[Gulf Goans] Melroy Rebello Does It Again For Navelim

2005-04-26 Thread Goa's Pride goa-world.com

Rebello Does It Again For Navelim

Melroy Rebello scored his consecutive second hatrick in the Bahrain Goans Seven-a-side Football League for Father Felcio Diniz Trophy as Verna crumbled under pressure of Navelim loosing 8 - 1.
In the match played at East Riffa open ground on Friday, Verna without their regular goalkeeper allowed Navelim strikers to score at will and Rebello topped the list with 5 goals. The two former senior division players from Goa Henry Fernandes and Ciril Baretto added one each and substitute Ronnie Rebello rounded off the tally for Navelim while the consolation goal for Verna came off the boots of Joaquim Fernandes.
In the matches played at Al Qadisiya ground on Wednesday night Chinchinim and Vasco opened their account on the points table with a 1 - 1 draw. Chinchinim took the lead soon after the breather through Concy D’Souza and Alfredo Fernandes converted a floater from the flag post with a fine header to equalise for Vasco. Inacio Vales played a pivotal role in marshaling the Vasco defence and a couple of superlative saves by the Vasco goalkeeper Joseph Fonseca denied full points to Chinchinim.

In the other match Benaulim and Canacona took to the field with a sense of urgency but the front-line of both the teams failed to translate their opportunities into goals and the first half ended goal less. Early in the second half Michael D’Souza connected a measured cross with a rasping left footer to put Benaulim ahead and minutes later he used his other foot to beat Canacona goalkeeper Angus Arokiaswamy to seal the victory for his team 2-0. Referee Sadanand Naik booked AP Prasad of Benaulim for dangerous play.

[Gulf Goans] Is Konkani dying?

2005-04-26 Thread http://www.goa-world.com/goa/

Is Konkani dying? A. S. Prabhu, Moira.
I HAVE BEEN a witness to the language controversy raging in Goa for the past three decades. So much so that it acquired agitational approach taking a toll of several people, the most known is one Floriano Vaz, who innocently under the patronage of fence sitters met with his death and was declared a martyr.
Over the years the Konkani movement has been politicised by governments in power. The moot question coming to my mind is, Has Konkani achieved the desired status? As a blue blooded Goanborn and bred on this sacred red soil and now in my late 60s, I emphatically say, NO. Why and who is to be blamed for this mess? Some wizards say that the colonial rulers are to be squarely blamed for keeping killing the language. Agree, but what have we Indians done in the last 43 years?
I give the sequence of events that may answer some of these pertinent questions. Konkani is a language derived from Sanskrit and is spoken in different parts of the Konkan Region of Maharashtra, Karnataka and parts of Kerala in differing accents. But the heartland of Konkani is Goa where more than 95% of the population speak and use use it. Except that for a bigger part of Portuguese rule it was transcripted in Roman script as Devanagri script was not popular. This is past and let it be buried under the debris. Let us move ahead.
Konkani has been accorded ‘Official language' status in Devanagri. Have any serious efforts been made by all the successive governments to ensure that it moves forward so that it can be used for official transactions? If Konkani is not moving forward it is solely because of Goans who have an aversion for their mother tongue and are obsessed with an inferiority complex. No language determines the status of a person, on the contrary knowledge of any language is an additional qualification. Personally I know seven languages almost to perfection but even at this age would not shy away from learning more languages.
I feel sad that in our villages even children of middle class families with illiterate or semi-literate parents feel shy to speak Konkani and fire English. Broken English like, "‘Mummy chicken where gone?" Even the rosary and church prayers are recited in English and not in our ‘mai bhas' (mother tongue). People do not like to be told the ground realities vis-à-vis this language controversy.
If this is the tendency how can Konkani come to the centre stage and acquire prominence? Go to any part of the world and the natives speak and write their own language. English is an international language and retains its prominence. A section of Goans are to be blamed for this sordid state of affairs. If Konkani has been preserved at last at this level the credit should go to our tiatrists and our clergy who have used if from time immemorial from stage and the pulpit for delivery of dramas/sermons/homilies. The lower strata of people and invariably Hindus whole heartedly use Konkani on a day-to-day basis. People should be realistic and not be enslaved by false pride and coin slogans like “Konknim uloi, Konnin boroi ani konnin raj choloi.”

