[Gulf Goans] KONKAN CURRY - by Miguel Braganza
www.goa-world.com KONKAN CURRY by Miguel Braganza The Reader is a designation of honour at any university. In rank, the Reader is a step higher than the Lecturer. The Reader is one who delves deep into the subject matter on which others lecture or demonstrate. He is the thinker and philosopher. So I believe is the Reader of my column. The reader is always the focus of what I write. This column is dedicated to you, dear reader. This column is titled the Konkan Curry as it will deal with the flavours of this coastal strip that has Goa at its heart, right there in the middle of it all! From Maharashtra to the northern end of the Malabar Coast in Kerala, the flavour of the Konkan changes ever so subtly. The taste remains the same. Goa is a hub of activity. It is the Front Office of the Konkan that is known to foreign and domestic tourists alike. Goa is identifiable as a brand, a quality assurance standard akin ISI, BIS or AGMARK. The tourist enterprise called Goa gets its supplies from various places. The vegetables from Belgaum, the onions from Nasik, flowers from Bangalore, Alphonso mangoes from Devgad, jamun from Kankavli or kokum syrup from Kudal are as much a part of Goa as Khola chillies from Canacona, cashew nuts from Bicholim and cucumbers from Farmagudi. The taste of Goa is that of a Konkan Curry. Hence, the name Konkan Curry. This is a can-do column that will share success stories that can be replicated and ideas that can be implemented. It will share the good news and occasionally look at the things that went wrong but can be corrected now for a better future. The story of Konkani or Konknni, the language of the Konkan and the official language of Goa, is one such topic. The tourism scenario is another. However, that will come later. Let us begin the journey with the best foot forward. Confucius is quoted as having said, A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. He might not have said it. Definitely, a mile was not a measure of distance in China during his lifetime. It does not really matter. It does not matter whether China attacked India in 1962 or vice-versa. Most people in the Konkan do not even know where Arunachal Pradesh is. So why argue about Aksai Chin? The fact remains: someone has to take the first step. It has been my fortune to have been associated with some good initiatives. The Konkan Fruit Festival facilitated by the Botanical Society of Goa (BSG) is one. The fruit growers and processors of the Konkan get a market and Goa gets the mileage. The Western Ghats Kokum Foundation (WGKF) is taking it a step further with another crop, Garcinia indica. Today, the National Horticulture Mission recognises it as a fruit crop instead of it being a minor spice that it was thus far. The Goa Heritage Action Group (GHAG) is documenting the built up heritage of Goa: houses, temples, churches, chapels, fort and moats. It has also ventured into the local dance forms. Some people in Goa have not seen Talgadi, Zagor or Goff. This weekend (29 30 October) they can both see and learn about them at Kala Academy, for free. They can also join me to watch the Davli Mandi, Chapay and Rannmale for the first time on Sunday. The Fontainhas Fest is also coming back with a bang in November. A magazine called Dulpod has been recently launched to promote music and performing arts of the Goa and Konkan. (Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]or [EMAIL PROTECTED]). It is nice to see the inclusive attitude widening its base. TEAM Together Everyone Achieves More. That is the motto of this Konkan Curry. Send in your suggestions and success stories. Please remember to include your address, email ID and phone number. More the merrier. Miguel Braganza is a Goencho Katri-panv [locally evolved hard-crust bread with four horns], horticulturist and editor of PLUS tabloids since 2001. [Gulf Goans] HAPPY DIWALI
Having a respite from the Supreme Court relaxing the Noise restriction rules to two hours after 10 p.m. only on special ocassions not exceeding 15 in a year the Narakasur event of burning of the effigy of a demon competion got underway at 1700 hrs in the State. Unlike last year where unprecedented showers played spoil sport this time by 2100 hrs. In Panaji and Margao this writer took a tour of the works underway in the evening, where a number of enthusiastic youth were seen making paper cane and metal fabricated narkasuras with some electronic gadgets in place to ensure hand and leg movement. others were practing the monotonous beat of a rattle that accompanies the dance of the demon effigy. In Margao the Solid Party organised the competition and also promoted a quiz competition amongst the audience on mythology but there were not much takers. Most of the effigies will later be burnt exactly at 12 p.m. and the next day will usher in the festival of lights. In Goa unlike during Ganesh Chaturti where the display of fireworks far excels that during Diwali this year with a demographic change in population seen with non Goans in almost every town and city the Narkasur celebrations have turned into a major activity, alongwith a cultural orchestra. North Indians were enthusiastic in most places, Dipawali lanterns adorned most of the shops and houses in Housing societies and lanes, Sweet meat stalls which now almost run parallel to number of bars under a heavy sweet meat selling lobby which even succeeded in getting tax reduction under VAT from the Goa Government reported thus far heavy business. Indian tourists are pouiring into the state with special trains and buses running packed beyond capacity. Goa the El Dorado of many Indians the sun sea and perhaps booze beckons many a traveller during this time of the year. Gujaratis account for the maximum family type tourists. [Gulf Goans] Its Divar vs Benaulim - Ligorio Silveira rolling trophy (Dubai)
