[ha-Safran] New book -- Sephardic Women's Voices by Nina Lichtenstein
Sephardic Women’s Voices: Out of North Africa by Nina B. Lichtenstein has just been published by Gaon Books. Sephardic Women’s Voices traces the lives and writings of contemporary Sephardic women from North Africa and their migration to France with the meaning of their Sephardic heritage, their roles as women, and their experience of exile. ISBN: 9781935604884. Available from Ingram, Gaon Books, Amazon and others. “Nina Lichtenstein’s book should be required reading in all Modern Jewish History courses because it fills the gap created by our almost exclusive emphasis on Ashkenazi history...A masterpiece!” — Shulamit Reinharz, Jacob Potofsky Professor of Sociology and Founder/Director Hadassah-Brandeis Institute and the Women’s Studies Research Center, Brandeis University. Author of One Hundred Years of Kibbutz Life and twelve other books. "This is a groundbreaking work which brings to the attention of the English-reading public the important creative work of Jewish women authors of North African origin in France since decolonization. Nina Lichtenstein masterfully provides valuable historical background and cultural contextualization together with insightful literary analysis. Her engaging and often lyric style is at once both intimately conversational and academically intellectual." — Norman A. Stillman, Schusterman-Josey Professor of Judaic History Emeritus, University of Oklahoma. Author of The Jews of Arab Lands and Jews in Arab Lands in Modern Times. Ron D. Contemporary Latin American Jewish Movement Comment: "Sephardic Jews is a much-welcomed gateway to exploring the cultural and religious heritage of this community. Hart’s precise and very readable text reveals the complicated journey of Spanish and Portuguese Jews from their connections to the biblical era and through the 21st century. Turning its pages, one marvels at the instrumental and pivotal contributions that the Sephardim made to Spain. The book is simultaneously a brief chronological history and artful recounting of the lives of key personages like Damia al-Kahina, the Jewish Queen of the Berbers. Yes, Maimonides is here too, but more importantly so are carefully selected poems, letters, and life details of other Sephardic Jews. Its inclusion of images of synagogues, material culture, manuscripts, and people adds a splendid vibrancy to the text. The author also thoughtfully delves into the contemporary issues of crypto-Judaism and returnees to Judaism in the American Southwest. In short, Sephardic Jews is the perfect companion for one’s own journey into this fabled, but living history." —Roger Louis Martínez-Dávila, Ph.D. Professor, University of Colorado and Universidad de Carlos III de Madrid Ron D. Hart is a cultural anthropologist (Ph.D. Indiana University) and postdoctoral work in Jewish Studies at the University of Oxford, Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies where he focused on Jews in Medieval Spain. He is a Research Associate of the Latin American and Iberian Institute at the University of New Mexico. Hart has done research on Sephardic traditions in Spain, North Africa, and South America with special attention to the Andalusian exchange between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Re: [ha-Safran] Crypto Jews
Related to the converso (also referred to as crypto-Jewish) experience, the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe is organizing the first major museum exhibition on this subject, which is entitled, “Fractured Faiths: Spanish Judaism, the Inquisition, and New World Identities”. The exhibition will open in May, 2016. I am the historical consultant for the exhibition and co-editor of the accompanying book. Gaon Books has also published 6 books on the converso/crypto-Jewish phenomenon. [ha-Safran] New Book -- Voices in the Wilderness: Emerging Roles of Israel Clergywomen
Voices in the Wilderness: Emerging Roles of Israel Clergywomen, edited by Jonathan Friedmann and Meeka Simerly gives the voices of Israeli and Israeli-born clergywomen, who have confronted societal norms and religious barriers to become spiritual leaders. Through the inviting lens of personal narratives, they touch upon an array of contemporary issues and offer their hopes for the future. Public society, whether Jewish or not, is much more a wilderness for women than for men, even in the 21st century. Thus it is one of the cutting edges of our evolution: women engaging with and confronting structures that restrict women’s and men’s full potential. The writers in this book show us how to meet each stage of life as a place for growth, like the stages of the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness. Moscow, New York, Tel Aviv, Romania, Big Sur...integrating histories of pain and confusion, reflecting on experiences of anger and shame, love and comfort, questioning and spiritual exaltation. You will find these stories...a source of inspiration for the future. Tamar Frankiel, Ph.D., President, Academy for Jewish Religion, California Far from the traditional silencing of women’s voices, this ground breaking work infuses new meaning to the term Kol Isha, impressing upon us how important it is to hear women’s voices loud and clear. Rabbi Daniel Bouskila, International Director, Sephardic Educational Center The stories of women rabbis and cantors are the voices that have been missing for centuries. This book brings a collection of extraordinary women from the wilderness closer to the Promised Land; to the place where their Torah, their music, their creativity is a blessing to the entire Jewish people. What a gift we have received, to follow their hopes and struggles and ultimately their unique accomplishments that serve as an inspiration for the next generation of women and men. Re: [ha-Safran] Looking for memoirs or compilations of memoirs by Jewish women
Anne F. Schlezinger’s book, Pulling It all Together: Diary by One of America’s First Jewish Women Federal Judges, Introduction by Prof. Shulamit Reinharz, Co-Director of Hadassah-Brandeis Institute narrates the story of one of the first Jewish women lawyers hired by the Federal government in the 1930’s and later became one of the first Jewish woman Federal judges in the 1960’s. She endured chauvinistic questioning before Congressional committees but eventually became a judicial insider in Washington, and her insights are interesting. Her struggle for professional recognition shows life changing from anti-Semitism and misogyny to acceptance of equitable participation as attorney and judge. She was a forerunner for Judges Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan. “Pulling It All Together is a highly unusual, revealing and well-edited diary that introduces us to the life and work of one of America’s first Jewish women judges.” - Prof. Jonathan Sarna. [ha-Safran] Ruth Sohn's new book on being Jewish in Egypt
Rabbi Ruth H. Sohn has just published: Crossing Cairo: A Jewish Woman's Encounter with Egypt. Judith Plaskow, Professor of Religious Studies at Manhattan College says, The richness of Crossing Cairo is that it functions on a number of different levels. It’s a compelling personal story of the author’s sojourn in Egypt; it provides insight into the Arab Spring and the events that led up to it; most importantly, it explores the question of what it means genuinely to listen to the “Other’s” narrative and use it as a lens for examining one’s own. Sohn’s willingness to open herself to Egyptians’ perspectives on Israel and Judaism is most impressive. ISBN: 9781935604501 (paperback), 270 pages, $18.95; 9781935604518 (ebook), $8.95. Gaon Books.
