I’ve been using Baker& Taylor for years.  Their discounts snd services are good
And the reps are helpful even if you are a small libraryBut you do need to go
elsewhere for specialized Judaica. Publishers may be able to work with you

I hope that helps.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Buying books

We have recently revitalized our synagogue library moving everything onto an
online catalog (using Opals).
Now we are looking for recommendations for purchasing new books. Years ago we
used Baker and Taylor but am looking for other possibilities. Are religious
organizations given discounts?
Appreciate all suggestions.

Many thanks

Re: [ha-Safran] Checking out books

I agree with Amalia. Our congregation is very fluid. It is time consuming to
issue and keep track of barcodes especially if you are just getting on line. I
do not use patron bar codes in either library where I work. It works just fine.

Re: [ha-Safran] question

2023-07-24 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
We have a file with a card for each member. The member finds the card in the
file, paperclips the book circulation card to the name card and leaves it in a
designated box. When I come into the library the next time , I entered the
information into our circ system.
It's simple and works as long as the files are up-to-date and if the book
borrowers follow instructions.
if you have a volunteer in charge on Shabbat, there should be no problems.

Re: [ha-Safran] Beth David Library (Reform) in Westminster California is Being cut in half.

2023-07-13 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
 Toby,
So beautifully put especially your point about having the clergy and staff
promote the library.
I feel fortunate to still have a job even though it's only 6 hours a week,
have had the same salary for 10 years ( it's sort of a trade-off for flexible
vacation time), the same budget of $1800, and do Hebrew School lessons weekly
and see the preschool for storytime. No time to promote the library; no money
to do meaningful or memorable programming. People who do use the library praise
it. I often get new books before the public library but, as you say, people
don't think of checking the synagogue despite telling people in real time that
we have the books they want to read. It's easier to have the books delivered to
their front doors or to borrow an ebook from the public library.
Our public library- a good one- didn't even promote Jewish American Heritage
Month with a display, never mind programs that might expose patrons-or
customers- to Jewish interest books.
Maybe we need to reinvent our selves as learning or literacy centers to appeal
to younger families.
It seems to be an unsolvable problem, but one which AJL is doing it's best to
help solve.

cut back librarian hours to the point of ridiculousness back in 2017 and still
has no librarian. The other had me remove 1/3 of their collection to change the
library to a multi-use room. All both needed, in my opinion, was more promotion
from the clergy and staff plus displays in the foyer. The pandemic certainly
made the situation even worse as people were not in the building for 2 years
and even now, things are still hybrid.
My take on the demise of time and/or money investment in synagogues libraries
is 1) Many do not think of checking the synagogue library collection for
specific titles or browsing like they do the public libraries. 2)  Many people
nowadays do not value serendipity or the library experience. They buy books
online or visit independent bookstores. 3) synagogues themselves are changing
and having to make tough financial choices. 4) Clergy and staff do not promote
library usage - I cannot explain that one at all!
This is all especially sad because our Jewish youth are not getting exposed to
good quality Judaic literature from a curated collection. Books with Jewish
themes or characters are buried in school and public libraries.
Thanks to AJL, at least we have access to great recommendations to award
winning Jewish books. We just have to do our best to promote them. Even sadder
than the loss of these synagogue libraries is the loss of so many regional JCC
or Jewish public libraries!
keep up the good work, AJL!

My library at Beth David in Westminster, California is being cut in half.  They
need the classroom for the Youth Lounge.  The Youth Lounge is being turned into
a preschool classroom to make more money for the synagogue as the Preschool has
a waiting list. The 1,100 childrens and teen books are going into the Religious
School Directors office. The 100 reference books are going into the Rabbi's
office. 400 of the 1800 adult fiction and non-fiction books are staying in the
new Youth Lounge.  The remaining 1,400 or 1,500 books are going away.  This is
a nightmare to eliminate the books that are going away from my ResourceMate

 Lisa,
Thanks for sharing this. I remember being on the Sydney Taylor Book Award
Committee that year and asking the same question about cute animals in Jewish
books. Jane Zalben's Benny books were a breakthrough and  the book was
designated an honor book. Patricia Polacco's The Keeping Quilt was the prize
recipient that year.

So happy to see that Benny and his family are still around.

