Re: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Available

2007-01-14 Thread Ondřej Hošek

As most obvious from the message headers of the first post (made by
Jason), he was cross-posting to [hlds], [hlds_linux] and
[hlds_announce]. In Windows parlance, since the binary steam.exe is
already taken, the updating program is called hldsupdatetool.exe. On
Linux, on the other hand, there was no steam, so steam is used for
the updating program and hldsupdatetool.bin is the self-extracting
archive with the license agreement and steam.

hldsupdatetool.bin has just about never been updated since steam can
auto-update itself since day 1. (It's nice that on Unix systems, you can
overwrite open files... even running programs. Sure, this can lead to
conflicts, but I just *hate* Sharing violation errors on Windows and
wish you could turn them off. If a Unix editor is good enough, it
creates locks and checks for them.)

Obviously, this is confusing. We Linux admins have learned that we have
to do the complementing guesswork each time... maybe it's because Valve
expects us to have more neurons since we're using Linux... or they think
we're third-class citizens. (Second-class: Windows admins, first-class:
Windows players.)

Hrm, try putting the beta parameter at the end of the command line. It

Nope, no luck. Tried with the beta command at the end, but same results.
Removed the ~/.steam/ClientRegistry.blob.
Steam retrieved version 18 of Steam HLDS Update Tool, but still no different
result. Same results as before. No beta version or other updates.
Even tried a different machine, but no luck.

Hi!
Does the updateRate mean the ACTUAL updaterate, or the fix cvar?
If it means the actual real updaterate, that the client becomes, does this
mean, that the interp buffer sets itself dynamically bigger, if the updaterate
drops, and then back again?

Alfred Reynolds írta:

cl_interp has been removed and replaced with cl_interp_ratio.

cl_interp_ratio sets the interpolation time to
cl_interp_ratio/updateRate. Added sv_min_cl_interp_ratio (default: 1.0)

The update rate determine by the server (after taking into account
maxrate/minrate and the users selected value). Yes, if the users update rate
changes then the interp amount will change.

A beta for the Source Engine has been released. To start a beta
server,
run hldsupdatetool with the command -beta scrmp0104. Current
clients
are compatible on a beta server, and beta clients are able to play on
current public servers. Changes for this beta include:

- Cheat protected many more cvars
- Replaced cl_interp with cl_interp_ratio. Server can limit it with
sv_min_cl_interp_ratio and sv_max_cl_interp_ratio
- Added sv_rcon_log to allow rcon logging to be disabled

We plan to release this next week, please provide feedback promptly.

Is there a brief explanation on the settings for cl_interp_ratio?

RE: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Available

2007-01-12 Thread Alfred Reynolds
cl_interp has been removed and replaced with cl_interp_ratio.

cl_interp_ratio sets the interpolation time to
cl_interp_ratio/updateRate. Added sv_min_cl_interp_ratio (default: 1.0)
and sv_max_client_interp_ratio (default: 2.0) to let the server bound
interp settings.

k...your statement says there is. If the new interp cvar isn't
affected by the server lockout on clients because it's in the core then
it stands to reason there is a line..unless an arbitrary decision is
made on a cvar by cvar basis as to what gets locked out of hte clients
and what doesn't?

Can we get a list of these new cheat protected cvars? I know many people
who wrote custom configs for low-end users
and people that like to optimize their game. I guess it could be just
tested out but hey, easier to ask.