[Gulf Goans] REFLECTIONS: JACKFRUIT (PON'NOS!) - Part I of II

2005-04-26 Thread DOMNIC FERNANDES http://www.goa-world.com/goa/

REFLECTIONS:
(PON'NOS!) - Part II of II
- By Domnic Fernandes

In the olden days, we used the "pank" to catch birds and squirrels. We would
place the "pank" on a piece of broken tile, climb up a tree and keep it in a
joint of the tree. We would also sometimes apply a thick layer of "pank" to
one of the branches of a tree. We would then place bait on the "pank" as an
attraction. Once a bird or squirrel sat on the "pank" it could not fly or move
forward. As soon as we heard their cries, we would climb the tree, bring down
the catch and place it in a cage. In the past, heated "pank" was employed as
household cement for mending earthenware, holes in roof tiles and buckets.

When I was 11 years old, I attended a wedding in Siolim which lasted 8 days –
4 days in preparation for the wedding and 4 days after the wedding. There was
a huge "Rosall" jackfruit tree behind the groom's house, the lower trunk of
which was filled with dozens of jackfruits. While we roamed the area, we
noticed crows pecking at ripe jackfruits. When we approached the tree, we
found out there were many ripe jackfruits. Since everyone was busy with
wedding preparations, nobody had found time to get to the tree. We politely
asked the "randpinni" (women cooks) to lend us a "konn'nn" (woven coconut
leaf) which they did. We immediately brought down all the ripe jackfruits from
the tree, placed them on the "konn'nn", tore the rind with our bare hands and
ate so much "ghore" that we had to skip lunch that day. The next day we ate
less "ghore" so that we could also eat some lunch.

In the olden days, whenever there was a bumper crop of jackfruit, people
made "GHOREACHIM SAT'TAM" out of jackfruit and used them as sweets during the
monsoon season. The preparation process is very simple:

Open "ghore," remove "bingttam" and tear open the "ghore" into two halves.
Then cover with plenty of sugar and let them dry in the hot sun for at least
for two days. When dried, put them in a container, preferably made of glass
with a tight lid to prevent ants from getting to them. Dried jackfruit tastes
much better during the monsoon season than in the summer. Enjoy it with a cup
of hot tea! In some cases, the ripe bulbs are dried, fried in oil and salted
for eating like potato chips.

Tender jackfruit leaves and young male flower clusters may be cooked and
served as vegetables. Immature fruit can be boiled, fried or roasted. Many
people in Goa, especially Hindus, prepare "ponnsachi bhaji" (jackfruit
vegetable) of young jackfruits. The fruit is simply cut into large chunks and
boiled in lightly salted water until tender, when the really delicious flesh
is cut from the rind and served as a vegetable, including the seeds which, if
thoroughly cooked, are mealy and agreeable. The "pank" clinging to the pot may
be removed by rubbing it with oil. Nowadays, everything is available in canned
form and jackfruit is not an exception, but there is no comparison to fresh
jackfruit. The crisp types of jackfruit are preferred for canning.

JACKFRUIT SEEDS

"Ponnsachim bingttam" (jackfruit seeds) are edible and nutritious. They
contain 38% carbohydrates, 6.6% proteins and 0.4% fats. In general, fresh
seeds are considered to be high in starch, low in calcium and iron and are
good sources of vitamins B1 and B2. They may be prepared in several ways. In
the olden days and till today, most people in Goa just boil them in hot water
or roast them in the hot coals of a dying fire. We would save the seeds in
a "varn" (a special pit meant to husk paddy) or in a corner of the kitchen and
make use of them at the beginning of the monsoon season. Whenever it rained
heavily, we would boil "ponnsachim bingttam" and enjoy eating them with a cup
of hot tea. Peeling seeds can be a tedious job, especially if they are not
well-cooked; if the skin is not cracked and has not come off the seed, it
makes it difficult for the thumb nail to dig into the skin. Usually, by the
time one is through peeling the seeds, the skin under the thumb tends to crack
due to constant use and pressure and it takes around 2-3 days for it to heal.