 Linda,

There's a series- not new but still relevant, I think, called You be the Judge.
It has some ethical questions in it. Although I've used it with younger kids,
like upper elementary, I think it could be used with highschoolers. Torah Aura
is the publisher.
There are at least 3 in the series and are available on Amazon and maybe at a

Thanks for all the feedback. This question turned out to be a lot harder than
I thought since even Hebrew speakers were stumped.

But this is what makes library work both challenging and fun.

Happy Thanksgiving! Adar, adar, adar!

It's actually hard for Americans here to find whole turkeys to roast; the ovens
are generally so small you could barely fit a whole turkey in. But my daughter
did see whole turkeys in a supermarket in Bakaa (lots of Yanks) this week. I'm
Canadian, and we don't normally make as big a thing about Thanksgiving as the
Americans (we also celebrate our Thanksgiving at harvest time - ha-ha-ha!), but
my granddaughter goes to an English gan run by Bostonians, and they actually
did Thanksgiving crafts, just the way you would in an American kindergarten,
last week. (Apparently some Americans even miss American Christmas so much that
they do that stuff out of nostalgia -- in Israel! May be an urban legend, but I
think I read an article about this in Jerusalem Report some years ago. My guess
is -- Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem!)

Thank you to everyone who tried to answer my question of the sound a turkey
makes in Hebrew. I received several suggestions as well as some interesting-and
fun- turkey related videos.

There were a variety of answers, none of which sounds much like gobble, gobble.

The best answer came from my synagogue's operations director, a native Israeli
who, confirmed one of the suggestions.

A turkey's sound in Hebrew is adar, adar, adar or in some places written hadar,
hadar, hadar.

If you ask a turkey when Purim is, the turkey will answer Adar, Adar.

Re: [ha-Safran] thoughts on "Let the celebration begin"

2022-05-04 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
When Let the Celebration Begin first came out there was a huge discussion about
its appropriateness. Most Judaic children’s librarians had major problems with
the book and the dissonance between the story and the illustrations. However,
secular librarians and press seemed very positive about the book. I did not buy
the book although I like Wild’s artwork and other books. The age range is also
a problem.

At the time of the book’s publication, I was a school librarian. I did not buy
the book for my school.

I haven’t seen the reprint but I am glad to hear that there is back matter
explaining the rationale.

hear that it's done regularly in Israel, I'm generally uncomfortable with
introducing Holocaust to very young children; how can you relate something so
horrible without either watering it down or terrifying them? The parents in our
synagogue agree with me, so I keep those books (acquired before my time) in a
spot away from the kids. They are listed in our online catalog, so if the
parents want them, that's their business, but so far none have.

If you look through this Amazon listing, Publisher's Weekly found it
distasteful (and identified it's audience as age 3-6), but School Library
Journal liked it (suggesting an audience of grade 4 and up!)

Our school library has just received a donation of a book called "A time for
toys" by Margaret Wild - It has been more recently been published under the
title "Let the Celebration begin". Though the front covers are different, the
rest of the book is the same. In view of lots of discussion about who should
write Holocaust books, the softening of the horrors of the camps, and where the
focusof such stories sit, I am curious to know how people feel about this book.
The illustrations (and narrative honestly) make me feel uncomfortable though I
cannot explain why, and the more recent edition has a rationale and background
in the back by the author and illustrator. They talk about the sensitivity of
the illustrations and storyline, but I am somewhat uncomfortable with the whole
book. I would appreciate others' thoughts and insights, and whether you have
put it in your library.

Re: [ha-Safran] Obsolete media in synagogue libraries

2022-02-28 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
I've been at my current job for about 9 years. I've not yet had anyone borrow
a VHS tape or even ask about them. The other day the synagogue's executive
director just took them all including the furniture case that they were stored
in and tossed the entire thing.

I think that's basically the future for these collections even if there is
good-or even-rare material. Most people don't have the equipment and are more
likely to stream than insert a piece of plastic or cartridge into a machine.
We can't save everything and unless our libraries are archives and have
unlimited space, de-accessing is the way to go.
On the other hand, other media such as books have longer lives since there is
nothing between the user and the medium. This same ED  wants to get rid of all
the "old" books- mostly religious reference books. So far I've been able to
keep her hands off those.

