Well, if it makes any difference to your decision, you could crash here along the way. I'm definitely not going, sad eyes and we would be happy to be a waystation for Easterners passing through Ohio. If your route involves Routes 30, 43, 77, 71, or the Ohio or Pennsylvania turnpikes, my house might be convenient. We can provide anything from a bathroom break to overnight parking for large RVs. I've got a guest bedroom, couches, recliners, camping mattresses, goodly amounts of floor space, a huge screen porch lots of space for pitching tents, should that be your desire. (There are also multiple sewing machines ironing boards for last minute construction blitzes! grin) If anyone is passing through think you might be ready for a meal break or sleep break in my vicinity, by all means get hold of me! Fist an apology if this is too far off topic, but I just HAD to comment about my first Costume Con... My WOW circuit is worn-out and completely off-line from being used so much. My brain is filled with wonderfull memories of outfits that look like they stepped out of a time machine, helpfull people who put up with a thousand questions about their dress, people who let me examine VERY up close the seams and details, and all of the other helpfull people. I am sooo glad I went this year. Unfortunately due to finances I will have to wait till it is in/ near NJ again. Hello to all who were there!! My favorite memory of hall costuming. Kayta Barrows was a close friend of mine. She often judged something at . . . Oh gosh. Forgot the Con name! Memorial Day in San Jose: is that SiliCon? Kayta had been costuming longer than me, and often helped me fit my muslins, as I helped her fit hers. About l995 or so, Kayta was to be judging hall costumes. She had not (for once!) helped me fit my latest costume, an 1895 bicycling outfit with convertible skirt. Hat with matched taxidermied duck wings (a project we had worked on, but hadn't discussed uses for). Canvas leggins with shoebuttons. Hatpin I'd made myself. I decided to wear the ensemble as a hall costume and surprise her. (its first outing: it also went to Costume Con that year) I got a small piece of white silk which fit a large brooch, and inscribed it with the words Fabric time machine. Kayta spotted me from far down the hall. I knew I had her when she doubled over with laughter. == Marjorie On Jan 31, 2011, at 11:00 PM, Robin Netherton wrote: Catching up on stacked-up e-mail... For the person who wondered about whether it was OK to not wear a costume: It's not required at all. I've tried to dress up for the Friday social because it's fun, but I haven't worn hall costumes, mostly because I typically don't have the time or luggage space to deal with anything beyond what I'm wearing for my lectures. There's plenty to do and see. If you love costume, you won't be bored or feel out of place. You will very likely meet people with similar interests. When you see people in the hall wearing costumes you like, don't hesitate to stop them to give a compliment, or ask about how something was done. Nearly always, they'll want to tell you all about it. Your registration allows you to do anything and everything! Ok, you are on your own for sleeping (commute, hotel room...) and in general for food, although the 'con suite'/hospitality room usually has munchies of various things and sometimes actual food (depending on who's running it and the budget). your badge lets you into panels, workshops (check if there's any materials fee, sometimes there is. might be like.. $10 or so), con suite, all stage activities (SF/F masquerade, Historic masquerade, single pattern contest, future fashion show..), any exhibit room they have and the dealers room where you can shop for neat stuff. There is usually a Friday Night social (yes, that's included), and there are often day trips. Basically, anything going on at the convention, you're registration includes! they are lots of fun. -Judy Mitchell (I'll be there!) I realize that Costume Con is run entirely by volunteers, but, at the only one I attended, I found the education sessions to be distinctly sub-par. When I told a costumer friend about that later, she said, Well, you don't go to Costume Con for the education, you go for the masquerades. I was only able to attend the historical masquerade, and it was very good--I was, indeed, impressed with the tech crew. And I found the marketplace excellent. Being a panelist at a Costume Con doesn't mean that anyone will think you are an expert, only that you may have a different perspective on t he topic than the costumer sitting next to you. At my first CC, I Was on one panel, it was bit intimidiating ofr me (and I didn't even KNOW anyoneyet!) but the moderator made sure to give me a bit of time to explain how I did things so at least I felt I added a voice to the topic. Please do come; you don't have to be a panelist, but it is just SO WONDERFUL to be with a large group of like-minded people who understand what you love to do and why you do it. I encourage people to go to Costume-Con regardless of your level of costuming experience. I have been to two CC and find the people SO friendly. They love to talk about their costumes and how they made them. Last year I did meet more h-costumers than the one at Baltimore. The CCs seem to take on the personality of the location. Both years were so different. I do like when the event is all on one floor of the hotel...more people seem to get to mingle. Last year the topic came up on h-costume about newbies worried that they didn't have a costume to wear. I haven't worn a costume either year and didn't feel bad and no one treated me differently. I am there as press and photographing, so it is not practical for me to wear a costume. When Robin first met me at CC, I was laying in the floor photographing costume details. One of the things that I really enjoy about CC is meeting costumers of all ages. Last year we had a blast photographing a little girl in an 18th Century costume. She stole our hearts! We met some mothers who designed costumes for their children. It was a chance for them to brag about their creations...child and costume. Looking forward to seeing everyone! I now have 48 costumes with 132 views online from Costume-Con. I am putting the hall costumes online first. There are 4 index pages for the costumes. Start at: http://www.costumegallery.com/CostumeCon27/hall1.htm . The photos are in a free access area. I am using a new software to me that you can zoom in close to the photos. Some photos get grainy when you zoom in too much. But keep in mind that when you zoom in, it does take a split second for the image to focus. I still have a lot more photos to put online. If you see your photo online, let me know and I will email you a copy of the photo. Also, anyone who attended to Costume-Con get a free subscription of our Library until June 1. I didn't have to take your photo for you to get the free access special. Just email me privately. I will be taking a break from putting Costume-Con photos online this weekend. I am heading back to Baltimore, MD for Balticon, http://www.balticon.org/ . I will be photographing costumes again, just like at Costume-Con. Is anyone else on the email list going to Balticon? [h-cost] Costume-Con 26 FB Tours info
