Itschak,

The result of course is that you will *need* more free space satisfying
Primary allocation with large contiguous extents, than if you use
allocation
recovery software built into SMS, or better still a third party product.

My experience is that the 3rd party products allow me to run at 10-15%
Freespace, whereas I needed 30-40% and a lot of JCL amendments without.
One
site had 2-3 space abends a night and needed daily DEFRAGS just to
survive.
After fine tuning ACC/SRS we were down to less than two space abends a
month
and reclaimed 20% of the Batch Storgrup.

And of course never ending JCL amendments went away...

But to your question, the only product I can think of that will do what
you
want is LDMF, which will mean migrating the fragmented dataset(s) onto
another volume. Net/net you may as well allocate the datasets that are
failing allocation on the other volume and defrag that volume when they
are
closed.

 Hello Ron,

 The problem is indeed in allocation, usually on the first allocation
 unit
 (DS creation). I don't want StopX or other [product to resize it. I
 want to
 have free space. If space is stripped, I want to reclaim the space
into
 contiguous area. The problem is that many datasets on the volume are
in
 use
 and are not moved.

   Defrag (DSS) is not a much help if part of the datasets on the
 volume
   are
   in-use. I wonder if there is a defrag product that can use
hardware
   technologies (I'll accept software solutions as well ;-) ) to re-
 map
   moved

   weekends

   CICS, you
   can't stop the databases and defrag is not much helpful. Thanks

Re: SMP No ++MCS Question

2008-09-16 Thread Kurt Quackenbush
I'm using the SMP JCL below to try to install the associated sysmod
which is currently in the PTS and getting the errors below.

I'm trying to resolve: HCI6500 ERROR FUNCTION HCI6500 HOLDE
*AK48164

Its not at all clear to me how you get the above output when trying to
apply a PTF. The above output suggests you are applying FUNCTION SYSMOD
HCI6500. If so, are you following the instructions from the Program
Directory? The Program Directory should tell you to apply the FMID
something like this slimmed down example:

APPLY S(HCI6500) CHECK
FORFMID(HCI6500)
BYPASS(HOLDCLASS(HIPER)).

The important points here are:
- BYPASS for HIPER errors, which will allow HCI6500 to be applied
without being held for AK48164.
- FORFMID(HCI6500) will drag all PTFs for that FMID into the APPLY, thus
likely resolving the hold for AK48164.

HOWEVER, you should analyze any unresolved and bypassed HIPERs
(including AK48164) to determine if the problem and fix is something you
should be concerned with in your specific environment.

Your MOD name matches your SRC, which is XJ01USEP, right? Therefore,
thats the name you should specify as the CSECT, not ZJO1USEP. Then
SMP/E will build GENASM subentries in the XJO1USEP MOD entry.

ESOTERIC tokens

I ran the IBM tool SYS1.SAMPLIB(IEFESO) in prep for using tokens in my IODF,

VOLUMES
  VOLSERDASD00 DEVTYPE--X'0130200F' FSEQN---

turns out these are datasets unique to FDRABR, when a dataset is deleted it
keeps its reference to it by the prefix of #.

So I'm thinking I don't care about these for what I'm doing ? I have done
(several) IPCS LISTEDT LUV's on all lpar's and don't find that entry
anywhere in the active systems. just my paranoia ...

Re: TAPE ACCESS

2008-09-16 Thread Linda Mooney
When a range is added through TMSFORMT to CA1, that range is in DELETE status
until the TMSDELET is run with a ADD card for the volser range. Until that is
done, the volsers will not be available for use.

//UPDATE   EXEC PGM=TMSDELET
//*
//STEPLIB  DD  DSN=your.cailib,DISP=SHR
//TMSRPT   DD  SYSOUT=(,),OUTPUT=*.SYSMSG
//SYSINDD  *   *** CONTROL CARDS FOLLOW THIS CARD ***
ADD V30010-V32999
/*

Additionally, the TRTCH field may need to be updated if your CA1 default tape
type is different from the type of the new tapes (real or emulated). Use
TMSUPDTE for that. I also update several of the other fields, it helps to
track where tapes came from or where they are assigned, their birthdate, etc.