Have you all tossed your VHS collections? I’ve kept ours because we still have
equipment to play them. But really, is it past time to toss them? Any criteria
for keeping some? People don’t even use DVDs or CDs anymore. In our large (22k
items) collection we have lots of both. I’d be interested in hearing opinions
and experience of others.

[ha-Safran] pages needed

Bereshit /Genesis, translated and adapted from the Hebrew by Aryeh Newman,
fourth revised edition, World Zionist Organization, 1981. Is missing pages
289-320.

I would be extremely grateful if someone could send me those pages so that I

[ha-Safran] Manuscript Committee opening

2021-06-06 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran

There is currently an opening on the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Committee.
The Committee reviews unpublished manuscripts of Jewish literary fiction for
ages 8-13 using a standard set of criteria. The winning manuscript (there is
not always a winning manuscript) receives a cash prize. In the last few years
several of the manuscripts have been published by both small presses and large
publishing houses. The committee consists of 5 members plus a chairperson. The
judging takes place in early winter after the December 31 deadline. For more
details about the award visit the AJL website. The committee membership
represents AJL's diverse geographical, philosophical, and professional
diversity. Current members of another award committee are not eligible. If you
are interested in serving on this committee (a five year term) please send me a
resume and writing samples, preferably reviews of children's books.
Please reply off list as soon as possible

[ha-Safran] immigration question

2021-05-16 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
Hello,great problem solvers,

I have a patron who is doing some genealogical research. He wants to know why
people did not leave their countries. He is especially interested in Russia.

I know anecdotally what the reasons might be but can't find any substantial
research articles as he requested.
Any suggestions?

[ha-Safran] VHS needed

2021-05-07 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
Does anyone have a copy of the video of The Cafeteria by Singer. World Cat
seems to indicate two different ones; 1984 and 2000.

It looks like it was never made into a DVD. The item is no longer available for
purchase as far as I can tell.
Of course, I'd take it in any form.

If so, would you be willing to lend it to me for use in a class?

Re: [ha-Safran] Looking for specific Passover picture book

2021-03-18 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
Eric Kimmel wrote When Mindy Saved Hanukkah about a tiny family who rescues
the Hanukkah candle in the face of a big cat but Mindy is not a mouse. However,
there is a grandfather and it's set in the Eldridge Street Synagogue. Great
Story nut wrong holiday. You could probably adapt it for Passover.

Or it could be The Passover Mouse but there's no Mindy or synagogue, as I
remember.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Looking for specific Passover picture book

I want to find a book that I used to use as a script for play theater. I'm
hoping someone out there in the world of children's Jewish picture books will
know it.It takes place in a synagogue, I believe located on the Lower East Side
of NY, where a family of (Jewish) mice live behind the wall. When the family
realizes that there is chametz on the top shelf of the Aron HaKodesh, the girl
mouse in the family is the heroine that outwits the synagogue cat, with the
help and support of her grandfather, and gets the chametz. Does this ring any
bells?

This question was posed to AJL on our Facebook page. Does anyone know the
answer?

"My daughter just got engaged and I'd like to send her a book I remember from
at least 30 years ago--maybe much longer.
It's a children's book in which an eastern European Jew is trying to plan a
wedding and gets input on what is the best thing to serve--pure spring water
comes up as a good option because it's so good.
Does anyone know what I'm thinking of? Do you remember the author and title?"

[ha-Safran] pages needed

2020-08-14 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
A congregant desperately needs pages from a book for a reading on Rosh
Hashanah. Recordings are being done on Tuesday. Our copy is long overdue and I
have no hopes of getting it back; local libraries have none, and there's not
enough time to order.
If a generous librarian could send pages, it would be most appreciated. There
are a lot, so I understand if it is impossible but I told her thast i'd try.
The book is Beginning Anew: a women's companion to the High Holidays by Reimer
and Kates.
The pages are 127-201, but especially 127-145 and 174-200.
Thank you.

What a great conference. Thanks you to everyone who made it happen. I'm sure it
wasn't easy and it was disappointing not to have th conference in Evanston.

