Transactions per Watt
Great article suggesting Measure transactions/wattif you don't measure it, you can't improve it IBM should jump on this since this is a strength of z/OS transaction workloads and zLinux server consolidation. I have not seen any statements of power efficiency on a transaction/watt metric. http://www.addsimplicity.com/adding_simplicity_an_engi/2007/01/compute_power _i.html -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Re: Mainframe vs. Server (Was Just another example of mainframe costs.)
I realize that this is not constructive, but the url below is an ad for Windows 386. It does make the point that Micrsoft spoke to the customer's need for IT empowerment. z/OS zLinux still do not have a compelling empowerment message. You can't sell someone a product if they don't percieve a need. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4915875929930836239; -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Re: Just another example of mainframe costs.
Many hardware and software vendors maximize profits by promoting server solutions verus mainframe. SAS is an interesting software vendor to extend this inquiry to. Does SAS maximize profits by not licensing their products to Linux for zSeries? On the hardware side, do DASD vendors maximize profits by promoting server solutions where there is a lack of hierarchical storage management versus mainframe. In both cases I believe profits are maximized by promoting server solutions. If true, then part of the mainframe cost dilemma is mainframe solutions are not as profitable for hardware and software vendors and therefore they will promote the server solution. FYIW. Re: Oracle on System z.
You may want to check out the zSeries Oracle Special Interest Group. The International zSeries Oracle SIG is a loosely organized group of companies that have a license for Oracle on z/OS and Linux on the zSeries hardware. There are no membership fees or obligations. Communications are done through Oracle mailings, emails and this website. http://www.zseriesoraclesig.org/ http://www.zseriesoraclesig.org/presentations.shtml -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
SAS for Linux on zSeries
It appears that SAS runs quite well on Linux for zSeries. However, SAS DOES NOT HAVE A LICENSE generally available for Linux on zSeries due to the lack of interest from their customers. I find that quite amazing, that the zSeries community does not have interest in running SAS on Linux for zSeries. The following URL is a November 2005 cross post from the Archives of IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU where they provide a like to express your interest to SAS. http://listserv.uark.edu/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind0511L=ibmvmT=0P=55089 -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
