Petrol prices may go up further, warns Petronas

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysians may have to pay more for fuel as prices of
petroleum products are now approaching the highest levels in more than a
decade.

Petronas Dagangan Bhd chief executive Ibrahim Marsidi said the price now is
almost similar to that during the Gulf War in 1990 and 1991.

The continuing atmosphere of uncertainty with the imminent US-led attack
against Iraq could drive up petroleum prices further.

Prices are fluctuating. I do not know where they are heading, Ibrahim said
after the launching of the Petronas Streetsmart road safety programme by
Kota Kinabalu mayor Datuk Abdul Ghani Rashid here yesterday.

He added that although Malaysia is also a petroleum producer, the adverse
effects of an increase in fuel prices would outstrip any benefits for the
country.

While current petroleum prices are nowhere near the high levels during the
1979 oil crisis, the present situation is still worrying.

That's why we are hoping that there is no war, Ibrahim added.

He said Malaysia's consumption of petroleum products was now about 200,000
barrels a day while the country's petroleum production was higher.

Petronas, however, has enough petroleum reserves to see the country through
any emergency, he added.

On Petronas' taking over BP petrol stations in Sabah, he said the company
had completed the takeover of 14 stations.

The remaining two properties are going through the various legal motions,
he added.

dimana hasil pengeluaran petrol negara mengatasi penggunaan petrol negara,
mengapa harga petrol mesti naik???
