No error messages, printing test successful. No troubles with image printing or scanner as well (xsane sees the device perfectly). The problem is printing text documents. Open office and pdf documents are printed with no spaces between rows. I have attached an odt file and its printed version, you can check it yourselves. Also ttf files (opened with Eye of Gnome) cause problems: the sheet is printed completely black... Please give me some suggestions. Many thanks in advance. Re: [HPLIP-Devel] Gentoo manual HPLIP install hiccup
Shawn, We haven't done extensive testing with Gentoo. However this document may help you: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HPLIP Hope this helps. A On 5/17/07, Shawn Delahunty [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Folks, I've spent a VERY long day trying to track down a hiccup between CUPS and the HPLIP manual installation on my Gentoo boxes while doing other development work. Essentially, the problem symptoms were: 1) CUPS web-interface works fine. 2) HPLIP 'make install' seems to have run just fine. Running 'config' indicated no problems. 3) When adding a printer via the CUPS-web-interface (Officejet 6310), it sees the networked device (HP_OfficeJet_6300_series_192.9.200.13) on the Administration tab, and let's you Add This Printer just fine. Printing via HPIJS to that CUPS-entry works great. however--- 4a) If you try to Add Printer manually (Administration tab-Add Printer) 4b) then do the Device: AppSocket/HP JetDirect option **instead** of the HP_Officejet_series_6300_blah_blah_blah option... (the HPLIP Installation Instructions and various wikis tell you to pick the AppSocket option) 4c) then do the URI of hp:/net/Officejet_6300_series?ip=192.9.200.13 that the 'hp-makeuri' gives you... 4d) then pick Make:HP... - click Continue 4e) then pick Model: HP Officejet 6300 Foomatic/hpijs (en) - then click on the 'AddPrinter' button ... YOU GET AN ERROR! Bad device-uri hp:/net/Officejet_6300_series?ip=192.9.200.13! This also results in a bogus printer entry in /etc/cups/printers.conf which you CANNOT remove via the CUPS web interface. You have to edit the file manually to pull out the bogus entry, and then perform: /etc/init.d/cupsd restart I then fiddled about with the 'hp-setup' command line program, and found basically the same error: a bad or mal-formed URI. This basically indicated that the 'hp:' CUPS-backend was not installed. But yet the HPLIP 'make install' ran without a hitch! The really strange part was that handing the 'hpaio:/net/Officejet..blah..blah' URI to XSANE allowed me to scan from the Officejet! Hmmm...how could this be? To summarize, I had a CUPS-legal entry using the 'socket://192.9.200.13' URI, and *SOMEHOW* the hpaio:/net/Office..blah..blah URI was working with 'xsane', but the 'hp:/' and 'hpfax:/' URI's were screwed. SOLUTION: I finally figured out what was happening. The 'hp' ELF and 'hpfax' Python-script were being installed into: /usr/lib/cups/backend HOWEVER, on my Gentoo install, they **NEED** to be located in: /usr/libexec/cups/backed Once I'd figured this out, two quick symlinks fixed my headache. I could then install via CUPS and the 'AppSocket/HP JetDirect' option, and the 'hp-setup' program was able to function properly as well. NOTES: I have not deviated from the Gentoo standard ebuild/layout (too much) as I built these systems, so I'm assuming someone else may run into this headache. I think it would be advisable to add this bit about the symlinks to your Manual Install pages on the HPLIP home-site for Gentoo. It should also be possible to add a check to the 'make install' option for this condition, and create the symlinks automatically. Hope this saves someone the grey hair I earned today. Thanks for making an overall GREAT piece of software though. I truly appreciate your efforts. -Shawn - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. No limits. Just data. Lfs does not use 'daemon' at all, but 'pidofproc' in stead. --disable-network-build: if you do not have net-snmp installed. --disable-pp-build: if your printers do not connect to the parallel port. Next, as root: ^ # export HPLIP_DIR=/usr/local/Hplip-1.7.1 # mkdir -p $HPLIP_DIR/bin # make install Explanations: ^^^ You need to do the 'mkdir' bit because hplip will not create the 'bin' directory and installation will fail as a result. If you install in /usr/local or /usr this would not be a problem. Now you need to configure for hplip (still as root): ^^^ # chmod 0744 $HPLIP_DIR/share/hplip/hplip # cd /etc/rc.d/init.d # ln -s $HPLIP_DIR/share/hplip/hplip hplip # cd ../rc0.d # ln -s ../init.d/hplip K01hplip # cd ../rc3.d # ln -s ../init.d/hplip S24hplip # cd ../rc5.d # ln -s ../init.d/hplip S24hplip # cd ../rc6.d # ln -s ../init.d/hplip K01hplip # cd /usr/bin # ln -s $HPLIP_DIR/bin/hpijs hpijs # cd ../lib/sane # ln -s $HPLIP_DIR/lib/libsane-hpaio.* . Find the path in /dev to the printer. This is done by ls /dev and looking for the usb/ directory, for example. Suppose the path is /dev/usb/lp0 Edit /etc/profile and add the line export SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE=hpaio:/dev/usb/lp0 Then run the command # . /etc/profile To /etc/ld.so.conf add the line /usr/local/Hplip-1.7.1/lib and run the command # ldconfig Finally, # unset HPLIP_DIR Explanations -- The 'hplip' binary as installed is not executable, hence the chmod step. -- The lfs-setup has 'init.d' in a place different from what the installation procedure expects. We have to make a symlink in 'init.d' to where 'hplip' is. -- The symlinks set up in the rc.{0,1,3,5,6} directories will activate the two hplip daemons at boot time and bring them down at shutdown time. It is important to note that these daemons must be activated before the 'cups' daemon and shut down after the 'cups' daemon. Thus the numbers 'xy' in the 'Sxy' links must preceed those for 'cups'. The 'xy' in 'Kxy' must be larger than those for cups. So have a good look at what goes on in the 'rc.n' directories. -- It is important to have a link in /usr/bin to the 'hpijs' binary. Without this link 'cups' will get lost. That is one reason why installation of 'hplip' in /usr is recommended. -- Sane will look for the 'libsane-hpaio' libraries in /usr/lib/sane. So we have to establish a link. Without these links scanning at least with 'xscanimage' will not work. The final dot in the command line should not be left out. -- The environment variable SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE will make 'xscanimage' work from wherever it is called. This really is a nice thing to do! -- Having 'ldconfig' make the hplip libraries visible to the system may be of importance to software that leans on hplip. You may now follow the hplip documentation

This is documented. http://hplip.sourceforge.net/faqs.html Here is the process: tar xzvf hpip-version.tar.gz cd hplip-version/prnt/hpijs ./configure --prefix=/usr make make install Hope this helps! Re: [HPLIP-Devel] Full-bleed printing on HP Officejet 4200er All-in-One Series
Thomas, This will be updated in the next release. Sorry for the inconvenience. A On 1/17/07, Thomas Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I use hplip-1.6.10 printing with two printers, first is a HP Officejet 5605z All-in-One, second a HP Officejet 4212 All-in-One. Lately I tried to print some photos on both printers, and I wanted an want flull-bleed photos 15x10 cm (6x4 in). With the OJ 5605z it workes just fine, but the OJ 4212 was resisting the collaboration. I was a litte bit annoyed, since the list of supported printers (http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/inkjet_aio.html ) says, the OJ 4200er series depends to printer class DJ3600 and the Technical Documentation ( http://hplip.sourceforge.net/tech_docs/device_classes.html) says, that printers which depend to printer class DJ3600 likely support full-bleed printing for certain paper sizes ( i.e. for paper 15x10cm/6x4in full-bleed printing is supported!). So I looked in the ppd-file for the OJ4200er (HP-OfficeJet_4200-hpijs.ppd) supplied by HPLIP 1.6.10 and I found out, that here the printer class DJ3320 is used for it. So I tried to patch the ppd-file and (surprise?) it worked (with my OJ 4212)! I attached the patch for evaluating it by you an maybe apply it to the next version of HPLIP. What do you think about it?
