor. Cheers, Santosh P.S. I am aware that Paul Axelrod, M. N. Pearson and others, and our own amateur anthropologists such as Anant Dhume (to whom you refer), Nandakumar Kamat and Prajal Sakhardande, have written on this subject in recent times. Perhaps, Nandakumar and Prajal can help you develop a more focused, thorough and comprehensive exposition of this subject in your book. --- Spread the Christmas Cheer, even when you're not here! Send classic greetings to your loved ones in Goa. EXPRESSIONS - 2007 Christmas Hamper Visit http://www.goa-world.com/expressions/xmas/ Or e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---
[Goanet] SEZ and the BJP in Goa now.
* * * 2007 ANNUAL GOANETTERS MEET - GOA * * * WHERE: Foodland Cafe - Miramar Residency - Miramar, Goa WHEN: December 27, 2007 @ 4:30pm More info: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-December/066098.html Dears, The leader of the opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar, addressing a press conference , has made to very valid points: # 1. MLAs on the side of the treasury benches who are genuinely opposing the SEZs, cutting across the party lines, should say so in the House. #2. Mr Parrikar also said that he had attended the recent meeting of the task force constituted by the government to formulate a new Regional Plan. Even though the chairperson as well as the convenor of the task force had no courtesy to attend such an important meeting, the other task force members were of the general opinion that all the efforts to formulate the new Regional Plan would go in vain if the SEZs and such similar establishments including habitats and parks are allowed to come up, he pointed out. The only point left to be understood is wether MLAs of the Ruling Party/Parties at any given time or year have anything called Conscience voting. It is nice that the fact that neither the Convenor nor the Chairman of the Task Force attend its meetings has come on public record. I hope Mr. Parrikar has sent a written protest to that effect, too. Watch out for a fresh notification in the OFFICIAL GAZETTE of Goa regarding the extension of time for the INTERIM REPORT of the Task Force on RP 2021. Nothing is going to happen on 15 December . in 2007 at least! Mog asundi. Miguel BJP says no to SEZs in state NT Staff Reporter Panaji, Dec 10 The Bharatiya Janata Party, while maintaining a no to special economic zones in Goa, today demanded thatthe government freeze all such policies which would encourage population increase in the state through mass influx. The leader of the opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar, addressing a press conference said that all such policies should be kept on hold for at least a year, and a survey be undertaken to study the economic structure required by the state. The BJP will corner the government during the winter session of the state assembly scheduled to begin from January 10, next year, on this issue, he informed, adding that the MLAs on the side of the treasury benches who are genuinely opposing the SEZs, cutting across the party lines, should say so in the House. The leader of the opposition also said that unless the SEZ permissions are withdrawn and authorities directed to take back the land, the Regional Plan cannot be formulated. The task force is convinced on this argument, he stressed. Fortunately, the people are doing what the government should have done, through their opposition to the SEZs, Mr Parrikar remarked, maintaining that the government has failed on both -- administration, and law and order -- fronts. The BJP actively supports the agitation of the Taleigao residents against the IT Habitat coming up on the Dona Paula plateau, but in no way, is either supporting or justifying the violent act that took place at the IT Habitat, during midnight, last week, he said, stating, the failure to maintain law and order situation in the area should be credited to the police as much as to the government. The administration has totally collapsed with a number of incidents proving this point, Mr Parrikar said, pointing out, This includes violent fights between the clerks in the government office at Sanguem, fight between the doctors at the Hospicio Hospital, robbery at the city residence of a retired senior police officer, recent custodial death of Francis D'Cruz, mysterious explosion in an apartment at Porvorim, unsolved hit and run cases at Mardol, Altinho-Panaji and so on. We will raise all these issues during the assembly session, he reiterated. Replying to a question, Mr Parrikar said that the Speaker, Mr Pratapsingh Rane by appointing Mr Rajesh Patnekar as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, in place of Mr Agnelo Fernandes has followed the convention, but it is just a face saving decision as the post should have ideally gone to the leader of the opposition. However, we
