Yes, we got this as well, below:

Very warm greetings,

My name is Sam Mandel. I recently came by your synagogue’s website and have
looked through it and I must say that I am very intrigued by the historical
significance of your synagogue. It seems that Massachusetts used to be a very
burgeoning Jewish community and to a large part has still maintained a great
deal of Jewish life as well as their beautifully built synagogues. I have a
great appreciation for these places of worship.

One of my biggest hobbies is visiting old synagogues and collecting old Jewish
books or “seforim” in Hebrew or English as well as old artifacts and as such I
have a collection at home of all these interesting books and items that
sometimes would not have been appreciated otherwise. I also enjoy going through
the synagogues' gnizas; the place where a synagogue typically puts their old
books that are not in good shape anymore.
I was wondering if there is a time we can meet at the synagogue and go through
what you have in the synagogue and in exchange for some of these books give a
very nice donation or perhaps replace the book with a newer version to the
synagogue to make it worth your time in the event I take anything.

I can be reached via this email and my cell phone at
347-370-8115<tel:%28347%29%20370-8115> . Please let me know of your
considerations of this.

I thank you in advance.

useful. We are having a book sale in January (donations that are

Handing them off to him would actually help me out a lot. It just

Subject: [ha-Safran] Looking for examples of Jewish Advocacy throughout history

Hello all-

I am looking for examples of Jews advocating for government
help/protection/safety any time throughout Jewish history. This article in
Tablet magazine draws a comparison between rabbis protesting the Iran deal and
a similar march during WWII when American rabbis advocated for US aid for
European Jews
http://www.tabletmag.com/scroll/193387/the-rabbis-take-washington#<http://www.tabletmag.com/scroll/193387/the-rabbis-take-washington>

Does anyone have similar examples or can help with where to start looking?
There must be hundreds of examples, but need help with a starting point or a
way to narrow it down.

Thank you!

[ha-Safran] new publication about DC's Soviet Jewry movement

2014-09-17 Thread Claire Uziel
We are proud to present our new Voices of the Vigil exhibition catalog.

The original exhibition tells the story of the Washington-area Jewish
community's efforts to assist their oppressed brethren behind the Iron
Curtain-most notably through a 1970-1991 daily vigil across 16th Street, NW,
from the Soviet Embassy. Learn more: http://jhsgw.org/exhibitions

In addition to the content of the original exhibition, this publication
contains:

* Memoir by Natan Sharansky, Chair of the Jewish Agency for Israel,
relating his experiences in a Soviet prison camp and the impact of the Soviet
Jewry movement.

* Article by Ambassador Richard Schifter recalling his diplomatic
activities on behalf of Soviet Jewry.

* Reminiscences of Norman Goldstein, Chair of Exhibition Community
Advisory Committee, looking back 20 years later on the local grassroots
movement.

* Excerpts from oral histories and memoirs from the Soviet Jewry
Archival Collection
