[ha-Safran] Conference
Thank you to Rachel, Marcie, and all those who made this conference happen in such a short time frame. It was wonderful - I was sad when it was over. The flexibility shown in adding the late afternoon virtual hospitality suites gave many of us an opportunity to talk to other librarians dealing with the same issues, particularly regarding COVID. I hope that the conference will be able to take place here in Chicago next year, but the online format might be a way to have some conferences in the future that allow more people to attend at a reasonable price. [ha-Safran] New Online Exhibition: The Jewish Home: Dwelling on the Domestic, the Familial, and the Lived-In
Everyone - The Fellows at the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, in partnership with the Penn Libraries, have just launched their 2019-20 fellowship year web exhibition entitled: "The Jewish Home: Dwelling on the Domestic, the Familial, and the Lived-In." To view the exhibition go to: https://www.library.upenn.edu/collections/online-exhibits/jewish-home?tab=exhibit . This exhibition highlights examples of the formative and intimate of contexts of Jewish homes, houses and households, drawing from texts in the Penn Libraries' collections and from around the world. The contributors interpret Jewish domestic culture, architecture, clothing, landscape, and material evidence through the lenses of archaeological, anthropological, historical, legal, literary, and visual research. Among the topics discussed are Jewish domestic labor, home and homeland, the cosmopolitan home, ghettoized homes, traumatized homes, refugee homes, Soviet Shtetl homes, symbolic homes, embodied homes, health and hygiene, affordable housing, as well as homelessness within the framework of broad social and political contexts. Also treated are Jewish costume and clothing, Jewish domestic customs, including lighting Sabbath candles and inscribing marriage contracts, as well as the homes and hands through which Jewish books have passed. The periods of time covered span the ancient Near Eastern archeological sites of home, the ancient rabbinic home as a worksite, Fatamid Egyptian Jewish home interiors, early modern Jewish households of masters and enslaved people; modern representations of Jewish notions of home and office in the visual arts, including photography and engraving, and studies that approach the home as part of the built environment and design of local neighborhoods. [ha-Safran] AJL conference 2020
I’d like to add my thanks for the wonderful conference! Kudos to all involved- and all who participated - in AJL Conference 2020. All of you who were instrumental in setting up this first time ever Zoom conference actually managed to turn a potential wash out into a positive event by making It available to not only those who would’ve attended but also to many of us who would not have been able to join in person due to financial, travel, or scheduling constraints. I did miss the face to face contact ( Zoom is still not exactly that personal) but I so appreciated the ability to listen and learn from all of you- Particularly the New Jewish Fiction Session, the discussion of On Division, the interview with Goldie Goldbloom, the book club facilitator sessions, the advocacy session— and all the sessions/ Tea room/ breakouts geared towards SSCPL. Thank you for all the time, the effort, the work you put in, and for —safely —educating us all!Bruchie WeinsteinLibrarianMagen David Yeshivah HSBrooklyn __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.osu.edu https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran
Re: [ha-Safran] Wonderful conference
Well said, Shaindy! I don't think I've posted yet to express my appreciation for this amazing conference. It was a stellar learning experience under any circumstances, but considering that it had to be adapted from face-to-face to virtual in a short amount of time -- wow! As others have said, the silver lining is that the online format made the conference accessible to many who would not have been able to attend in person. This is huge, folks. Increased participation, camaraderie, and community! And the opportunity to review recordings and to watch ones that we missed means that we get the full benefit of the sessions! Kol hakavod to the organizers, speakers, and participants (check out the session chats!) who made this such a memorable experience! I would like to add my gratitude and congratulations to all those who worked tirelessly to make the AJL 2020 a success: the conference organizing and program committees, the AV club, the AJL leadership, our sponsors, and of course all the presenters who shared their work. It was great to see that this virtual conference enabled new possibilities for community building and engaging members in new ways. I am looking forward to staying connected throughout the year.