Jackfruit seeds are often included in curried dishes and added to meat instead
of potatoes. My "ghoramaim" (paternal grandmother) used them with "sukem,
dukrachem kharem mas" (dried, salted pork meat.) As a child, I would
accompany my "ghoramaim" to Vagator beach during her yearly salt bath. The
norm was to have three baths a day - morning, afternoon and evening - for 3 or
4 days. Every day, she would prepare "bhuti" (lunch pack) and wrap it in a
cloth to carry with us. The lunch mainly consisted of a dish of "sukem,
dukrachem kharem mas" which was prepared with onions, green chilies, tomatoes,
cumin, cloves, cinnamon, "bindichim solam," fresh coriander and "ponnsachim
bingttam." We carried the dish in a small "kullnnem" (a medium earthen utensil
mostly used for preparing curries meat.) Wheat chapatis were

REFLECTIONS:
 (PON'NOS!) - Part I of II

The jackfruit originated in India at the foot of the Western Ghats, and is now
very popular throughout South East Asia. The tree is handsome and stately, 30
to 70 feet tall, with evergreen, alternate, glossy, somewhat leathery leaves
which are oblong, oval or elliptic in form, 4 to 6 inches in length; juvenile
leaves are lobed. All parts contain "pank" (sticky white latex.) Short, stout
flowering twigs emerge from the trunk and large branches, or even from the
soil-covered base of very old trees. It cannot tolerate "wet feet." If the
roots touch water, the tree will not bear fruit or may die. A good yield is
about 150 large fruits per tree annually, though some trees bear as many as
250 and a fully mature tree may produce 500, these probably of medium or small
size. A jackfruit tree is said to live as long as 100 years. However,
productivity declines with age. Almost everyone in Goa grows jackfruit trees
and they can be seen in every compound/backyard in villages as well as in
towns.

The fruit is unusual as it is borne on the main branches and the trunks,
occasionally even from surface roots of the tree. It is the largest tree-borne
fruit in the world, weighing from 10 to 60 or even as much as 110 pounds, and
up to 36 inches long and 20 inches in diameter. The rind or exterior of the
compound fruit is green or yellow when ripe and is composed of numerous hard,
cone-like points attached to a thick and rubbery, pale yellow or whitish wall.
The interior consists of large edible bulbs of yellow, banana-flavored flesh,
massed among narrow ribbons of thin, tough undeveloped perianths and a
central, pithy core. Each bulb encloses a smooth, oval, light brown starchy
seed covered by a thin white membrane.

The seed is 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches long and 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick and is white
and crisp within. There may be 100 or up to 500 seeds in a single fruit. The
aroma of the ripening fruit is extremely sweet, with a distinctive flavor
reminiscent of banana and pineapple. Once the aroma spreads, it cannot be
controlled; hence, the good old Konkani saying: "Pon'nos lipovn dovrunk zait
punn tacho pormoll lipovnk zainam!" (You may be able to hide a jackfruit but
you cannot hide its aroma!)

Jackfruits mature 3 to 8 months after flowering. The fruit is covered with
numerous hard points, is pale green in color and changes to a yellowish-brown
during ripening. Fruit is mature for harvest when the single small leaf above
the stem withers and the first color change occurs. Ripening continues post-
harvest and with experience is ascertained by tapping the fruit. When ripe,
the fruit softens a little and the rind will give in when pushed. Jackfruits
turn brown and deteriorate quickly after ripening. If a person is fat and has
a round stomach, people remark: "Zala polle pon'nos kosso!" (Look at him, he
has become like a jackfruit!) Sometimes, they jokingly tap his stomach and ask
him: "Pon'nos pikla re?" (Is the jackfruit ripe?)

