Subject: NEW! Jewish Library Advocacy Kit

  NEWS FLASH!!!

AJL has created a Jewish Library Advocacy Kit to assist libraries as they
educate their communities about the value of their services. The kit includes
materials that can simply be handed to administrators, as well as documents to
be adapted and recrafted for each library's individual situation.

Find the Jewish Library Advocacy Kit on the AJL website at
www.jewishlibraries.org in the Resources section. It is a downloadable PDF
document. Feel free to use the ideas and information when creating advocacy
documents of your own, tailored to your individual situation.

The pdf may also be found here:
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/main/Portals/0/AJL_Assets/documents/resources/advocacy/AJLadvocacyKit.pdf

We welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement!

[ha-Safran] Training and review for creating original RDA records for resources in Hebrew script (PCC BIBCO and Hebaica NACO Funnel members)

2013-04-10 Thread Heidi G Lerner

Please excuse cross-posting:

To: Catalogers of Hebraica materials whose institutions are in PCC BIBCO and/or
who participate in the Hebraica NACO Funnel

Subject: Training and review for creating original RDA records for resources in
Hebrew script*

Creating an original bibliographic record for a resource in Hebrew script
presents an array of challenges, and employs special rules and practices.
Issues encountered while describing resources in Hebrew script under AACR2
exist also under RDA.

Standard BIBCO training materials cover RDA, but Hebraica catalogers will
benefit from additional training and review.   The PCC hopes that offering a
unified approach for such training and review will increase the availability of
high-quality records cataloged according to RDA.

Pre-requisites for RDA training for Hebrew script:

1.   Membership in PCC BIBCO and/or the Hebraica NACO Funnel

2.   RDA NACO training to reach independence

3.   Completion of BIBCO RDA “ Bridge ” training, using online LC RDA
descriptive cataloging Modules 1-4, and the online BIBCO RDA Webinars 1-4 (live
or recorded)

Methods:

1.   Trainers will provide initial guidelines for Hebraica cataloging in RDA.

2.   Participants will follow the PCC BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) for textual
monographs ( http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/scs/documents/PCC-RDA-BSR.pdf ).

3.   Participants will submit records and receive comments from reviewers.

*Note:   Authentication of bibliographic records with official BIBCO coding
“042 pcc” will be used only by catalogers in BIBCO institutions, although all
participants in this training will be able to create RDA bibliographic records.
Staff at LC and other institutions are hopeful that this training program for
Hebraica RDA will expand into a BIBCO Hebraica Funnel.

To participating in this training program or for more information, please
email:

·     Heidi G. Lerner, Coordinator, NACO Hebraica Funnel; RDA PCC/BIBCO
record reviewer, Stanford University Libraries (ler...@stanford.edu)

·     With a copy to:   Carolyn Sturtevant, BIBCO Coordinator, Library of
Congress (e-mail: c...@loc.gov)

[ha-Safran] organizing a special library

2013-04-10 Thread Tsipi Wexler
I volunteer at Casa Shalom - Institute for Marrano (Anusim) Studies
http://casa-shalom.com/content/view/30/2/
The collection is organized by geographical area ie Spain with its
corresponding history, fiction, personal accounts, genealogy, etc. Our
geographical areas include anywhere that we have records of crypto-Jews -
Mediterranean, Europe, South America
Now that the library is part of Netanya Academic College, the collection
needs to be catalogued in Dewey. Please send me suggestions of how to
organize the collection. The Dewey nos.don't seem to correspond to the way
we present the collection.

Thanks,
Tsipi

Re: [ha-Safran] organizing a special library

2013-04-10 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
It seems most logical to talk to the librarians at Netanya Academic College. Even within one university there can be multiple classifications. The University of Illinois-Chicago uses LCC, while the Urbana campus uses Dewey. Within one library one may use one classification for books and another for non-print.Your question has many parts that need to be discussed locally. Classification is only one part of the cataloging and organization of a library and its collections. You may need an expert consultation to figure out the right questions before you can pursue the answers.DS-Original Message-

[ha-Safran] The Sages Of Our Tradition: Interpreters Of The Tanakh And Talmud

2013-04-10 Thread ira hollinger

New Publication-Unique Book. No other book like this in English

Title: The Sages Of Our Tradition: Interpreters Of The Tanakh And Talmud

Author: Dr. Cyril Mazansky

Implicit in the title of this book is the concept of Chachmei HaMesorah,
Sages of the Tradition. These Sages are the Rabbis from the days of
the Mishnah through our own

generation who interpreted and transmitted the Written and Oral Torah.

Dr. Cyril Mazansky has created a comprehensive English language
biography of the more prominent of these great Sages and presents
categories and classifications of their works using a sraightforward
approach to clearly present this wealth of data.

This information provides the general reader and student with a
comprehensive reference book, in English, on the great scholars and
religious authors of the Biblical and Talmudic

interpretive tradition throughout the centuries.

Hard Cover, 7x10in, 504 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1936778607
