Re: [ha-Safran] Education board cuts Jewish holidays

2022-11-17 Thread Emily Bergman via Hasafran
Growing up in OK and TX, the Jewish holidays were unexcused absences, and I
could only make up work if the teacher allowed me to do so (I don't
remember ever not being able to make up work). I'd rather get rid of all
religious holidays as public school holidays than choose which ones to
include...but that'll never happen. Emily

Dear colleagues,

I am very delighted to introduce you to Tali Winkler, Yale University Library’s
new Hebraica Metadata Librarian.

Tali started her position on October 24th. She came to us from the University
of Chicago, where she had been a doctoral candidate working on her dissertation
on the Jewish Book Trade in Early Modern Germany. She gained a M.A. in Medieval
Jewish History from Yeshiva University and a B.A. in Near Eastern Languages and
Civilizations from the University of Pennsylvania.

In addition to her studies, Tali has spent time in libraries, museums, and
auction houses since being an undergraduate. Among others, she was involved in
the Footprint Project; in that capacity, she spent time at the Spertus
Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership working with their rare book
collection where she proved her excellent paleographic skills in Hebrew as well
as early modern German scripts.

Please join me in welcoming Tali (and feel free to drop her an email at
tali.wink...@yale.edu).

Best wishes,

Konstanze

[ha-Safran] Education board cuts Jewish holidays

2022-11-17 Thread Martha Simpson via Hasafran
This article was on the front page of the Hartford Courant. Basically, in
Farmington, CT, the town's South Asian population asked the school board to
make Diwali a day off, since Asians represent 23% of the population. Not
only did the school board say no, they also decided to take away Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur, which had already been approved holidays.

I don't know if this is anything we can take action on, but I thought it
was important to let people know about it.

Lizlol (short i sound, long o sound) means to gobble
  לזלול
gobble, gorge, chow down Don't know if that will work for you, but here
is a great Hebrew and many other languages resource.context.reverso.net

Add it to your computer and cell phone and you can highlight text and it
will translate. Better than Google translate but it still translates
Modi'in, Israel as the City of Intelligence.