Jackfruit is a summer fruit of Goa. It ripens principally from March to June.
It is one of those delicacies which once you begin to eat ends only when the
stomach is full. Many people at first hesitate to eat it because of the "pank"
but once they get the hang of eating it then there is no looking back;
jackfruit fondness grows with familiarity. This is how the good old
saying "Vokol ghore khainam mhunnon bingttanim varn bhorlelem" came to be
known. Roughly translated, it means the bride pretended not to eat jackfruit
and yet the pit was filled with seeds. Similarly, many people despise things
when they have had too much of them or had them for too long and here again we
have the Goan jackfruit-related saying: "Pott bhortuch ghore ambott!" (When
your stomach is full, carpel is sour.)

There are three types of jackfruits in Goa: (1) "Rosall Pon'nos" – having a
pale-brown or occasionally pale–green rind and containing small, fibrous,
soft, mushy, but very sweet "ghore" (carpel;) the rind can be broken open with
bare hands. Some women, when their husbands are aged, refer to them as "Rosall
Pon'nos;" (2) "Capo Pon'nos" - usually having a light-green rind, occasionally
brownish and containing crisp and almost crunchy "ghore" of high quality
though not quite as sweet; a knife is needed to cut open the rind; and
(3) "Capo-Rosall Pon'nos" - also having the same rind as that of Capo but
its "ghore" is a mixture of both - neither hard nor soft but sweeter than Capo
Pon'nos; also needs a knife to cut open the rind. The "char" (perianths) of
the Type 3 jackfruit is quite thick and as tasty as the fruit. As children, we
ate it as well.

Jackfruit trees of Type 1 mostly bear fruits at their lower trunks, whereas
Types 2 and 3 bear fruits high above on the tree. To remove jackfruits from
such trees, you climb up the tree with the help of a ladder, carrying with you
a "baincho razu" (well

[Gulf Goans] Parrikar for compensation to squall-affected within 48 hrs

2005-04-26 Thread GOAN VOICES goa-world.com

Parrikar for compensation to squall-affected within 48 hrs
NT Staff Reporter
Panaji April 25: The former chief minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar today expressed anguish over the delay caused in releasing the financial assistance to the recent squall-affected people across the state and demanded that the assistance be released within 48 hours.Addressing a press conference at the state BJP headquarters, here this evening, Mr Parrikar said nearly six days have passed after the squally winds accompanied by rains lashed Goa creating unprecedented destruction.
He said if the relief was not provided within 48 hours, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would be forced to launch agitation. Stating that his government had promptly provided financial assistance in the past, Mr Parrikar demanded that the concerned secretary and the chief secretary should immediately take steps to release the assistance to the affected farmers, fishermen and others. He said it was unfortunate that the government machinery had not taken any steps on the issue.
Without naming anyone, Mr Parrikar said just merely taking darshan of the ‘trawlers’ would not solve the problems and demanded that the state administration to provide assistance to the fishermen, whose trawlers were damaged. The state calamities fund has a sufficient amount, he said and various authorities have power to provide funds immediately.
Referring to the matter over releasing nearly 8,000 cheques under Dayanand Social Security Scheme (DSSS), Mr Parrikar said his government had assured the beneficiaries that the cheques would be released by February and the necessary formalities were completed accordingly. However, he said till date the administration had failed to release these cheques through post. Mr Parrikar said if the DSSS cheques were not posted immediately, the BJP would launch agitation forcing the state administration to post these cheques.
Referring to the allegation leveled by the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president, Mr Luizinho Faleiro over the high cost incurred on the Rawanfond bridge, Mr Parrikar said the Congress leaders should first check the records with the administration before making allegations. Mr Parrikar said the total cost on the construction of the Rawanfond bridge was Rs 1.90 crore and not Rs 2.38 crore as being alleged by Mr Faleiro.
Mr Parrikar said Mr Faleiro had protested over the construction of the bridge and in view of this agitation the GSIDC was forced to construct the by-pass. On another allegation over the IFFI-related projects, Mr Parrikar said the Congress government had stopped the payments to the contractors, who were supposed to complete their works. Denying that the cracks had developed at certain places, Mr Parrikar said the Congress leaders were showing the expansion joints as cracks. He said for any new project the expansion joints were filled at a later stage and during the time of IFFI there was no monsoon and the contractors were supposed to fill these joints during February-March. The contractors had not completed the works as the Congress government had stopped the payments.
Over Ribander by-pass, Mr Parrikar said after receiving a complaint from two tenderers, his government had sought re-quoting the tender again to clear any doubts. The Congress leaders should ask the administration to institute the vigilance inquiries into the IFFI-related projects. To a question, Mr Parrikar said the government has power to give extension of work to the same contractor, if the work needed to be carried out in the same periphery. In view of this provision, Mr Parrikar said the contract of the secretariat annexe was awarded to the contractor of the secretariat at the same rate. The state BJP spokesman, Mr Govind Parwatkar was present.

