[ha-Safran] anti-Semitism at Sofia University

2020-11-16 Thread Anne Knafl via Hasafran
Hi All,
Passing on information about a situation at Sofia University in Bulgaria,
Anne

"An open letter to anyone with working relationships to Sofia University, The
Sofia University of National and World Economy, Foundation for European
Progressive Studies Scientific Council, about the hate speech and promotion of
racism and ethnic hatred in the lectures of Prof. M. Mirchev in his course
"Social work with ETHNO groups"

The Student Society for Equality at Sofia University is requesting
international support in strongly opposing the promotion, association or
employment of Prof. M. Mirchev based on the ongoing lecture series "Social work
with ETHNO groups" at Sofia University. The program of the course and the
lectures held so far are filled with racist, misogynist, xenophobic and
anti-Semitic content, which violates the principles on which university
education is built."

[ha-Safran] "Marcel Proust, Zionist" (event on November 18)

News about this event arrived in my inbox today via one of my
France-focused newsletters. Seemed likely to interest this community/

November 18, 2020: 1:00 PM–2:00 PMA live virtual transatlantic event

Panel Discussion:
Marcel Proust, Zionist

A conversation with Antoine Compagnon and Elisabeth Ladenson

*To sign up for this virtual conversation, click here
.*

Antoine Compagnon talks with Elisabeth Ladenson about his new research on
the reception of Marcel Proust's novel, *In Search of Lost Time*, by the
French Jewish community in the 1920s. Proust has sometimes been
characterized as anti-semitic, and his treatment of characters such as
Swann, Nissim Bernard or Rachel shock today's sensibilities. In Sodom and
Gomorra he equates Jews with homosexuals, a portrayal some commentators
view as a form of dual self-hatred. But many young Zionists appreciated
Proust in the 1920s and were not put off by his Jewish characters. Does it
make sense to qualify him as anti-semitic, applying today's standards
retroactively? How did Jewish readers respond to his writing at the time,
and why?

*Antoine Compagnon*, also a professor at the Collège de France in Paris, is
the Blanche W. Knopf Professor of French and Comparative Literature.
*Elisabeth Ladenson* is Professor of French and Comparative Literature and
General Editor of Romanic Review.

Check out Professor Compagnon's weekly series about "Proust Zionist
"
on the website of the Collège de France.

This event is organized by the Maison Française. It is co-sponsored by the
Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies, IRCPL, Department of English and
Comparative Literature at Columbia University. This event is made possible
with the support of the Knapp Family Foundation.
