Mss. Hamburg and Ritzenthaler described the enormous task that lay before them and others at the National Archives in the effort to preserve what came to be called the Iraqi Jewish Archive. Fast forward ten years and that effort has now come full circle. AJL-NYMA is thrilled to have Dina Herbert of the National Archives speak about her work as Project Librarian for the Iraqi Jewish Archive. Dr. Johanna Spector (1915-2008) was a professor of ethnomusicology at The Jewish Theological Seminary and a world-renowned scholar in that field, an author of books and articles, and a producer of documentary films. The team of archivists working on the Johanna Spector Archive housed at JTS Library will discuss this rich archive which includes material in the fields of ethnography, history, anthropology and music from the nearly extinct Jewish communities of India, Yemen, Azerbaijan, Egypt and Armenia, and the Samaritan people. __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran

[ha-Safran] new Yiddish book: Mame-loshn by Nahum Stutchkoff
Dear Safranim, I am pleased to announce the publication of a brand-new Yiddish collection: Mame-loshn by Nahum Stutchkoff (1893-1965). The book was edited by Alec (Leizer) Burko, with an introduction by Dr. Chava Lapin. I also contributed substantially to the bibliography. The book is published in cooperation with the Forverts (Jewish Daily Forward), former owner of WEVD radio, where the original episodes of Mame-loshn were broadcast. Mame-loshncontains episodes from Nahum Stutchkoff's radio program with the same name, where he explained Yiddish expressions and idioms. The source materials for the book come from typescripts in the Nahum Stutchkoff collection in the Dorot Jewish Division, New York Public Library. Known as a linguist and the author of the monumental thesaurus, Der oytser fun der yidisher shprakh, Stutchkoff was also a prolific and beloved radio personality, playwright, director, and actor. The book is 402 pages and costs $15. You can buy it at: http://www.amazon.com/Mame-loshn-Yiddish-Edition-Nahum-Stutchkoff/dp/1496045548 Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Re: [ha-Safran] Library-related chessed activities?
Hi Susan, Two chesed activities come to mind that may applicable. The first is the African Library Project http://www.africanlibraryproject.org/. Several years ago I worked with a group of students who wanted to do a book drive. Using the structure and guidelines provided by the Africa Library Project, we gathered 1,000 books, raised $500 and created a library in a small community center in Africa. The project was very rewarding for the students. The second is tutoring. The 8th grade students at our school are trained by the Jewish Coalition for Literacy, a local group that matches trained reading tutors with schools. After their training they serve as reading tutors once a week for 8 weeks in a local second grade classroom. Our students select age appropriate books to read with the students from our library.