Cashew farmers of Goa are a happy lot nowadays, with a bumper cashew crop this season, they are sure of producing a bountiful of "feni", a local liquor-based brew usually made from ripe cashew kernels.

Producing feni is one of the most popular part time businesses of the cultivators here. Cashew feni, which is brewed during the months of April and May, provides them with extra easy money.
The easy-to-manufacture and extremely cheap liquor helps each farmer earn as much as Rs.50,000 in a short span of three months.

Feni is made by using the traditional method where the cashew apples are manually crushed in a Coimbi (a rock on the hill which is carved or shaped like a basin) with an outlet for the juice. The juice is then collected in a huge earthen pot called Kodem, half buried in the ground, which is later distilled into earthen or copper pots.
Apart from Goa, such brew is produced only in Brazil where it is called Caxata. Considered as the major fruit of Goa, cashew harvest starts from mid-March and the season continues till the end of May. The liquor is distilled in three steps, - Urrac, Cazulo and Feni.
The juice, which trickles out in its concentrated form called Neero, is liked by many people since it helps bowel movement.
Swapandeshi Faldessai, cashew cultivator and owner of a makeshift distillery, said Goa is incomplete without Feni, which is also consumed for its medicinal value.
"We collect the cashew juice and process it here. It is processed twice and even more, the liquor is used in medicines also. It is very, very good and if the season is good then we can get up to 40,000-50,000 rupees earnings in just three months," said Faldessai.
There is another type of Feni, which is made from coconut and is also a popular hard drink in the former Portuguese colony.
There are about 4,000 mini traditional distilleries in Goa involved in producing cashew Feni, with about 75 per cent of them in north part of the state and rest in the southern region.
There are over 7,000 shops, bars and taverns in Goa selling Feni and other liquors.
According to provisional estimates, in 2004-05, India exported cashew kernels and cashew nut shell liquid worth 260 billion rupees as against 180 billion rupees in 2003-04. Total cashew exports from India in 2004-05 (April-March) are estimated at 125,000 tonnes.
India is world's largest cashew producer with a 50 percent share of the world market, followed by Brazil and Vietnam.
New methods like drum roasting and steam roasting have also replaced the old methods of ground roasting, iron-pan roasting and shelling by hammering the nut with either hard stones or bamboo sticks.
The cashew industry in India provides direct employment to over 35 million people and another 500,000 people are employed in the farms during the season.
Besides Goa, cashew cultivation is also done in southern Indian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and eastern Orissa. (ANI)

We are originally from Malwan in Maharashtra state and have been engaged in cashewnut processing since 1910. In the beginnign we did it in a small way as a cottage industry in Malwan. Initially our activity was
limited to de-shelling and packing cashewnuts in gunnybags and sending them to Mumbai and Karachi for sale. This was the beginning of the cashew industry in the world. This continued for a decade till one enterprising gentleman, a Torne from Vengurla, shipped first consignment of our product to the USA. But by the time the consignment reached America’s port in one and a half months there was infestation problem. You didn’t give up?Though our first shipment was a failure, it aroused American interest in the new product and American businessmen came down to India and held discussions with us. We, thereafter, shipped consignment of our cashewnut products with American technical collaboration in 1928. This was the time we came down to Goa from Malwan and started cashew processing industry. We were financed by an American food company and we started processing nuts on commission basis as per the requirements of that company. Our exports took off from then on and the cashew processing business activities spread on the west coast of India. What problems did you face after moving to Goa?We had problems of not finding labour and that is why the