ALDONA PARK PROJECT http://www.goa-world.com/goa/aldonapark/index.htm CLEAN GOA INITIATIVE http://www.goa-world.com/goa/clean/index.htm Its Divar vs BenaulimBy A Correspondent / Khaleej Times 1 November 2005 DUBAI Theres going to be a mouth-watering contest this Friday. It will also be an extremely competitive affair when Vanxim Divar take on ABC Benaulim. At stake is the magnificent Ligorio Silveira rolling trophy. But more than that, the fixture is to find out which village from that former Portuguese colony can strut around for a year as the second All-Goa inter-village football champions. And theres something on Friday, November 4, for the spectators too. During the semifinals at the Iranian stadium the organisers, All Star Entertainment and United Goans, dished out a home theatre system, DVD players, VCD/CD/MP3 players and a Jet Airways gift hamper to spectators through raffle draws. The organisers are now trumpeting that there will be even bigger prizes during the Finals. Last Friday Vanxim Divar showed why they are the defending champions as they humbled Fr Agnel Pilar EKFC 3-1 in an exciting and highly entertaining encounter. Although the Pilar defence of Manuel, Neves and Nelson kept the marauding Vanxim Divar attackers at bay in the early stages, they couldnt hold out for long. Noel broke through the barrier in the 12th minute and scored after a brilliant pass from Russell Rodrigues. Thomas, Andre and Rexon of Pilar then kept the Divar defence on their toes with repeated attacks. In the confusion there was a self goal by Russell J Rod in the 25th minute for Vanxim Divar and this brought thunderous applause and cheers from the Pilar supporters. Second half produced more excellent football. The 12th minute, yet again, saw Divar take the lead. It was Russell Rodrigues, with his speedy footwork and sudden burst of speed, who shocked the Pilar defence as he found the back of the net with a well-targeted shot. Instead of giving up, the Fr Agnel Pilar squad got even more pumped up. Yet for all their efforts, they just couldnt find the net. Randall Pereira, after many unsuccessful tries, finally found the net during injury time to put Vanxim Divar into the final by sealing off the score 3-1. Fr Agnel Pilar Emirates Flight Catering had some consolation when Andrew Moniz was adjudged Man of the Match and received his trophy from Benjamin Rodrigues of the organising committee. Earlier on Friday Raia edged past Aldona United 1-0 to enter the final of the plate competition. A hard tackle by Baptist Coutinho of Aldona on Santan Oliveira saw referee Mohammed Hussain award a penalty kick to Raia. Franky Gomes slotted the ball home cooly from the spot to take Raia to the plate final. Lester Pereira of Raia was named Man of the Match and the trophy was presented by Trevor Mascarenhas of Emirates. But Raias run came to an end in the final on Saturday when they lost to AVC Clipsal 3-2 via the tiebreaker after a goal less full time. Both teams were awarded trophies and medals. Benit DSouza of AVC was adjudged Man of the Match and he got his trophy from Nelson Silveira. Later on Saturday, ABC Benaulim downed SFX Old Goa 2-0 in a rough affair to set up a date with Vanxim Divar. It looked like national flag day as the referee flashed yellow and red cards left, right and centre. Strikers from both sides seemed to have left their scoring shoes behind at home. In the second half Idal Fernandes put Benaulim in front off a through pass from Roy Das. He then sealed their victory with another opportunistic but mesmerising goal. Old Goas retaliated so badly in frustration that Rickson Fernandes was given his marching orders by referee Mohammed Hussain for his horrendous tackle on Roy Das. Reagan also made his way to the bench after picking up two yellow cards and Old Goa finished a frustrating evening with just nine men on the pitch. The Goan tournament is sponsored by Vanxim Divar, Woodgroup Engineering Services, Modern Design Contracting Company and backed up by Refrigerate Equipment Enterprises, Gulf Ocean Lights, Al Rubaiya Construction and Building Materials and Emirates Flight Catering. Jet Airways, IBV Mybarid-International Business Ventures and Mr. Baker are also involved. [Gulf Goans] Goa warned about possible terror attack
"Goa warned about possible terror attack" Special Correspondent / The Hindu PANAJI: An international intelligence agency has sounded Goa's Tourism Minister Wilfred de Souza about a possible terrorist strike in Goa, which is a leading international tourist destination. Refusing to name the agency, Mr. Wilfred de Souza said some intelligence agencies were doing "routine scouting" in Goa as the tourism season was on, and during his interaction with one of them, he was alerted about a possible threat. Mr. Wilfred de Souza told presspersons at the State Secretariat on Monday that he immediately called the State's DIG of Police, Ujwal Mishra, and directed him to take preventive steps. Mr. Wilfred de Souza said in view of the serial blasts in Delhi, the State would not like to take any chances. However, he did not rule out the possibility of vested interests trying to damage Goa's tourism prospects. "After the recent Bali terrorist strikes and the serial blasts in Delhi, the threat perception to Goa is indeed high," Kiran Dhingra, Chief Secretary, told The Hindu. http://www.hindu.com/2005/11/01/stories/2005110107591200.htm - Forwarded by www.goa-world.com This first of its kind Gulf-Goans e-newsletter archived at www.yahoogroups.com/group/gulf-goans is dedicated to Goans around the Globe and is moderated/edited by Gaspar Almeida (since 1994) and presented by Ulysses Menezes, owner of http://www.goa-world.com website.
