[ha-Safran]: New Book: The Beast that Crouches at the Door

2007-10-30 Thread Stuart Schnee
ASKING THE REAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BIBLE

New book offers non-conventional answers to the obvious questions

people take for granted or fail to ask about the stories in the book of
Genesis

The lessons and meanings of the language of the Torah are often maddeningly
elusive. Everyone knows the story of Adam and Eve, of Cain and Abel -- yet
do we really hear what they these stories are telling us.

A lot of the stories of the Bible strike adult ears as fairy tale
Rabbi Fohrman explains. For example, a talking snake and a magic apple in a
special garden with devastating results. How does one break through and find
the meaning? How do these stories speak to adults and children?

Rabbi Fohrman, in his monumental work, The Beast That Crouches At
The Door: Adam and Eve, Cain Abel, and Beyond, suggests that a key to
understanding these and many other stories in the Bible lies in God's
enigmatic speech to Cain. In this speech, God alludes to humanity's
potential for evil as a beast that crouches at the door. Strangely, though,
the beast is not portrayed as the fearsome enemy we might assume it to be.
Cain is encouraged to maintain a relationship with the beast, even as he is
cautioned to beware its fearsome power.

What, really, is the nature of this beast, and how are we meant to relate to
it? This question lies at the core of Rabbi Fohrman's startlingly original
exploration of the stories in Genesis.

About the Author

Rabbi David Fohrman received his rabbinical and biblical training at Ner
Israel Rabbinical College in Baltimore, Maryland. He is Resident Scholar in
the Hoffberger Foundation for Torah Studies and adjunct professor at Johns
Hopkins University. Rabbi Fohrman has dedicated his life to teaching Bible
classes and is an editor of the ArtScroll Schottenstein Edition of the
Talmud.

[ha-Safran]: Sephardic and Ashkenazi Immigration to the United States

2007-10-30 Thread Ben Pastcan
Shalom my fellow colleagues,

I am wondering if any of you know of any comprehensive
books that compare the experiences of the Sephardic Jews who came
here to the United States in 1654 to how the Ashkenazi Jews came here
later during their first wave of immigration. I am already familiar
with the immigration that took place during the 1880's for Ashkenazi
Jews (because of the records from my great-grandfather and from
reading parts of World of Our Fathers). I would appreciate any
possible sources you could lead me to or any books that explain in
detail the differences between what Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews
experienced in America when they arrived here. I need some ideas or
references on this preferably before Friday.

Thank you so much,

Re: [ha-Safran] statistics on Jewish book publishing in US

2007-10-30 Thread Andrea Rapp
Jewish Book World has said that it reviews between 600-700 books
anually, and more than 400 new titles are submitted each year as
candidates for the National Jewish Book Awards.
I, too, have been looking for statistics on Jewish book
publishing, and I think I've posted requests on hasafran.
Can anyone direct me to a list Moment Magazine once printed of the
bestselling Jewish books of all time, and/or a source of statistics
for the number of copies sold of books like Wiesel's NIGHT or other
popular Jewish writers, such as Faye Kellerman?
I came across a note about Lamm's Jewish Way in Death and
Mourning which says it sold 320,000 copies and is one of the top
sellers in Judaica, which I found very surprising... I would like
information on these sorts of things and also about trends in the industry.

Dear Galit,

If you go to this Jewish Women's Archive web page,
http://jwa.org/teach/golearn/nov06/ , you will find our essay called,
Jewish diversity and innovation: The view from the kitchen. The essay
discusses how our traditional Jewish foods reflect the diversity and
travels of Jews. Moreover, Jewish recipes tell a story about the
interactions we've had with the cultural groups that have lived near us
throughout history. This essay is part of our Go Learn Primary

Please let us know if it is useful to you.

It sounds like a fun program. Good luck.

New book by Boston area author about religion and friendship

2007-10-30 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

Below is an announcement by a Boston area author and his NY area
co-author who will at my synagogue's book fair this year. I thought
it might be of interest to you. Here's their
blog: http://www.thefaithbetweenus.com/http://www.thefaithbetweenus.com/

Ann Abrams, Librarian
Temple Israel, Boston

FROM AUTHOR PETER BEBERGAL:

My book, The Faith Between Us, co-authored with Scott Korb, with a
foreword by Freakonomics author Stephen J. Dubner, is available now
from Bloomsbury. The book tells two distinct but interrelated
religious stories both towards and away from faith. Filled with
stories of my struggles with Judaism and Scott's Catholic religious
struggles, Faith tells the story of a faithful friendship above and
beyond tradition, and even belief. (Please some advance reviews below.)

We'd love to send a copy of the book to your library for you to read
and pass around, and if you think you might like to have a book
discussion when Faith comes out in the fall, or possibly plan an
event with us, we'd be delighted.

Best wishes and thanks for your consideration. I hope to hear from you.

Peter Bebergal

  617-864-8393

http://www.amazon.com/Faith-Between-Us-Catholic-Meaning/dp/1596911433The
Faith Between Us: A Jew and a Catholic Search for the Meaning of God

Publishers Weekly starred review:

What's the saying? Never discuss sex, God or politics if you want to
keep your friends? In this particular case, the questions of faith
and God are actually what brought Bebergal and Korb together,
initially through a correspondence related to their writings for
various online magazines. Faith was not something either particularly
discussed with their other friends, even though both hold advanced
degrees in religion. Like a conversation that continues all night
into the early light of dawn, this collection of stories is filled
with the deepest of personal feelings and confessions as well as the
mundane details of everyday life. The formatthe telling of a story
by one, followed by a reflective epilogue by the otherhighlights not
only the seamlessness of their dialogue, but the depth of their
friendship and understanding of each other. No topic is taboo; amid
their questioning of faith and God come tales of addiction, neuroses
and ineptitude. These thirty-somethings are as diverse as their
upbringings, yet between them they represent a little bit of all of
us in this thoughtful, engaging debate about the virtues of faith and
the existence of God.

A magical conceit, a true dialogue between friends on a subject
that dearly needs to be talked about.

-- Stephen J. Dubner, coauthor of Freakonomics

When was the last time two men sat down and wrote about their friendship?

This is a beautiful book - frank, open, searching. It is, to be sure,
a 'religious' book, but its great virtue is that it erases the
quotation marks around that word and makes religious insight and
longing seem, like friendship, a natural part of the world.

-- Jonathan Rosen, author of Joy Comes in the Morning

This is the book for this moment. In an era of rigid (and false)
dichotomies -- when one is told to be either a blind believer or a
dogmatic atheist -- Bebergal and Korb offer a third way, the path of
respect, of common sense, of dialogue rather than doctrine. There
are fewer hot topics today than religion, and this book provides an
accessible, heartfelt, compelling, and ultimately inspiring message
that will speak to many of us, religionists and secularists alike.

--Niles Elliot Goldstein, author of Gonzo Judaism and founding
rabbi of the New Shul in Manhattan

Dear helpful friends-

We received a grant to purchase the new CD-ROM Jewish Women: A

JPS. Unfortunately, we discovered, upon receipt, that the product
says it is not caompatible with some computers that run on Intel

get the product to run on any of them.

Have any of you had this problem? Any suggestions? (The product
costs of $200, and we received grant money to buy it. I have to
figure out how to make it work!)

Thanks in advance for any and all guidance.
