[ha-Safran] Baruch Dayan Emet - Stanley Judah Nachamie; Shiva information

2022-09-08 Thread Rita Lifton via Hasafran
The shiva for Stanley Nachamie, Z"L, will be as follows - at the home of
Benjamin and Susan Nachamie, apt. 7D, 1175 York Avenue (between 63rd and 64th
St.), NY, NY. The shiva continues today, Thursday, September 8 and Sunday,
September 11, 2 pm to 7:30 pm with minyan at 7 pm.

Stanley was a long-time member of national AJL and AJL-NYMA. He was
instrumental in coordinating the minyanim for several AJL conferences including
the 2004 conference held in Brooklyn, N.Y. He held positions at The Library of
The Jewish Theological Seminary and at City University of New York, working on
authority control. I, along with other catalogers who were colleagues of
Stanley while he was at JTS Library, recall the precision with which he handled
authority work. That dedication to detail contributed significantly to the
quality of the JTS Library database.

May Stanley's family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Rita Lifton
Past-President, AJL-NYMA

Shalom,
I’m looking for a suggestion of a collection of short stories for a women's
discussion group.
A discussion stories from the book Apples from the Desert was very successful.
The discussion on the stories in the book After Abel (recommended by Rachel
Kamin) went well too.
Thank you to Rachel for suggesting the book The Best Place on Earth. I like it
but I was asked for additional suggestions.
Shabbat shalom,
Amalia

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Chumashim in Hebrew--Spanish in Israel?

I, too, would like to know where to get Hebrew-Spanish chumashim and seddurim
(in the U.S.). I traveled to Cuba a year ago, bringing donations, but could not
find Hebrew-Spanish religious books. I'm still in touch with congregations in
Cuba, so would like to send, if possible.

(I also wrote an article for Tablet, "Seeking the Jews of
Cuba.")

thanks,
Michal

Hi all and hag sameach from Israel!

I am visiting for two weeks and want to take chumashim back to the US in Hebrew
and Spanish for a small group that needs it.

Do you know where I can get any in Israel--or in the US? The group is Reform
but the chumashim can be from any viewpoint, or even without commentary.

Thanks for your help, and thanks to those who helped me about a month ago. You
are a wonderful group!

2:00-4:00 pm

Baghdadi Jewish Life Seen Through the Iraqi Jewish Archive - Dina Herbert,
Project Librarian, Iraqi Jewish Archive, National Archives

In June 2004, at the Annual Convention of the Association of Jewish Libraries,
hosted by AJL-NYMA and held in Brooklyn, New York, Doris Hamburg and Mary Lynn
Ritzenthaler of the National Archives spoke about the books, documents and
scrolls pertaining to the Iraqi Jewish community that had been discovered by
American soldiers in May 2003 in the flooded basement of Saddam Hussein's
intelligence headquarters in Baghdad. Mss. Hamburg and Ritzenthaler described
the enormous task that lay before them and others at the National Archives in
the effort to preserve what came to be called the Iraqi Jewish Archive. Fast
forward ten years and that effort has now come full circle. AJL-NYMA is
thrilled to have Dina Herbert of the National Archives speak about her work as
Project Librarian for the Iraqi Jewish Archive.

Johanna Spector's Life and Work: From Latvia to the World - Michala Biondi,
Archivist/Project Manager, Johanna L. Spector Project, Library of The Jewish
Theological Seminary; Processing Archivists, Shira Bistricer, Nicole
Greenhouse, Cynthia Schwartz

Dr. Johanna Spector (1915-2008) was a professor of ethnomusicology at The
Jewish Theological Seminary, the first woman to be granted the title of full
professor at that institution. A native of Latvia who survived the Holocaust,
she was a world-renowned scholar in her field, an author of books and articles,
and a producer of documentary films. The team of archivists working on the
Johanna Spector Archive housed at JTS Library will discuss this rich archive
which includes material in the fields of ethnography, history and anthropology.
In particular, the collection documents the native liturgical and folk music
from the nearly extinct Jewish communities of India, Yemen, Azerbaijan, Egypt,
Armenia and the Samaritan people, offering a window into these communities
before they were influenced by modern cultures and melodies.

*Following the formal program, there will be optional presentations about JTS
Library's archival collections by Dr. Sarah Diamant, Administrative Librarian
for Special Collections, and about the JTS Music Archives by Dr. Eliott Kahn,
Music Archivist. Presentations will last approximately one hour. Please
indicate if you are interested in attending this segment when you RSVP.

A patron is looking for a play that was performed several years ago about a
Jewish slave-owning family in the Old South.
Does anyone know what that play would be?

[ha-Safran] Tour of Manuscript Exhibit, Columbia University, 12/12/12

2012-12-05 Thread Rita Lifton
The New York Metropolitan Area Chapter of the Association of Jewish Libraries
(AJL-NYMA) invites you to a special tour of the exhibit The People in the
Books: Hebraica and Judaica Manuscripts From Columbia University Libraries. The
tour will be led by the exhibition's curator, Michelle Chesner, the Norman E.
Alexander Librarian for Jewish Studies at Columbia University.

The tour will take place on Wednesday, December 12th at 2 pm, at Butler
Library, the Rare Book Manuscript Library, 6th Floor East, 535 West 114th
Street, New York, NY 10027. Kindly RSVP to Michelle Chesner by December 10th at
mc3...@columbia.edumailto:mc3...@columbia.edu.

About the exhibit:

A printed book and a manuscript codex may contain the same text, but one can
argue that the latter is inherently richer. The printing press produced a
multitude of identical copies, but each manuscript is unique and individual.
In a manuscript, each page had to be carefully prepared and every letter
required painstaking work. Ultimately, each manuscript contains more than just
the text within it. Isaac Mendelsohn, author of the first catalog of the
Hebrew manuscripts at Columbia, wrote, An old Hebrew book is ... more than a
mere collection of bound sheets on which a given text is [written]. The notes
on the flyleaves, the remarks on the margins the names of its various owners,
and the countries in which it saw service actually make it into two books - one
containing the text, the passive part, and the other the history of the persons
who owned and used it.

This exhibition attempts to show the second kind of book: the book that tells a
story about its authors, its owners, and its users. Occasionally, the story is
found within the main portion of the text, but it is also found in the
paratext: in the wine stains on a Passover Haggadah, in the candle wax in a
prayer book, or in an odd notation on a title page or in a colophon. On a
journey through the exhibit, it is our hope that visitors will find at least
one story that inspires, intrigues, or ignites the imagination.
