[ha-Safran] Pres. Yitzhak Ben-Zvi and Soviet Ambassador Abramov

2020-12-16 Thread Shulamith Z Berger via Hasafran
A query on behalf a researcher: is there a reliable source for this story?

Receiving the credentials of Soviet Ambassador Alexander Abramov five years
after Israel’s rebirth of independence, President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi explained
that he left Russia in 1901 because there was “no room” there for him and Czar
Nicholas II. “Why did you go, though?” his guest continued. “You should have
held ground.” Ben-Zvi replied: “I had somewhere to go. The czar didn’t.”

Resources library staff have checked mention a meeting but not the specific
anecdote - the resources checked were: Ben-Zvi's military attache's diary, a
collection of documents on his presidency, and the Jerusalem Post, Ha-Tsofeh
and Davar around the date of Abramov's presenting his credentials to President
ben-Zvi (Dec. 4, 1953)

Thank you and חנוכה שמח

Subject: [EXT] - [Arcan-l] Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada announces
online access to oral histories and newspaper archive

**External Email**

The Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada has recently made two of its major
collections available online: our digitized collections of oral histories and
newspapers. This means that researchers can now access from their home
computers a number of items that before could only be retrieved by a visit to
the JHCWC's Archives, which house the physical collections.

The oral history collection consists of 200 audio clips, including oral
histories of members of the western Canadian Jewish community, such as rabbis,
businesspeople, professionals, politicians, and Holocaust survivors. These
interviews were recorded between 1968 and 2011. The collection also features
recorded lectures on topics that have been presented by the Centre over the
years, including the garment industry, farm colonies, and the YMHA, among
others.

The newspaper collection dates back to the early years of the 20th century,
with Der Yiddishe Vort (The Israelite Press) a Yiddish language newspaper
published in Winnipeg. Originally known as Der Kanader Yid (The Canadian
Israelite) it was purchased and renamed in 1914. The paper added some English
content through the years, ceased publication in 1967, and was revived in 1969.
It was supported through donations until 1981, when publication permanently
ceased. The Jewish Post was founded in 1925 as an English-language weekly,
catering to the increasing anglicized Jewish community in Winnipeg. The Western
Jewish News began publication as a weekly broadsheet in 1926 and included
correspondents from several communities across western Canada. It was purchased
by the owners of the Jewish Post in 1987 and the two papers were merged.

With these two new collections, researchers can identify various properties
through the JHCWC archives database, then search in the oral history or
newspaper collections to retrieve copies of the relevant documents and
recordings. This project was made possible thanks to a generous donation from
the late Mark Bernstein and funding from the Thomas Sill Foundation, CIRA, and
the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.

[ha-Safran] new reference book on DP camps in Cyprus

2019-08-19 Thread Shulamith Z Berger via Hasafran
I'd like to bring a new reference book to your attention - please note the
description is from Amazon.

The Cyprus Detention Camps: The Essential Research Guide

by Yitzhak Teutsch

Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2019

"Beginning in August 1946, stateless and visaless Jews--most of them survivors
of the Nazi death camps--who sought to immigrate to the Land of Israel were
intercepted by the Royal Navy and deported to the nearby island of Cyprus,
where they were detained in camps surrounded by barbed wire. Despite occupying
a dramatic and fateful position in modern history, this saga has remained
largely inaccessible due to the widespread dispersal of the primary sources and
the linguistic difficulties presented by them. To address these problems, this
book scrutinizes the scholarly literature, consulting hundreds of primary
sources--many of them previously unknown--on three continents, bringing
together interviews with scores of eyewitnesses, and translating
foreign-language terms into English. The result is a comprehensive,
meticulously footnoted guide that uses such tools as maps, a detailed timeline,
and biographical entries to make this riveting saga accessible to a broad
audience of scholars and general readers."

breach the Iron Curtain.

The project was initiated by Glenn Richter, former National Coordinator of the

Subject: [Arcan-l] Launch of Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre Online
Collections Catalogue

May 29, 2018 — VANCOUVER, B.C.

The Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre (VHEC) is pleased to announce the
launch of a new online collections website available at collections.vhec.org.

The VHEC stewards Western Canada's largest collection of Holocaust-related
artefacts, Holocaust testimonies and archival documents. It also holds a
comprehensive library of books, films, educational resources, as well as rare
books and special collections. The VHEC acquires, preserves and makes available
these items as documentary evidence of the Holocaust and its effect on
individuals, families and society.

Documentation is vital for combatting Holocaust denial and will play an
increasingly prominent role in the future of Holocaust education. Accordingly,
the VHEC Collections offers numerous online resources for researchers and
educators including finding aids, research guides, pedagogical materials and
digital primary sources.

The VHEC is continually adding records and digitized items to the catalogue.

About the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre:
The VHEC was founded in 1983 by survivors of the Holocaust who wanted to leave
a legacy to the citizens of British Columbia in the form of an anti-racism
education centre. Their goal was realized in 1994 in the form of the Vancouver
Holocaust Education Centre (VHEC) devoted to Holocaust based anti-racism
education.

The Centre promotes human rights, social justice and genocide awareness through
education and remembrance of the Holocaust. An internationally recognized
teaching museum and the leading provider of Holocaust education in British
Columbia, the VHEC reaches more than 25,000 students and teachers annually. The
VHEC presents numerous public cultural and commemorative events and publishes a
newsletter, Zachor. More information is available at vhec.org.

[ha-Safran] obituary from H-Judaic for Yael Penkower

2016-04-05 Thread Shulamith Z Berger
obituary: Yael
Penkower<https://networks.h-net.org/node/28655/discussions/118976/obituary-yael-penkower>
by Sarah Imhoff

H-Judaic is greatly saddened by the untimely passing of Yael Penkower, age 70,
a reference librarian in New York and Jerusalem, whose sage behind-the-scenes
counsel made possible the work of numerous Judaica scholars during the course
of her career.

Yael's husband, Prof. Monty Penkower, has favored us with the following
necrology:

Yael Penkower passed away at the age of 70 on March 26, 2016. A pioneer in
the field of Judaica reference librarianship, having earned an M.L.S. at
SUNY-Albany, an M.A. in Jewish Studies at Brooklyn College, and pursued
doctoral studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, she put her
many talents to work in the libraries of Stern College, the YIVO Institute for
Jewish Research, the JTS, and the Yeshivah of Flatbush High School. Upon her
husband's making aliya in July 2002 and her return home to Israel, Yael served
for one year as Head Librarian at the Pelech High School for Girls and then for
four years at Beit Morasha. After retirement, she volunteered at the Central
Zionist Archives and the Ben-Yehuda Project.

Yael was a founding member and the Reference Workshop Coordinator
of the Association of Jewish Libraries' New York Metropolitan Area Chapter, and
served as a consultant to Keren Keshet, Am HaSefer, and the Avi-Chai
Foundation. She lectured at the Association of Jewish Studies, the Association
of Jewish Libraries, the European Association of Jewish Studies, and the World
Congress of Jewish Studies, and published in Judaica Librarianship and the AJL
Newsletter. Yael also pioneered in the creation of the Flatbush Women's Tefilla
Group and in the teaching of Mishna and Talmud to its Study Group. Her radiant
smile, her keen intelligence, and her giving nature deeply impressed all with
whom she came into contact. May her memory be for a blessing.

H-Judaic extends deepest condolences to Prof. Penkower and to the entire
bereaved family.