Have you been asking yourself Why should I go to San Jose for Costume-Con? Well, you should go to San Jose because Costume-Con is there. While you're in San Jose, though, the Bay Area beckons with unique opportunities for fun. If you're in to decadent food and beverage, we've definitely got you covered. Come out a day early. Check in to our hotel on Wednesday night, because on Thursday morning (4/24) chocolate awaits! It's about an hour's trip to Berkeley, but it's worth it. Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker is a first-tier chocolate manufacturer, starting with the raw beans and controlling every step in the process of making the best small-batch chocolate in the country. After the tour, we'll take lunch at Café Cacao, right in the Scharffen Berger factory. From lunch we'll continue the short jaunt from Scharffen Berger to St. George Spirits, a cradle of craft-distilling in the US. Located at the northwest end of Naval Air Station Alameda (a site familiar to the fans of Mythbusters) in an old hangar, St. George Spirits is classic Schwartzwald, Germany transplanted to California. Under the St. George name, Jörg, Lance and their crew distill eaux de vie, liqueuers and a superb single-malt whisky. Their recent Absinthe release rocked the spirits world. They're also well-known for distilling the Hangar One series of flavored vodkas. In a partnership with John Scharffenberger, they produce Qi tea liqueurs and Essence of Cacao perfume. Taste carefully. If a chocolate maker and a distiller aren't enough, you'll have to wait until Tuesday (4/29). They're more than enough for any single day. If you stay until Tuesday, you can ensure your California visit is complete. Our Tuesday food beverage tour is wine tasting. Forget Napa and Sonoma, though; they're a long drive and expensive to boot. Much closer to San Jose is the Livermore Valley, home to Lawrence Livermore Labs and the oldest wine-growing region in California. Livermore is still a town of boutique wineries where 5000 cases a year is big production and folks squander their retirement making small amounts of great wine. Bent Creek Winery is a great example of this, run by best friends who retired from the Livermore School district, and wizards with Syrah. Cedar Mountain Winery has been making wine a bit longer, and this pair of retired physicists from Lawrence Livermore Lab are well-known for their award winning Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Finally, it wouldn't be Livermore without someone who retired from the wine business to run a winery, and Thomas Coyne Winery, housed in the oldest standing winery in California, has made a name working with ugly-duckling grapes like Malbec, Petit Verdot and Mourvédre. We'll be stopping at all three, and (like almost every day in almost every tasting room in Livermore) the wine makers will be present. Please, plan to stay the extra days and enjoy the region. As the convention approaches, we'll be working out the logistics of these trips. Costume-Con 26 Historical Masquerade Call for Entries The Costume-Con 26 Historical Masquerade recognizes creativity, scholarship, stage presentation, and workmanship skills in the context of historical clothing. It celebrates the history of costume, including all cultures, periods, and types of dress. Historical costume is costume based on clothing that was worn or could have been worn somewhere in the past of this world. The Historical Masquerade will take place on Sunday, April 27th, 2008. To enter the CC26 Historical you must be a member of CC26, as must all models you may plan to use. Hey, all. We are finally ready for individual photo sales. As we mentioned our photographer, Kerry Gilley took about 1300 photos at CC. He set up an account, but since he only has a dial-up connection was having a terrible time trying to upload the photos. He asked me to try and we got them up. It did take some time, especially with Marcon intervening. But I finished getting them all uploaded last night. To order photos go to: www.costumecon25.smugmug.com 4x6 photos are, I believe, 19 cents each. Postage is added, of course. (Other sizes are available for additional cost.) The site is set up with Galleries. The galleries are: F/SF Masquerade Future Fashion Show Historical Masquerade Doll Competition Shoe Competition Mousequerade Friday Night Social Friday Hall Costumes Saturday Hall Costumes Sunday Hall Costumes I tried this with IE, Firefox and Netscape. IE and Firefox work great. While I could see the home page with Netscape, if I went into any of the galleries none of the photos were visible. This may be my Netscape version since I don't use it much and haven't updated it for quite a while. Now I have a favor to ask everyone. While we have pretty complete information for the competitions, we don't for the Social and the Hall Costumes. So, we would like to ask everyone to look at the photos and let us know who folks are and what their costumes are titled. Even if we recognize you (and we do recognize a lot of you) we would like the titles of your costumes as well. So if you can identify a photo by gallery and page (and which photo on the page) We'd love it. Please don't clog up the bandwidth on the list(s). I have no good pictures of either of us in these outfits, and it seems we were off the radar for everyone so far who has posted pictures from the con. Of course, we were tucked away in the lecture room on Saturday, and I changed out of costume at lunchtime. --Robin ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
[h-cost] Costume-Con: This weekend!
