Hello everybody,
We have 3 server with CSS (2 * 34 players and 1 * 24 players) and I search the 
best way to move a new player when a server is full to one of our other server 
is free.
Explication: if the first server 34/01 is full the new player going 
automatically to the 34/02 and if the 34/02 is full the player move to the 
24/01. Do you now the best way to do this?.

I'm also interested in a solution to do this. But ...

There was a method using ManiAdminplugin. There was another
using EventScript.

Nowadays, there are none (as far as I know). Since you can't
execute the connect command on a client, you can't redirect
it.

Perhaps not. Maybe the player doesnt even know that there is another
server and just goes to play to somewhere else.

Could you explain how this is a problem? Unless you have identical servers I
probably wouldn't want to be redirected to your 24/7 cs_office server when
connecting to your de_ map rotation server that claims to still have free
slots but really doesn't have any free slots at all.

Fun Maps

Thats just a sample of what we do, and we are not that big compared to some
other GSP's

And a redirection feature would help us utilise our server resources more
effectively, especially when you host servers that provide quota free data
usage for clients from a specific ISP.

There are a few things that are not really issues when you run a handful of
servers, but they do become rather large issues when you start running 50,
100, 400 Game Servers, then you have an issue.

I'm not saying that. I agree with you and I definitely either would not
want to be redirected to another server if i plan to play on the one
that i connected to But in a matter of 2 identical servers, this would
not be a problem, unless you care about rank which in most cases, is not
identical. Gladly there is no way to do this at the moment so we can
connect and end up where we want, taken that there are free slots left.

I understand the need and have, in the past, used this method myself.
  But I have also been on the player side and have seen the potential for abuse
  and misuse. I want to connect to the server that _I_ want to connect to.

  I don't need you doing me any favors and redirecting me to one of your other 
servers.

This isn't the STEAM Cry about how unfairly server operators treat us
mailing list is it?

And if you have to play on other peoples servers because nobody is on YOUR
servers, then maybe you ought to take a look in the mirror 1st, before
telling others how to run their servers.

It seems totally nonsensical for 1 server operator to tell another server
operator how they should run THEIR servers. Especially since, if for
whatever reason, anything a server operator does that is perceived to be
bad will only serve to drive players away, and more likely onto your
servers, if they are so much better than the competition.

I had someone request that I find a way around this restriction with a
plugin. The person asking had FIFTY servers forwarding to one server. People
like that are the reason that you can't forward a client's connection when
you change servers or to another of your servers when one is full.

I have to agree that, while it's annoying to not have cexec anymore, it sure
beats joining a server that says 30/32 and being redirected to an empty
10-man server because someone is running fake servers that look full to
redirect people to their actually empty server.

FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Darwin... and I don't speak of the historical
BSDs.

Sure, no more worries. :-P

I do agree that it sucks to support hundreds of systems with different
versions of all sorts of libraries, but I bet there are people in the
BSD camps who are up for more bleeding edge stuff, while others rather
stay conservative with yesterday's C library. What does this give you?
Absolutely the same situation as the bulk of Linux distributions:
different versions of everything.

With Linux, at least the kernel is more or less the same.

P.S. I doubt BSD binaries are worth it until Linux support is
more-than-decent, as Linux has a /slightly/ larger userbase. Fixing
Linux should therefore be a higher priority than getting out
one-quarter-broken binaries for yet another platform.

1. Digests are evil. I don't understand why people use them and I think
they should be criminalized. It's not like modem connections are
prevalent or even acceptable today and there is no other use for digests
than to conserve bandwidth (since mail filtering is all too easy with
mailing lists and digests break the threading of mailing lists). Valve's
listmaster: could you please somehow disable the digest option? Thanks.

2. What the hell happened to 0x0A, the NEWLINE character? I mean, this
is a beautiful piece of ASCII art, but I can't read it.

Valve doesn't get paid DIRECTLY for this, but because of the HUGE
number of people that login to steam, they get to push all of their
games to the continued userbase as well as take a cut of others game.

It is in valves best interest to continue CS, CSS for as long as possible.

On a serious note, I just made the switch to CentOS and I do notice that 
overall, the game server is much smoother and holds the tick better.  However, 
there is still an issue with the linux srcds that causes a hiccup in the middle 
of rounds.  As you can see from other people, it's somewhat serious. :P  I'm 
worried for using it as a match server now =/

Those three questions, I don't think, are asking a lot from VALVe,
considering the amount of time and money we put into hosting the
game. I
don't like the idea, but I'd down-grade packages as needed on my
servers to
keep things running smoothly. Also, I'm not sure *what* you guys are
doing,
but it seems that the updates are a back and forth game with my
ability to
renice my game server processes to -20 (if set, both game servers
spike to 99% CPU used). This is a core functionality to my servers,
and I (as well as
other Source administrators) would really appreciate having it fixed.
It
appears on my servers when two game server processes are set as -20.
However, with one set to -20 and the other left at 0, it's fine.
Again, this fixes/breaks with updates on and off and is sort of
frustrating since
setting the process priority is written into my scripts, and I have 
to
remove it every time it breaks (and game server performance suffers
from
it).

