haifux has a ring to it that kinda makes it obvious what it's about. it's
also become known over the years in the technion CS faculty.

i think it's a better idea to keep it

Well, before renaming Haifux to Haifos or HaiFOSS or HaiFree (because you may
 discuss open/free content too)

No. FOSS, as we all know, fails to state that we're talking about
Free (*Libre*) OSS, and may confuse people to thing we're talking about
freebies. Thus the name should be HaiFLOSS. And the homepage should be
green.

Gah, this thread should have been a week ago. Like

This idea was suggested to get sponsorship by Colgate or some other
floss company. However we could not have loss in the name, we did not
lose yet in the battle of FOSS vs. Wrapware.

Hence, I suggest HaiFWIN, or Haifin, the place in haifa where people
with fins may meet and discuss their penguins.

Well, before renaming Haifux to Haifos or HaiFOSS or HaiFree (because you may
discuss open/free content too) or whatever, I should note that I'm not
absolutely sure renaming the Tel Aviv club to TelFOSS was a good idea. Some
drawbacks to note is that there are still the logistics of the name change,
and the fact that it fragments the existing referrals (in web searches, on
correspondence, etc.) and that focusing on Linux is more concrete and less
presumptious than The Haifa Open Source Club.

Oh well. Let the flames begin!? ;-)

Re: [Haifux] Haifos?

2010-04-07 Thread Orr Dunkelman
Dotan shalom,

Officially we are the haifa linux club, but at the same time, as
you've noted we are very much about FOSS as well.

I prefer to leave the name haifux which is a sort of a trademark, even
if we are actually more than just a Linux club.
The reason is that people inside the Israeli FOSS/Linux community know
what haifux is, while people outside do not, and these people may be
confused by the emergence of haifos.

Consider this as a QWERTY reminder of the history of haifux.

Best regards,
