[ha-Safran] Photos of the Jerusalem Book Fair

2023-06-14 Thread Jacob Richman via Hasafran
Hi Everyone!

Today, I went to the Jerusalem Book Fair at the First Station
(the original train station in Jerusalem).
There was a good turnout for the first day of the book fair.
After 38 years in Israel, I still get a kick out of seeing the covers
of English books I read when I was a kid but with Hebrew titles and text.
You can see some examples in the photos I took today.
The photos are posted at:
jr.co.il/jerusalem/2023/jer668.htm

Enjoy and please share. Thank You!

Have a good night,
Jacob

[ha-Safran] Announcing the 2022 Bibliography and Reference awards

2023-06-14 Thread Eitan Lev Kensky via Hasafran
Dear Colleagues -

On behalf of the committee, it is my great honor to announce the winners of
this year's Reference and Bibliography Awards.

Bibliography award: Koerner, András. Early Jewish Cookbooks: Essays on
Hungarian Jewish Gastronomical History. Budapest; New York: CEU Press, 2022.

Reference award: Stein, Sarah Abrevaya, and Aomar Boum. Wartime North Africa: A
Documentary History, 1934–1950. Stanford, California: Stanford University
Press, 2022.

This year’s awardees exemplify AJL’s mission to foster and promote access to
information, learning, teaching, and research. The awardees will be honored at
a virtual event this fall.

In Early Jewish Cookbooks, András Koerner continues his explorations of Jewish
cookbooks in Hungary, this time focusing predominantly on the nineteenth
century. In this ambitious work, Koerner uncovers “lost” cookbooks while also
examining their vast interconnections with both local communities and distant
publishing projects. Koerner’s highly engaging prose also serves as an
excellent entrée into academic food studies, covering both how to critically
read cookbooks and what is gained by doing so. Reference winner Wartime North
Africa: A Documentary History, 1934–1950, is a tremendous work of archival
scholarship. Aomar Boum and Sarah Stein selected documents from a wide mix of
languages — French, Arabic, Judeo-Arabic, Spanish, Hebrew, Darija, Tamazight,
Italian, and Yiddish — and, in many cases, translated them into English for the
first time. The documents shine a light on underexplored aspects of Jewish
history and are a wonderful resource for scholars at all stages: experts and
also undergraduates beginning their study of Jewish History.

For his commitment and continuing support of the Bibliography Award, AJL would
like to recognize and thank Mr. Eric Kline of Santa Monica. AJL would also like
to thank all the members of the Reference & Bibliography Awards committee for
their diligent work: Anna Levia, Sharon Benamou, Diane Mizrahi, and Daniel
Kestenbaum. We also extend thanks to previous committee member Haim Gottschalk
for preparing the committee for success with his own bibliographic efforts.

With sadness, I am reporting that Helene Gersuk, a long time member of AJL and
AJLSC, passed away June 13, 2023. Helene was the synagogue librarian at Valley
Beth Shalom in Encino, California. She regularly attended conferences while
still working at VBS and qualified for advanced accreditation for the library.
With sadness,

Re: [ha-Safran] Story request --> found

2023-06-14 Thread Daniel Stuhlman via Hasafran
I found the story. I checked several books of I.L. Peretz stories and
didn't find "My Mother's Kerchief." I concluded this was not a Peretz
story. With the help of Dr. Google I found a story with the words
"kerchief" and "mother." I went to my shelves and found a story called
"The Kerchief" by S.Y. Agnon that talked about a kerchief owned by the
narrator's mother. I sent a copy of the story to the patron and she said,
"That's the story."

To summarize : The patron had the wrong author, the wrong title, and the
wrong original language.
Many catalog records have formatted contents notes. This helps patrons
find stories in anthologies.

I asked for help and no one was able to give even a reasonable suggestion.
Suggesting that I contact XYZ Library is not much help. This was a
published story, not an archival or unique story.