In this example, our default is for 18 track tape. These volumes are 36 track,
so I had to run the update for them to be useable as scratch tapes. If your
PPOPTIONS are set to allow density changes within the type, then you only need
to set the TRTCH field to something in the correct track type, otherwise you
will need the precise value.

//UPDATE   EXEC PGM=TMSUPDTE,
// PARM='NODSN,AUDIT'
//STEPLIB  DD  DSN=your.cailib,DISP=SHR
//TMSRPT   DD  SYSOUT=(,),OUTPUT=*.SYSMSG
//SYSINDD  *   *** CONTROL CARDS FOLLOW THIS CARD ***

 We were sharing an ATL with Tivoli - then Tivoli moved out so now we can
 use those abandoned tapes. VOL=SER=99 - 990029

 The ATL has been un-partitioned.
 TMS (CA-1) has been extended and the range added to the Scratch member in

 They are also in SYS1.VOLCAT.VGENERAL (Catalog)
 The tapes are display-able in ISMF, but do not show up when we issue:

I use the SoftCopy Librarian. You can get it from
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/df/ebrsclwj.exe

It can be used to download the manuals to a repository that includes
whatever manuals and shelves you choose. You can put them on CD if you like.

and what is the best software to read the CDs with nowadays.

There's a lot of disagreement about this one. I like the softcopy reader.

More information about both of these is available at
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/softcopy/

There is a link to it on the z/OS library page.

Defining Page Datasets on RESCUE Pack

2008-09-16 Thread Eric Bielefeld
I am trying to create a One Pack system, and I'm having a hard time defining
the Page datasets. This was very simple when I could use a STEPCAT dd, but
since I'm on z/OS 1.7, I can't.

I followed an example in the book Access Method Services for Catalogs. It
had me define an alias in the master catalog. Then I defined the pagespaces
using that alias as the high level qualifier. Then I renamed the dataset to
the proper name. This does'nt work. I get a the following messages:

 DEF ALIAS (NAME(ONEPACK) RELATE(CATALOG.FLCRES.MSTRCAT))
IDC0001I FUNCTION COMPLETED, HIGHEST CONDITION CODE WAS 0

 DEF PAGESPACE (NAME(ONEPACK.FLCRES.LPA) VOL(FLCRES) FILE(DISK) -
   CYLINDERS(1) UNIQUE) -
   CATALOG(CATALOG.FLCRES.MSTRCAT)
IDC3171I CATALOG PARAMETER NOT ALLOWED ON DEFINE PAGESPACE UNLESS
IDC3171I RECATALOG SPECIFIED
IDC2954I STATIC TEXT ENTRY REQUESTED NOT IN MODULE
IDC3003I FUNCTION TERMINATED. CONDITION CODE IS 12

Does anyone have any examples of defining a new master catalog for a one pack
system, and then defining page spaces in that catalog. I downloaded 4 files
from the CBT site, and all of them still use STEPCAT.

Thanks,

Eric

You shouldn't need the CATALOG parameter, since you've defined an alias in
your production system. You don't need UNIQUE either. That's for VSAM
catalogs.

Lindy,
The DQE's are a continuous linked list, where the last entry points back
to
the list head address.
So if SPQAFADQ = @SPQAFADQ then this is an empty entry. Else, you have
DQE's for this subpool, in which case you would process the DQE. When
the
DQENEXT contains the address of SPQAFADQ you are done. Note that while
you
are processing FQE's within a DQE, the FQE's are chained the same way.
Why
SHOWZOS only looks at three, I don't know.

The '#.dsname' entries are FDRABR entries of datasets that have been deleted
that allow FDRABR to recover the dataset from a backup. They are created
during scratch processing when you have the ABR DADSM exit installed.

