[h-cost] Searching for pattern

2014-03-11 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Does anyone here have a copy of Simplicity 3635 and 3637 (size 8-14) they
no longer need that I can buy or that I can borrow for personal use?
Its the blue 18th Century gown and panniers.

Many thanks,
Aylwen

[h-cost] friend going to Italy

2014-03-11 Thread Katy Bishop
I have a friend who is travelling to Italy next month, to Florence,
Balzano, Rome and Genoa, with a very brief visit to Venice and Naples too.

Doas anyone have any suggestions of museums or shopping for
costume/textile/lace related things not to miss?

I'm working on my wish list of what she should look for for me--living
vicariously through my friend's travel...

In Bolzano, DO NOT MISS the Ice Man. You can see all his clothing and
accessories. 5000 year old stitches!
South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology

I recommend arriving first thing in the morning to avoid crowds.

In Venice, everything is wonderful. I enjoyed the Palazzo Fortuny, which was
once the home of Mariano Fortuny, and is now a museum. There's a Fortuny
store as well, although not at the Palazzo.
I wanted to go to the island of Burano, for the lace, but didn't have time.
It is a beautiful place to visit.

There is a FABULOUS trim shop in Florence. They actually have 2 locations,
at least they did in 2002, when I went. Passamaneria Toscana, Piazza San
Lorenzo,12r, is the original store (since the 1950's).

2014-03-11 Thread Paula Praxis
Dear Aylwen,

Have you found the 2 patterns you are looking for?

I have both of them. The pannier pattern has been cut used but all sizes
(8-14) are there.

The gown has not been used and is still factory folded.

I can let you borrow them for free. I am a costumer for our local high
school in Santa Clarita, California, (just north of Los Angeles) so I really do
want to get them back.

Please contact me if you still need these,

In addition to what others have said, in Florence check out the Pitti
Palace - they have the Medici burial garments, and others:

http://archiviomedici.costume-textiles.com

Not a museum, but Alice's Masks do beautiful, beautiful work:

The Stibbert Museum also has a selection of costumes, including some of
Napoleon's coronation garments: http://museostibbert.it/en/page/costumes

Have fun, and I envy you the opportunity to go to Venice as well! Museo
Fortuny all the way!

Also, for shopping (which includes a lot of art, fabric, and jewelry
stores, in part catering to the conservation efforts of local museums), get

I have fond memories of the Stibbert decades agowalking past cabinets
crammed with costumes during our tour. It was a hidden gem. The Pitti was
closed for renovation when I was there. I wish I could sneak into her
suitcase.

Thanks!

[h-cost] gauging for gathers?

2014-03-11 Thread Marjorie Wilser
Just curious. . . I don’t have a good Elizabethan book to hand.

In period, is gauging/gathering appropriate for a skirt? Many thanks! I can do
it. . . but little tucks are easier. :)

Re: [h-cost] gauging for gathers?

2014-03-11 Thread Elizabeth Jones
I can't think of any Elizabethan images that show pleats as small as
those in mid 19th century skirts (which is the context in which I have
previously heard the term gauging) Cartridge pleats are one of the
types of pleats used but judging by portraits I wouldn't put in pleats
any smaller than 1 inch wide (i.e.I mean 1 inch as the section showing
on top of the pleat not the total amount of fabric taken up by the
pleat) for an Elizabethan skirt.
