If the default progress bar in GTK isn't what you are looking for then you can 
always make your own. You can design it how you want easy enough with a drawing 
area. With GTK3 you have OpenGL, Cairo, gradients, tensor-product patch meshes, 
etc. to draw with. You even have a frame clock for smooth animation if you 
want. If you figure out a progress bar that you like you can even package it as 
a re-usable object so that you can create many instances of the progress bar at 
once if you so need.

Yes maybe. I am subscribbed to gtk-list, gtk-app-devel, gtk-source-view 
and gedit list. The last two are absolutely death. Someone told me to
try IRC, so I joined it some months ago for a few hours, there was no
traffic at all, so I disconnected...

Other places? Years ago there was a web forum without much traffic, I
am not sure if that still exists. Well I have never looked on Facebook
or youtube for GTK people :-)

People generally start in age about 12 with programming, and they like
to do something that is fun. 5 lines CSS code to change a color is not
that much fun unfortunately. Do you think they come back to GTK when
they have threir PhD? At least, the few GTK coders I am aware of are
all 30 or more years old, most are even older.

Currently I am working on high level gobject introspection Nim bindigs,
as you may remember...

You're explicitly asking about GTK+ 2.x, whose API was last updated 6
years ago, and whose initial release was in 2001.

GTK+ 2.x had a *very* simple theming API because all themes were
basically shared libraries injecting custom rendering into
applications.

GTK+ 3.x, at least, has CSS.

Of course, some people will moan that there isn't a function called
"gtk_widget_set_this_color()".

I don't know who these "kids" are, but if you mean "newcomers", I've
only seen people asking about changing colours of GTK widgets from

Usually, coming from software developers that are writing ad hoc
applications coming from other, or older, platforms, whose only
benefit is that they make it "easy" to change the colour of buttons in
UIs.

And for personal use it should be OK.

progress bar color

Hi,
I'm still having a problem changing the color of a progress bar in one of
my programs using gtk 2.0. I've extracted the offending code into a
trivial test program and I still can't make it work. Can anyone tell me
what I'm doing wrong? I've modified the colors of various other widgets in
the app and these work fine. I'm sure I've done this under gtk1.2 using
modify_style and it worked ok then.

 I'm still having a problem changing the color of a progress bar in one of
 my programs using gtk 2.0. I've extracted the offending code into a
 trivial test program and I still can't make it work. Can anyone tell me
 what I'm doing wrong? I've modified the colors of various other widgets in
 the app and these work fine. I'm sure I've done this under gtk1.2 using
 modify_style and it worked ok then.

Probably you theme - your test program works fine for me in the
default theme, but Red Hat's Bluecurve theme ignores the
progress bar color from the theme - I think it uses a pixmap.
Other theme engines may do similar things.

If you want to ignore the theme for the widget, an old fashioned:

 style = gtk_style_new ();
 gdk_color_parse (red, style-bg[GTK_STATE_PRELIGHT]);
 gtk_widget_set_style (widget, style);
 g_object_unref (style);

Should do it. Standard disclaimers about the affects on consistency
and accessibility of ignoring the theme and of setting your own
colors.

Thanks very much to all who replied. Yes I am using the default bluecurve
theme and this must be the reason I'm having a problem. The application is
controlling some hardware and I'm using the bars to display various
changing parameters. Using different colors enables the operator to be
able to differentiate between them easily.

  gtk_widget_modify_bg(battmon-battstatus, GTK_STATE_PRELIGHT,
 (battmon-colorC));

  works for me (replace battmon-battstatus,(battmon-colorC) for the
 appropiate variables)

I am reluctant to ask this and my only excuse is that I have never before
had a problem setting widget colors with either gtk1.2 or 2.X. Anyway here
goes! How do I change the color of the bar in a gtk progress bar in GTK2.2
I have tried all the usual gtk_widget_modify fg,bg etc and after searching
the archives have tried PRELIGHT as well as the usual NORMAL and ACTIVE
