A new API called GtkTooltip replaces an API called GtkTooltips? Seems
like that could become very confusing.. especially when using two or more
GtkTooltips. Couldn't you have came up with something a little more
 imaginative? :)

Perhaps GtkTooltipEx?

GtkTooltippr?

Re: Supporting Gtk+ Maintenance

2007-03-14 Thread Jeff Waugh
quote who=Tim Janik

So for the foundation board, there are two things that can be done
 to improve the current situation:

 1) Please present the issue at hand (this email and the email linked
to above) to the advisory board members, to make sure the companies
involved are aware of the situation. And if possible, spread the
word to other involved parties or (non advisory) companies.

Your timing is fantastic -- we're having an Advisory Board meeting tomorrow
morning. I will bring it up then. :-)

 2) Please investigate if the hiring/sponsoring of a full time Gtk+
maintainer position by the Gnome foundation is also a possibility.

Current and previous boards have been very cautious about the idea of hiring
developers. We'd prefer to hire people who can support the work of hackers.
That's not to say it's completely off the table, but there's more we can do
with contributing companies beforehand.

Just for the record, I'm taking this issue very seriously. It's one of the
reasons I brought up GTK+ collaboration with the GNOME Foundation (and the
other project mentioned during the GTK+ meeting at GUADEC).

Thanks,

- Jeff

We are aiming for a GTK+ 2.12 release around January '07 [1]. I hope to

Based on past experience and declarations of never again, I think we (for
GNOME release management) need to be vry careful about depending on
unstable GTK+ releases.

(2.12 plans look very lovely indeed.)

GTK+ 2.10 on track for GNOME 2.16?

2006-04-25 Thread Jeff Waugh
Hi Matthias and GTK+ dudes,

Just wanted to check with you that GTK+ 2.10 is on track as per the 2.10
plan page [1], such that we can depend on all your cool new work in GNOME
2.16. If your plans have changed, an update and recommendation as to what we
do in the 2.15 tree would be greatly appreciated.

If so, we will announce on devel-announce-list that GNOME will target GTK+
2.10. It would be really sweet if you guys could do a developer-focused run
down of the new bits in 2.10, and porting information where applicable.

Thanks,

- Jeff

I am still trying to get 2.9 releases out before the end of April,
although it is looking a bit tight. Need to get the async filechooser
branch merged first. As soon as that has happened, I'll go into release
 mode...

Does it feel/look like you'll meet the May target mentioned in the 2.10 plan
page? I'd start feeling uncomfortable if it slipped much beyond May or June,
from our previous experiences with synching GTK+ and GNOME releases. There's
great stuff in 2.10 that would be disappointing to miss out on. :-)

If you guys need help with anything, can we help spread the word for you?

Re: GNOME 2.11/2.12 targeting GTK+ 2.8 (ie cairo based)

2005-06-09 Thread Jeff Waugh
quote who=Mark McLoughlin

I think these kind of questions are only relevant in the context of
deciding on the *gtk* schedule. I don't think they're very relevant in the
context of deciding whether GNOME 2.12 should use GTK+ 2.8. If we're all
confident the schedules line up, then I don't think there's really any
 more discussion to be had.

That said, we were pretty confident that previous attempts at lining up the
schedules were going to work, but we were bitten in the end by late delivery
*and* GTK+ being less robust than we're used to (spoilt brats that we are).

So Mattias, it would be great if you could get agreement on feature culling
and schedule changing from the GTK+ team, and let us know what the final
decision is. Perhaps it's better for GTK+ to go for broke on the new stuff,
and meet us for 2.14, perhaps not.

But I think we can only safely target GTK+ 2.6 at the moment, given our past
experience and information we have to hand.
