Harvey Sukenic clearly makes the case. VHS videos may not simply be reproduced. One should approach the copyright owner and either request permission to copy the VHS for a fee or purchase a new DVD copy. The key here is that you make “best effort” to contact either the copyright owner, the original distributor of that title or the company that now represents the film. Copyright law is in place to allow creators to derive income from the works they produce. We want to call your attention to the publication of Eric Goldman's new book, The American Jewish Story through Cinema (University of Texas Press). Dear Aileen: Though DVD is the now technology, there is no reason-especially if you cannot replace the VHS with DVD- why you should not continue to use the VHS tapes you have, especially if it is a simple play all situation. Emperors and Rebels is in two 32 minute parts (on one DVD) and provides the historical background for the Maccabean Revolt and its aftermath.