There are so many things you can do with Linux that either you can't do
with Windows, or you have to pay an arm and a leg for professional
software to get it done.  Linux scripting together with cron allows you
to fully automate so many things, simply and cleanly.  Linux shell
scripting is much more powerful and flexible than the equivalent batch
scripting in Windows.

With Linux you have the power to know exactly what is running on your
server, and it is pretty simple to trim off the fat and run only exactly
what you need.  With Windows that is either difficult, or impossible,
especially when it comes to os components (try uninstalling IE or
Outlook Express...).

My experience with Windows and Linux is with HLDS.  When I switched to
Linux, I was able to more than double my sv_maxupdaterate.  The only
reason I can guess for this is that Windows is attaching some kind of
bulky header to each packet, and if this is the case, then the same
performance improvement should apply to SRCDS as well.

I run servers on a home cable connection, so I am much more concerned
with bandwidth usage than a professional server operator might be, but I
would still think that even a professional server operator would find
lower bandwidth usage a good thing.

I run a windows server (SactoBox) and I have to say that it doesn't require
a lot of technical expertise to run it or keep it going though there's
pretty much no way to smoothly automate anything.  I have some startup batch
files and a wait program to keeping everything running, some regedit's to
auto-login, and it works ok, but in no way is it elegant.  If you spend some
money on fire-daemon or use OGSWatcher you can get it automated but there
are downsides to that too.

I have a pocket full of windows certifications and it still took a while to
get it tuned--not that you need a cert. to do it--but that it takes a while
to get it right given your server configuration and connection properties.

On Windows, automatic updates are a pain and I have to keep some services
disabled and re-enable them when running updates (which you had better do
frequently on a Windows box) and the antivirus can be problematic as well
for the same reasons.  There's also false positives on the WGA if you try to
turn off too many windows services (in regards to optimizing
resources/performance) and you have to let Big-Brother watch a little and
decide if you can keep running windows or not.

I started out on windows, as it's my area of expertise, but I did consider
using Linux (mainly because it's free) but, to be honest, I wasn't feeling
up to the learning curve and just wanted to get my server running.  Given
all the hassles and limitations, primarily with getting it to run without
intervention, I'd probably try Linux if I had it to do over again.

I'd recommend using windows if you're more on the novice end of the
novice-expert continuum AND you're main interest is in playing on your
server AND you're not much interested in digging in to os configuration
stuff.  You'll find a lot of complete walkthroughs on the windows side and
people that want to try and help.

Given my novice in Linux (I've only worked with configuring some Linux-based
firewalls) my experience has been that there aren't many walkthroughs and
you'll have to do a lot more learning-per-task than you would under windows.
I've also experienced that linux help tends to be more of the go there,
read that, figure it out, come back, and post your next question and it can
be a little more challenging to make progress.  There are a lot of choices
of Linux distros that will have to be weighed and there have been some
outstanding Linux performance issues with source that you'd have to consider
as well.  (Can they get it fixed? When?)

As you're at the beginning, I think you'd probably have more fun getting it
working under Linux but it will be more work/learning.  Server performance
probably won't be too different given identical hardware but I haven't seen
any direct comparison here to confirm that.  (I would really like that info
if someone can point me to it. Also processor cache level impact to
performance in source if it's out there)

[hlds_linux] srcds 100tick drops to 25tick on +12players

hi guys,

first of all, nice mailing community here :P, keep up the good work :)!

and now:

i´m running 1x 22+1 Slot CS:S + 1x 16+1 Slot CSS:DM (+1=SourceTV and both 
100Tick)

on the following machine:

Processor: 1x AMD Opteron 1218 (2x 2,6Ghz)
RAM: 4GB DDR2-667
OS: Debian 4 Etch (32bit)
Kernel: 2.6.18-cks1 (1000Hz SMP Preempt)
GCC: 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)
gLib: 2.3.6 (Stable)

Now the problem:

On both servers starts the Tick droping down as soon the 12th player joined 
(from 100 to 80), Tick drops further down if more people join till the 
server(s) are full and reach a Tick pending between 25-30 (50 on 16 player DM)

The drop is only there if the players are *alive*!

