Re: [Haifux] problem configuring printer via network

Is the guest user on your roomate's computer is enabled (bad
practice, but works for printing)? Who can print (from the Windows
point of view) to this printer - security and all?

the printer is HP printer/scanner 1200 (or hppsc120) it's configured as
"shared" on the XP. I tried mandrake's auto detect unsuccessfuly,
I tried webmin unsuccessfuly

I call it partial success since the rest told me they're not recognizing
the printer.
I have no background in networking so please explain in simple and

2004-12-02 Thread Orna Agmon
Next Monday (6/12/2004), 18:30, the Haifa Linux Club will once
again meet to hear Ami Chayun (from beyondsecurity) talk about:

Adventure in pixie land
Abstract:

In this lecture we will build step-by-step a PXE (network boot) loaded
skeleton linux system. This will provide an example on how to build Linux
(almost) from scratch and provide an x-ray of a typical initrd.
Applications? Diskless linux and music player machine in the shower are
just two...

Links:
PXE is a boring protocol but here is the spec (Not for the faint of
heart): ftp://download.intel.com/labs/manage/wfm/download/pxespec.pdf
The same info comes in a nice slide show:
http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/99mar/slides/remboot-agenda-99mar/sld009.htm
What is initrd - man 4 initrd
http://www.rt.com/man/initrd.4.html
and a nice summary
http://www.tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Filesystem-Hierarchy/html/initrd.html

Slides will hopefully be available before the lecture, but haifux's site
is expected to be down for the week-end.

We meet in the Technion, Taub 3. See http://www.haifux.org.org/where/html
for arrival details.

Attendance is free, and you are all invited!

We are always looking for interesting lecture ideas, and we have
already begun scheduling the 2005 season!

a-ha! this last one has a future. did you define a domain on the machine
which shares the printer? or a workgroup?

you might need to supply the domain or workgroup name as part of the
user-name when doing the login (i.e. in the printer configuration). try
something like domain\\user (or workgroup\\user) - note the double
backslash.