But though we lost some things, the gain seemed to be immense. So many more
people were able to attend and the virtual platform allowed last minute
additions to the program without scrambling for time and space.
And getting there was so easy- no delays and comfortable accommodations.

We have been using OPALs, if it is within your
budget. It will printout labels for the barcode,
card pocket, card (if you're using the latter two),
tell you when an item is overdue, creates reports
etc.

Shalom,

I posted this in the summer, but I got a limited response.

I've volunteered to help get my synagogue's library in order. There are two
parts to the collections. The adult reference materials are held in the chapel
and will be checked out on an honor system; the children's library is in a room
that is being converted into an official library. Of course my synagogue will
be joining AJL.

Another shul member who already works in a public school will be in charge of
children's collection. She wanted to know what program works best for a
collection of about 1,000 title. We want to be able to check out books using a
scanner, so I'd also appreciate a suggestion as to what scanner you'd recommend.

The better machines had printers attached. Unfortunately, the quality was often
poor. The reference book you remember  was probably green bound  The Readers'

It certainly was a tedious process, but it did work.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Using microfiche in the 70s

Hi Friends,

I am trying to recall how we used microfiche before email. If someone in the
1970s wanted to research newspapers what was the process? In my recollection it
started with looking up the topic in a large reference book, locating the
appropriate article and ordering the film from the research office in the
library. What I don’t remember is how we made copies of the film from the
reader. I’m working on a project and I want to be sure I am accurate.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: [ha-Safran] Younger Borrowers

2018-10-22 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
Well said, Rachel.
I do basically the same with a letter home, but I do make it clear that the
parent is responsible for lost items. The Library can bill the parents as part
of the regular billing procedure.
Because the library is not staffed a good part of the time, the preschool is
the only part of the school that has regular check-out time. Everyone else is
on the honor system.
I must say that the little kids -and their parents- are much more responsible
about returning items than the grown-ups are.

div.yiv9848550227WordSection1 {} #yiv9848550227 I’m struggling to fathom why
any school, synagogue or community center library that maintains a circulating
children’s collection would create obstacles that would prevent children from
checking out books.  Why do you need an OK from a responsible adult?  My
children check out library books from their public school library and I have
never been asked to provide consent.  It is part of the curriculum.  I would
doubt that day school librarians require parental consent to use the school
library. I’m not sure why a supplemental Hebrew School ay a synagogue (or JCC)
should be viewed any differently.     As I wrote to Lee privately, children at
our synagogue begin checking out books from the Library starting with the
3-year-old preschool classes and continuing with all of the religious school
classes PK-7th grade.  At the beginning of the school year we enter all of the
students into our system. We also send home a letter to the parents, letting
them know their children will be checking out books, explaining the library
program, and inviting them to visit with their children to check out even more
books.  During the 2017-2018 school year, religious school students checked out
540 items and our preschool students checked out 911 items.  Over 98% were
returned before the summer.  Close to 1500 hundred Jewish books went into
Jewish homes – this is what we are all about.  I consider the loss of a couple
dozen books each year the cost of doing business.  Moreover, most of the
missing books are eventually found or returned.  (I also look at it as natural
weeding!).      I really discourage you from creating lots of rules and
policies.  It will just make more work for you and make the library less
inviting, less accessible, and less used!    Feel free to contact me if anyone
has any questions or wants to discuss further.  I am also happy to share our
circulation policies.    Rachel Kamin, Director The Joseph and Mae Gray

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Younger Borrowers    Per my earlier note to this list
(copied below) I promised to summarize responses I received.  I heard from
three colleagues, reporting their experience and opinions about adding younger
borrowers to our temple library's lending service.    The responses were
unanimous that we needed the ok of a responsible adult for accountability.
Regarding a cut-off age for lending, their as a wide range of opinion. One
library allows children as young as preschoolers to borrow books, while the
others suggested 13 as the minimum age. In retrospect, I can see how libraries
might differ on such points depending on their circumstances. Since our library
is unstaffed most hours and we use a self-check system, we cannot expect
younger children

[ha-Safran] genealogy

I've been asked to provide some resources for a teacher in our religious
school-grades 5-7- on genealogy. He also asked for material on Sephardic

I have found almost nothing in print for the age group and online sources are
pretty sophisticated.

Any ideas would be helpful.
