Delhi to play host to a momentous event

Actress Thalia Prokopiou (centre), acting as a high priestess, lights the torch with the Olympic flame, using the rays of the Sun, in the ancient sanctuary where the Olympic Games started in 776 B.C., during a dress rehearsal.

Delhi, which has been one of the major cities on the sporting map, will for the first time witness and play host to the famed Olympic Flame as the Torch Relay will reach the Capital city on June 10, 2004 with the motto "Pass the Flame, Unite the World''.
The Olympic Flame will arrive in Delhi from Beijing at around 9-45 a.m. on June 10 by a special flight. The Torch Relay through Delhi will pass through a 33-kilometre route touching some of the city's world-renowned historical monuments and world heritage sites.
The relay -- which will have a total of 105 torchbearers -- will begin from the historic Qutab Minar at 2 p.m. The monument has been chosen as besides being the icon of Delhi, it was also the site of the first settlement in Delhi. Representative of the confluence of Hindu and Islamic cultural streams, it would project the rich cultural heritage of the Capital in the right spirit.
According to Delhi Government sources, along the route the torchbearers will be assisted by thousands of volunteers who have come forward to be a part of this momentous event. The torchbearers will be cheered by children, college students, celebrities and thousands of citizens all along the relay route.
Of the torchbearers, 30 have been selected by the Delhi Government and the Indian Olympic Association through a closed nomination procedure. They include medal-winners and Arjuna Awardees as also those who have participated in Olympics and expressed their desire to be a part of the Relay. The other torchbearers were selected by Coca-Cola and Samsung - being the official sponsors of the relay -- as also by the International Olympic Committee.
The relay would also present before the world Delhi's rich and varied history as the route will include the picturesque Humayun's Tomb and the majestic Red Fort, which represent the architectural grandeur of the Mughals, as also Lutyens' Delhi leading up to India Gate - a war memorial built by the British in which another memorial "Amar Jawan Jyoti'' was set up in 1972.
At these stops, the Delhi Government will organise an event to reflect Delhi's heritage, unique cultural offerings and spirit. A procession of camels and elephants has also been planned to accompany the torchbearers down Rajpath. The relay will culminate at the National Stadium - where the first Asian Games were held in 1951 -- at 7-30 p.m.
A grand end-of-the-relay celebration would follow which would bring alive the glorious heritage of art, culture, music and dance, as also India's links with Greece, the host country for Olympics 2004. The cultural programme to be organised by the Art and Culture Department of Delhi Government will see the Olympic Flame against a fascinating backdrop of mesmerising performances by renowned masters of these art forms.
Stating that for the modern Olympic Games, the flame is a manifestation of positive values that have always been associated with fire, the Delhi Government held that the passage of the flame through India is significant in that it highlights the cultural similarities between the ancient civilisations of Greece and India.
It said the Indian values of tolerance, peaceful co-existence, non-violence, unity and multi-culturalism are in conformity with Olympic ideals and India has traditionally been at the forefront of the sports movement with Delhi - the host city of the first Asian Games in 1951 and the 1982 Asiad - taking pioneering initiatives for the promotion of sports and the Olympic movement in the country. Further, Delhi's winning of the bid to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games has reinforced the nation's commitment to promoting sports and its capability to organise and host world-class sporting events in the future.
