Sacred Heart duo take up world quiz challenge By REBECCA TORR MANAMA: Two outstanding Sacred Heart School students are representing Bahrain in a three-day international quiz contest, which began yesterday in Calcutta, India. Indians Dean Pereira, 11, and Pratik Engineer, 12, along with teams from more than 100 other schools worldwide are taking part in India's longest-running quiz on air - the Cadbury's Bournvita Quiz Contest. The brainy duo, who left Bahrain to take part in the contest last Friday, are being accompanied by Sacred Heart School Hindi teacher and Pratik's mother Gita Engineer. The Cadbury's Bournvita Quiz Contest quarter-finals were held last night, while the semi-finals take place today and the finals tomorrow. The contest, which has been going since 1972, focuses mainly on general knowledge questions, but over the years has introduced rounds such as the Stop the Clock Round - Quick Math. This year organisers have introduced a round to test confidence and one member from each team will be tested on their ability to speak extempore (ad-lib). Score The designated participant will speak on the subject for 30 seconds and participants will be judged on clarity, content and the ability to convince Indian quizmaster Derek O'Brien about their point of view. Teams can score a maximum of 20 points for this round. In the other rounds, including general knowledge and mathematics, teams can score a total of 120 points. "The school has tried its very best to coach its students and has even conducted a few quizzes to give them much needed practice," said Indian Club Inter-School Quiz Contest organiser and Indian Club treasurer Santosh Karkera. "However, the boys seems to be taking it very cool. "The boys are very confident and should surely reach the finals. Four schools go through to the finals and if they reach them they will receive a scholarship to pay for their school fees. Dean and Pratik qualified for the contest after they won the first Indian Club Inter-School Quiz Contest last September at the Indian Club's open arena in Manama. The masterminds competed against 80 other teams from 10 different Bahrain schools in the preliminary round and five other teams in the final - winning by 15 points. They enjoy reading, sports and watching reality and discovery channels. The Bahrain team is being sponsored by Gulf Air and Jet Airways and the entire event is being filmed for broadcast around the world on Sony TV, starting from next month.
