Re: [h-cost] Gifted fabrics

2007-07-22 Thread Land of Oz

brown stains isn't really an option. I'll try the Oxyclean and see how
it comes out. Next step would be dyeing, but I worry about getting an
even job. I guess if all else fails I could get artistic with it. ;D

If you get to the point where you want to try the artistic route -- I'd use
a selection of similar colors and try for an effect similar to sponge
painting on walls.

Silk is so easy to dye -- you can sponge or squirt or drip acid dye in
random patterns, wrap in plastic and steam (over water or nuke it); then
rinse and repeat as often as you like. Buy some cheap silk scarves to
practice with if you have something specific in mind (and keep notes!).

I'm thinking of something like a very subtle camouflage (very subtle!)
Several shades of greens and browns swirled together and overlapping until
there is no real pattern just one color blending into the next.

I think I'd make pair of silk pajamas and maybe a lovely summer night gown
with the lightweight linen, but I can't help you with the historical
suggestions...

Hi De,
This thin linnen is not available today. I can tell that for sure.

How about using a thin silk in stead?

Thank you. The linens are still to thick. I am looking for linen that is
about as sheer as the veil on this Madonna
http://cgfa.sunsite.dk/lippi/p-lippi12.htm
or
http://cgfa.sunsite.dk/lippi/p-lippi1.htm

I know that one can get silk that sheer and I know there is cotton that
sheer but I am told that on can find linen that sheer.
Thank you,
De

You may be thinking of The Linen House.
http://thelinenhouse.com/http://thelinenhouse.com/ I have their
complete

sample collection.
Their Napoli, Voile De Lin, Lille, Roma Veneszia would all work for
under

clothing.

I'd say the Napoli is the softest and finest, but I bet if you wrote and
asked them they would help.

I'll be there in September! W! I wonder if they'd mind if I wrapped
myself up in a few yards just to get a rush!

Thanks for the site, Saragrace. Have you ordered from them and what do you
think of their linen? I am always looking for good sources. Also, what
sample cards did you order to get a range of what they offer? Do you mean
all of the Home Collection, New Card and Artist Canvas collections?

I'm easily confused!

(Have a grand time in Belgium! - we were there and in the Netherlands last
fall and the art museums are fabulous.)

Hmmm..I remember that at the end of the past discuss someone produced a
website so perhaps this woman is not the one I was thinking of. Please
hold
off on the email address. I guess what I am going to have to do is do a

that fails then I will be asking for the woman's email address.
  Thank you, greatly appreciated,

[h-cost] Seeking a citation

2007-07-22 Thread Robin Netherton

I'm hoping someone here can save me a long trip to an out-of-the way
library.

Does anyone have on hand a copy of this book:

An Illustrated Dictionary of Historic Costume (Dover Pictorial Archive
Series)
by James R. Planche

http://store.doverpublications.com/0486423239.html

Yes, I've ILL'd it, but that could take weeks.

What I really need is Planche's 1876 Cyclopaedia of costume, but this is
a facsimile of it and a lot more likely to be on people's shelves! If I
can ascertain whether the fact I'm looking for is in the book, I can meet
my immediate deadline, and check the real book (in a rare book room, not
particularly close) at my leisure to verify later.

I'm pretty sure no one here has Planche's 1847 History of British Costume
(or, for that matter, any of the other numerous later editions), but if
you do, please e-mail me.

20 1/2 yds for the Robe A l'francaise
http://www.simplicity.com/designNavigator.cfm?design=3637, sounds like
Simplicity has gone overboard as per usual on buying extra yardage for trim
rather than piecing scraps. Also I'm not sure about the shape and length of
that point, 18th century experts can correct me but in the line drawing it
doesn't look right and rather reminds me of a comment I heard about the
Shakespeare in Love pattern describing the look as 'bodice with a p*nis'
because there is just this narrow point sticking down at the front rather
than a more straight line heading downwards to make a V shape. The wig
really can't be helped, it's what you can buy easily from costume shops and
I doubt Simplicity would have bothered with a good one for a photo shoot
(and nothing above the neck is included in the pattern anyway). Although
with a saque gown you can get away with claiming it's pre 1770s and the big
hair trend hasn't really gotten underway yet.

[h-cost] Paul Poiret exhibit

2007-07-22 Thread Joan Jurancich
I just heard a story on NPR about a Paul Poiret exhibit at New York's
Metropolitan Museum of Art. Here's the link:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=12104454

It's only running through August 5th. It has 50 ensembles, most of
them ones he designed for his wife, Denise, and which have never
before been photographed or been on public display.

If anyone gets a chance to see it, a report would be appreciated.

Re: [h-cost] New Simplicity patterns

2007-07-22 Thread Carol Kocian

Actually that looks like the stays rather than a stomacher.
The shape and length looks fine. Generally the stomacher is where
you would have some contrast — a focal point. They have that with
the bows, but the stomacher could be a different color, too.

With the underpinnings (3635), it looks like the shift sleeves
are drawstring, which is not correct. Shift sleeves were gathered
into cuffs. Likewise the neckline should not be gathered, either.

The V at the bottom back of the stays is consistent on the
model and the line drawing, so it looks like it's part of the
pattern. And it's not right, either.

With a few adjustments, though, it could produce something decent.