I'm packing up now and will be taking off for Costume-Con in the morning. Of course, it's just a half-hour drive for me, so I figure I'm leaving later than a lot of other people! Who will be there tomorrow? I expect I will be looking at the exhibits and dealers and hanging out in hospitality during the afternoon, maybe taking in a panel or two, and will be at the Friday evening social at least long enough to scope out the costumes. I will be easy to spot; for both afternoon and evening I will be wearing a very silly version of my Gothic fitted dress suitable only for Costume-Con (consider it an in-joke for the historical costumers), and will be accompanied by a tall long-haired gentleman in a coordinating outfit. If anyone from h-cost sees me, please introduce yourself! A reminder to those who have a one-day membership for Saturday, or for that matter anyone else in the neighborhood: Friday attendance is FREE (except for the social, which will cost $5 if you go to that). So if you're in town, come on over for the afternoon and get the chance to cruise the site and people-watch. (If you're going to my lectures on Saturday, you won't have much time to check out the dealers, etc. so Friday would be a good day for that.) One-day members: I believe you should also be able to pick up your Saturday membership materials on Friday, saving you valuable time in the brief period between when the registration desk opens at 9am Saturday and my lectures begin at ... um ... 9am Saturday. OK, I'll start a little late to allow for the one-day-trippers to get their paperwork and badges! People not attending the con as members may also come for the big competition stage shows (the masquerades) on Saturday night (f/sf) and Sunday night (historical), for $5 at the door. Well worth seeing. Info here: http://www.cc25.net/start.htm Remember that if you're registering at the door, bring a checkbook or cash. And yes, there's still room in my Saturday lectures for last-minute attendees. http://www.cc25.net/netherton.htm Forward at will... --Robin ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] Costume-Con -- last chance for advance registration
Robin Netherton wrote: Costume-Con will be taking online/advance registration till Saturday, March 17 -- that is, two days from now. After that, you have to pay at the door. ... If you're planning to pay at the door and still to come to my lectures, drop me a note and I'll see if the organizers can take that into account. I'd like to point out that if you're planning to pay at the door, they will not accept credit cards at that time. You'll need cash. I'll look forward to seeing you there! And in case anyone has been trying to reach me: I am offline and out of commission, thanks to power outages here in St. Louis. We have been without power in our home since Saturday; my husband, kids, and I have been staying with relatives. I am just now able to check into the list on a borrowed computer, via an alternate box, but I don't have access to my usual e-mail. I am not looking forward to the quantity of mail I will have to sort through once we do get back home ... not to mention the laundry, and the state of the refrigerator and freezer. At least I can now read the list, and I am reachable at this box for now. --Robin Robin Netherton This is my webmail box. [h-cost] Costume-Con 25 Lecture Announcement
FYI: Costume-Con 25 is pleased to announce a special lecture track on Western European clothing of the Middle Ages, to be held on Saturday only, March 31, 2007. Robin Netherton is co-editor of the academic journal Medieval Clothing and Textiles. Founders of the study group DISTAFF, she and co-editor Dr. Gale Owen-Crocker organize tracks of sessions on medieval dress and textiles each year at the International Congresses on Medieval Studies. Ms. Netherton has lectured to sold-out houses in such cities as Boston, Seattle, Philadelphia, Denver, Orlando, Portland, and San Jose. She also spoke at CC21 in Chicago, in 2003. This special all-day program track will begin the morning with her well-known pair of talks on The Gothic Fitted Dress (a medieval fashion known to many modern costumers as the cotehardie) and The Greenland Gored Gown (the style often called the 10-gore dress). Two to 3 more lectures will follow a lunch break (subjects to be announced in the near future). The lecture series is open to all members of Costume-Con 25, however, you are strongly advised to reserve your seat in advance, as seating will be limited. You should indicate your wish to have your name on the list at the time you register. If you are already registered, just drop us a line at mailto:slcg%40email.com[EMAIL PROTECTED] If you are only interested in attending Ms. Netherton's lectures, you may purchase a one-day membership ($50, available on-line), which also gives you access to all the activities of the convention that day. You should be aware that if you choose to wait to purchase a one-day membership at the door, we cannot guarantee that seats will still be available for the lectures.