Also the CPU load is high, but still under 80% (each core), it´s arround 
70-75%. (both servers full!)

i tried now different Kernels from 6.18 till 6.23 and everywhere the same.
by compiling a 2.6.8 kernel i get a error message and compiling fails (i´m not 
sure anymore how the message was, but i think it was something with the SCSI 
parts)

1500Hz Kernel does have also problems, servers lagg like you would have a ping 
of 500+ and tick starts pending between 80  100 (1 player+SourceTV).
I also found no reason for that :(

also it doesn´t matter wich server is on, happens on DM alone and normal alon 
$ on both running together!


Start lines for the servers are:

For the *Normal* one:
-port 27100 +map de_aztec +maxplayers 23 +fps_max 0 -tickrate 100

For the DM:
-port 27200 +map de_aztec +maxplayers 17 +fps_max 0 -tickrate 100

Both servers do have fps_max 600 in their server cfg´s!

If needed i´ll mail the full cfg´s here!

Also theý´re running with the latest update (August 1, 2007)

Hope somone does have a idea, cause it´s unplayable and our Players leave :(

It seems totally nonsensical for 1 server operator to tell another server
operator how they should run THEIR servers. Especially since, if for
whatever reason, anything a server operator does that is perceived to be
bad will only serve to drive players away, and more likely onto your
servers, if they are so much better than the competition.

Well, if they just say. This will be released on FreeBSD REL-X. Then
everyone knows what to run. The choice of FreeBSD is quite simple, since
it is the one with the largest user base.

It is within FreeBSD policy that a binary should be runable during every
mayor version of the OS. And if they decide todo so I would recommend them
to start at REL-7 that will be released any day now. Then they dont have
to worry too much for at least 3 years until REL-9 is due and REL-7 goes
unsupported.

Recent tests also prove that CURRENT (which will become REL-7) is faster
and scales better than Linux. Especially on larger SMP systems. Linux did
have the advantage during REL-5 and REL-6, but much work have been done to
make it more competitive and have now passed on some real life tests. Like
MySQL tests or network speed tests.

And dont forget the most important part... FreeBSD doesnt need to
recompile the kernel to change the HZ-value!!! ;p

 by compiling a 2.6.8 kernel i get a error message and compiling fails (i´m 
 not sure anymore how the message was, but i think it was something with the 
 SCSI parts)

 1500Hz Kernel does have also problems, servers lagg like you would have a 
 ping of 500+ and tick starts pending between 80  100 (1 player+SourceTV).
 I also found no reason for that :(

 also it doesn´t matter wich server is on, happens on DM alone and normal 
 alon $ on both running together!


 Start lines for the servers are:

 For the *Normal* one:
 -port 27100 +map de_aztec +maxplayers 23 +fps_max 0 -tickrate 100

 For the DM:

IMHO you would be better off doing a scratch install on the windows machines
along with the mods you want then dragging maps and etc in. I have both a win
and linux box. I find the windows version easier to manage at times. Just make
sure you back up your admins list.

Ok, on a more serious note

1. Linux is only good to you if you have absolute 100% control over the box
the Operating System is running on. If you have to rely on somebody else,
you are pretty much stuffed. That is to say, you won't be playing with
Kernel timer resolutions or Kernel versions  or different distros for that
matter, unless you have this level of countrol, and all the advice that many
people will offer to you on how to optimise Linux for SRCDS will be wasted
on you.

2. Unless you are very familiar with Linux, you are going to be in a bit of
trouble compared to Windows. That is to say, Windows is a lot easier to
setup  tweak initially. If you are familiar with Linux, then the difference
is negligable.

3. For whatever reason, SRCDS seems to run with a lot less issues under
Windows than it does under Linux. This mailing list is a testament to that
fact.

4. It doesn't matter what OS you use, neither Linux nor Windows is going to
magically wring another 50% extra cpu out of your hardware. Either you have
good enough hardware to run SRCDS at the level you expect, or you do not.
The choice of OS will not make any significant difference, and any negative
perceived performance differences are more likely down to the experince and
skill of the server operator rather than any inherent difference in the
Operating Systems.

So in the end, Windows will cost you up front in dollars, but just about any
idiot can set it up to run SRCDS well, it is not hard. Linux will cost you
nothing up front, but MAY cost you a lot in time and effort if you are not
experienced in its setup  use. That is pretty much your choices.

P.S. I am not trying to scare you off Linux if you are prepared to put the
time and effort into learning how to set it up and use it. It would be a
commercially useful skill to have if you work in IT, so it is not a waste of
time for people who want to have this sort of career.
