This. And they can charge business customers or some rich residential
customers for static ip service. Then of course you have Dynamic DNS
services avoiding this problem, so (while not a perfect solution) it can
semi-bypass the problem.

Sadly, if it gets out of control, some servers may end up banning entire
IP ranges, which always results in innocent people getting banned.

if this is because of the port range change or an error in our firewall

Re: [hlds_linux] Team Fortress 2 Update Available

2010-07-02 Thread Jake Eisenman
Sorry guys, but racism and freedom of speech policies alone won't
determine the success or failure of a community, there are too many
other factors.

And, if yours is running fine with current policies, dont mess with a
good thing. What works, works.

 Then there is clan tags.

And Im with D3vilfish on this one. I dont tolerate bad language or
namecalling on our servers. It should be a pleasent game for
 everyone to
enjoy. And once the player understand this, they also mostly behave

after awhile they start to appropriate this as well. Our community

Clearly Valve is moving towards all games using the Steam profile

and they want you to change that if you'd like to change any game
names. I'd say the percentage of people this will negatively affect

quite minimal and overall it makes it easier for players to have 1

Either way, a discussion of morals isn't really conducive to this
topic nor really to the mailing list either.

Do you let women vote on your servers?

How about if somebody specs below the belt line.

Im glad we allow freedom of speach on our servers. Send me your ban

defends the rights of freedom of speach.

Does this now mean that Server Admins will not be able to change

names that are abusive or racist?
We have noticed since CSS went O/B that all rename plugins are
 broken and I
 presume TF2 aswell now.
Simiancage run family friendly servers, we have a no swearing
 policy
 and
abuse that includes dodgy names is not tolerated.
I can see our ban list growing at a alarming rate.

all skilled players can do it properly on 66.
it just makes it more difficult.

Also, TF2 has been with tickrate 66 since it's release, and you can
 bunnyhop
(but you don't gain much speed) and surf just fine too.

This is a joke right? In one fell swoop Bunny Hopping, Surfing, and
Strafing will effectively be killed (the decent servers, at least
 will
be). They just announced this the day before it's supposed to come
out, anyone know what's going on over there?

I'd be glad if it were so. But does really bhopping disappear with
tickrate 66? 1 tickrate simplifies testing but it doesn't help with
 anything on the client.

[hlds_linux] Mirrors

2010-05-05 Thread Jake Eisenman

With all the problems with slow updates recently, if I threw up a
server with links to the updates on RS/MU/MF etc would you all use it?

I'm merely offering a service, not trying to start a debate. So please
don't try to shove your random opinion into the convo, thanks.

Re: [hlds_linux] Looking for Fast Download Hosting

2010-04-24 Thread Jake Eisenman
I used the cheapest plan here: http://www.caratnetworks.com/vps.php
It's not Web hosting you just get a shell so you apt-get install apache2
vsftpd and configure yourself, if you know your way around linux it's a
really good deal... I usually got speeds between 1MB/s at peak times and
5MB/s at night.

back when we use to run a server, I had a fastdl server off my Dreamhost

I had a shell script that ran once a day (cron job) that fetched the latest
updates from the main server for mirroring.
DH is unlimited space and bandwidth and for me, it costs less than 8 bucks
(give or take...I usually pay once every few years)

I'm looking for a fast download host for custom content for my clan's
 game servers.

This is what I am looking for:

 4 GB storage space
 1 GB bandwidth per month
some way to upload and download files
basic web hosting (can just be an ip, no domain necessary, but I don't
want to have to pay for another domain, so it needs some kind of ip or
 url access)

If anyone knows where I could find something like this, or close to
this, reasonably priced (under $10/month) I'd be grateful.

Re: [hlds_linux] Old mani admin plugin download

2010-03-08 Thread Jake Eisenman
Long story, but its easier to run ma_mute #all 0 on event round_start
then to make a playerlist for everyone who died and unmute those.

It would only take a few minutes of coding, but... meh.

You don't need the older version.