The ABR utility program FDRABRCM is used to perform maintenance on these
entries and remove the expired ones and should be run periodically. Sample
JCL to PURGE the ABR scratch catalog entries where backups no longer exist
is:

//PURGEEXEC PGM=FDRABRCM,REGION=0M
//SYSPRINT DD  SYSOUT=*
//ABRMAP   DD  SYSOUT=*
//SYSUDUMP DD  SYSOUT=*

Re: ARC0560E MIGRATION LIMITED: NO TAPE MIGRATION VOLUME

FYI, this problem was caused by an erroneous change to our ACS routines that
caused the allocation of a tape drive to fail - no other messages were issued
and the message explanation for this message does not mention allocation
problems at all.

IBM was able to shed some light on the problem after seeing the allocation
errors in the PDA log.

Thanks to all who tried to help ;-)

 Scott Rowe [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9/15/2008 4:48 PM
Anyone seen this:
ARC0560E MIGRATION LIMITED: NO TAPE MIGRATION VOLUME AVAILABLE?

We just started getting this after re-starting HSM. This causes HSM to no
longer try to migrate datasets to level 2. I have tried to release migration,
but the message just re-appears, I can find no reason why this is happening.
If we don't get this fixed, we will run out of space in our TMM storage pool by
morning.

I have checked the message doc, but I can't locate a reason for this failure,
has anyone seen this and have any ideas?

TIA,

Scott

Eric, what I've always done is this:

1. DEFINE the new page files in the current MCAT.

2. REPRO MERGECAT to move the entries to the desired new MCAT.

3. ALTER NEWNAME as needed to get the desired names.

In general, I've never needed the third step, but I've used it often
enough that I include it in this list.

Sorry, Roland, I realized a minute after sending that I should have been
more clear.

I was experimenting with both methods. SHOWZOS compares the last ones
on the queue (ie SPQALBDQ) before getting DQENEXT. As you pointed out
that method works.

Wayne suggested to get DQENEXT and then compare that to the first one on
the queue (ie SPQAFADQ). This works sometimes, but sometimes after
making a round, in between the first DQE and the last DQE there is the
SPQA control block.

I wasn't sure how/why the SPQA snuck in between my DQE's.  I thought I'd
ask before turning in to avoid any bad dreams about the situation. (-:

As Mark indicated, the only way to put a page dsn on a different system,
since the loss of stepcat, is to use a SSA to define it then rename it
(can't remember if a rename is need, ie the name in the other system

Incorrect! You can do the following. Assume that the current MCAT is
MCAT.SY1 and you need the PAGESPACE in MCAT.SY2. The following IDCAMS input
will work!

DEF PAGESPACE(NAME(PAGE.SY2.PLPA) -
 FILE(VOLSER) CYLINDERS(64) VOLUME(VOLSER))

DEF PAGESPACE(NAME(PAGE.SY2.PLPA) -
 RECATALOG FILE(VOLSER) VOLUME(VOLSER)) -
 CAT(MCAT.SY2)

There is special code in DFSMSdfp to allow a PAGESPACE to be defined in
multiple catalogs simultaneously! In addition, any VSAM dataset which has an
HLQ of SYS1 can be cataloged in multiple catalogs too. I HAVE DONE THIS!

This is how I move my page and SMF datasets to my new system when I do a
complete system replacement. It does work. Try it! You'll like it!

Re: Looping through SPQA/DQE's

2008-09-16 Thread Roland Schiradin
Lindy,

no problem. Years ago a teacher told me There are no bad questions just bad
answers however sometimes you have to do your homework before asking a
simple question. In your case I recommend the #SNAP macro to get a better
view of all releated data in dump format. I use this very often to analyze
problems while running SHOWzOS. For a new display I wrote a small assembler
driver before merging the code into SHOWzOS.

Roland

DDNAME SYSADATA should be the SYSADATA output of an assembly of the desired
usermod.
DDNAME IGNORMAC is just an input file listing macros you wish to exclude from
the output file.

Like I said, it's still pretty quick and dirty, and does what I wanted.

I still haven't got all this put together, now I'm getting :

GIM43401WASSEMBLY XJ01USEP IN SYSMOD JES2001 WAS NOT INSTALLED IN ANY TARGET
 LIBRARY.

And as far as I can tell (must have my blinders on :), I'm following the
examples in 17.3.6 and 7 from GIMUSR36.boo almost exactly.
