May Queen Ball on 05-05-05 Staff Reporter/Gulf Times Newspaper Qatars Goan Welfare Association (GWA) is to organise fifth anniversary of its traditional annual May Queen Ball on May 5 at the Diplomatic Club from 8pm. The ball, a dinner dance, will feature a top band from Goa, its organisers said. Since it is the 5th anniversary, the function has been titled as 05-05-05. The highlight of the day will be crowning of the 5th May Queen by Hindi film stars, who will be attending the function.It will be a historical event this year with 15,000-watt sound and glittering lights producing magical effects, said Simon DSilva, president of the association. Last years event was a tremendous success attended by 1,500 guests, including Bollywood stars, diplomats, and other guests. Chief guests in the past balls have included Indian stars Aftab Shivdasani and Remo Fernandes, and former Goan minister Jose Filipe DSouza.Goas legendary host Updesh Swar will emcee the Doha show. Updesh, who was the official host for the cultural programmes during the President of Indias visit to Goa, also hosted the Arlem Festival, the Miss Goa beauty pageant and the International Food and Cultural Festival for several years. He has also hosted several high-profile shows, including successful May Balls in Dubai and Qatar. WATER FOR LIFE: THEME FOR WORLD WATER DAY: WORLD WATER DAY BEING CELEBRATED ON MARCH 22, 2005PRIYARANJAN DASMUNSHI TO INAUGURATE: DELHI CHIEF MINISTER TO ALSO ADDRESSDR. KIRIT PARIKH TO DELIVER KANWAR SAIN MEMORIAL LECTURE ON WATER DAY Shri Priyaranjan Dasmunshi, Minister for Water Resources will inaugurate the national function on March 22, 2005 in New Delhi for celebrating the World Water Day. This would be organized in association with various Ministries, Departments, Non-Governmental Organizations working in Water Resources sector and United Nations System. Important speakers at the celebration would include the Chief Minister of Delhi Smt Shiela Dixit while Dr Kirit Parikh, Member, Planning Commission will deliver the Kanwar Sain Memorial Lecture. The technical sessions would include presentations by experts on the theme of World Water Day: Water for Life. In India, World Water Day is being observed on this day in March every year along with the Curtain Raiser Function of Water Resources Day in Delhi. In view of the importance of the occasion, the theme and also the thrust given to water sector in the National Common Minimum Programme of the Government of India, World Water Day 2005 is observed every year at various places throughout the country. The celebration will mark the curtain raiser for Water Resources Day 2005, which will be observed in April 2005. The theme of the Water Resources Day is Economic Development of perennially flood-prone areas. The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed in its resolution in December 2003 that 2005-2015 will be International Decade for Action, Water for Life. As per the UN release, the decade sets the worlds goals on a greater focus on water-related issues, while striving to ensure the participation of women in water-related development efforts, and further cooperation at all levels to achieve water-related goals. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on 22nd December, 1992 by which 22nd March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting in 1993.
