This is the title of a new this month IBM Techdocs White Paper,
WP101091, by Gregory Hutchison, a PDF of which can be downloaded from
the IBM Techdocs website.

Some of you may well find his discussion of the distinction between
the insertion (or, in principle, removal) of a leap second

1) by steering, which accomplishes the insertion|removal incrementally
over a period of about 7 hours, or

2) by spinning on a lock for a full second, which does it in one gulp,

helpful.

Be aware that the next leap-second insertion will be at 11:59:59 UTF
on 30 June 2012.

tyvm, Timothy, for your expert analysis.

Please pardon my ignorance, but what is a PCI?

PCI has to do with Payments for Credit Cards and their security.

The PCI Security Standards Council offers robust and comprehensive
standards and supporting materials to enhance payment card data
security. These materials include a framework of specifications, tools,
measurements and support resources to help organizations ensure the safe
handling of cardholder information at every step. The keystone is the
PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), which provides an actionable
framework for developing a robust payment card data security process --
including prevention, detection and appropriate reaction to security
incidents.

For device vendors and manufacturers, the Council provides the PIN
Transaction Security (PTS) requirements, which contains a single set of
requirements for all personal identification number (PIN) terminals,
including POS devices, encrypting PIN pads and unattended payment
terminals. A list of approved PIN transaction devices can be accessed
here.

To help software vendors and others develop secure payment applications,
the Council maintains the Payment Application Data Security Standard
(PA-DSS) and a list of Validated Payment Applications.

The Council also provides training to professional firms and individuals
so that they can assist organizations with their compliance efforts. The
Council maintains public resources such as lists of Qualified Security
Assessors (QSAs), Payment Application Qualified Security Assessors
(PA-QSAs), and Approved Scanning Vendors (ASVs). Large firms seeking to
educate their employees can take advantage of the Internal Security
Assessor (ISA) education program.

Given a load library and a list of member names, I want to be able to
perform these steps in a batch assembler program:

1) Load a program load module into storage
2) Determine if the program is COBOL or something else (the only other thing
it would likely be is assembler)
3) If COBOL, access the compile timestamp. From casual observation this
appears to be in the form of MMDDHHSS and prefixed with the PROGRAM-ID.

I assume a standard LOAD can be used to load the module into storage for
inspection. The questions are:

1) Is there a sure-fire way to determine if the loaded program is COBOL?
2) How do I navigate to the COBOL compile timestamp?

The programs only need to be identified as Enterprise COBOL or not.

Thanks for any tips, pointers, and references you can provide.

We just implmeneted (it is only a couple of days old) the STP on our

We have an application dependent on LOCAL time. So when the clock
changes on Nov 6, we think this application will see 1am twice and have
problems.

So, is this correct, that if we do not use an IPL the STP will adjust
the mainframe at 2am to 1am? In which case my bad application will see
the 1am hour again.

If so, then I think our only option would be to shutdown the LPARs at
1am (12:59) and then when it is the time, IPL so that 1am is only seen
once by this application. The application itself cannot be down for 1
hour. POLITICS.

Anybody have any other thoughts or comments?

Re: IPL abend z/os 1.8

2011-09-20 Thread Field, Alan C.
I think you need to define a SYS1.DUMPnn dataset.

Are you using dynamically allocated dump datasets (probably defined in
SYS1.PARMLIB(COMMNDxx)?

Since this abend is so early in the IPL that won't work.

There's probably some other change you'll need to make to go back to
using static DUMP datasets.

We are trying to IPL an z/OS 1.8 to update it to support a z10 machine.
Today it is running over an z890. During IPL
we got following abend:

DUMP

We already tried a lot of tricks, but no one get success. Even system is

asking for DUMPDS command to delete

Any hint about these problems?

Re: 3490 TAPE DRIVE SAYS 349L ???

2011-08-30 Thread Field, Alan C.
Did you look up the explanation if the IEE457I message?

xxxS where xxx represents the first three digits of device type

  (for example, '348' for a 3480 or '349' for a 3490) and 'S'

means the device has a cartridge stack loader.

xxxL | xxxM where xxx represents the first three digits of a device

  type (for example, '348' for a 3480 or '349' for a 3490).

'L' means the device is ATL resident, and 'M' means the

  device is MTL resident.

Note: If a device is both a library device and has a

cartridge stack loader, the L or M designation takes

 precedence over the S designation.

Chip, what does your enviroment look like? I don't know of any documents
specifically describing how to. I have my own procedure that avoids the out of
sync. I have 3 stand alone lpars and two 2 lpar parallel sysplexes on two cecs.
I have one iocds. Its on a dasd device shared by all lpars. I make all changes
on the sysprog lpar. I then do a h/w and s/w activate. I do a h/w and s/w
activate from an lpar on the other cec. I then do s/w activates on all
remaining lpars. Since following this processs i haven't had a problem.

Can someone point me to some good reading on keeping them in sync?

$TA 4

Can you log on opt the HMC? You can also see the storage assigned to the

Hi,

I am trying to make some adjustements to the Coupling Facility based
on
some recent performance issues, but have a concern that I cannot seem to

find a display to provide me with the total storage available. I can get
a lot of
information about the various structures, but I would like to know how
much
physical storage is available for use. It's possible I'm looking right
at it on one
or more displays, but it's not clear to me where that information is
displayed.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I can determine the

actual storage in a given CF?

OPI=Yes means operator can override any of the parameter specified in

I'm being asked one more time by TPTB to determine how the HMC System
Console is actually being used by z/OS customers:

1) How many of you have used to it in an emergency as the console of
last
resort?

2) How many of you have used it to recover OSA attached consoles?

3) How many of you have no locally-attached consoles and use the System
Console to IPL and get you through NIP before transitioning to SMCS
consoles
(or some other console support requiring Comm Server to be up)?

zOS 1.8 and z196s

2011-03-18 Thread Field, Alan C.
Is any one running zOS1.8 on a z196? It's on z9s now. Will it even run
on a z196?

I know it's unsupported. We've got some neglected LPARs that suddenly a
z196 looks attractive.

Thanks,

Dick,

We've been doing this for a number of months. We have a 2094-704 that we
dedicated one CPU to our sysprog lpar (so we didn't need to create a
parking lpar). It seems to be working to hold down the costs on the
other production lpars.

Re: ISMF QUESTION - DATA SET NAMES TRUNCATED

2011-02-23 Thread Field, Alan C.
This is what placing the cursor on the datasetname heading and pressing PF1
says. I think you want unfolded (however you accomplish that). An exercise left
to the reader :)

Alan

The value in this data column represents the data
set name of each data set in the list. The
DATA SET NAME can be up to 44 characters long.
The data column can be 27 or 44 characters long.
If the list is in folded mode and the data set
name is longer than 27 characters, the extra
characters appear on a second line. Multi-volume
data sets contain one entry in the list for each
unique volume serial number on which the data set
resides.

Any hints as to where I can start to see how the CICSCONS name is setup for

When I package support files for course labs, I have
for many years used XMIT, then download as binary to
my workstation. Over the years Xmit manager has been
a valuable tool to examine such files.

Today I wanted to look at member in a PDS in XMIT
format and Xmit manager gives these messages:

---
An error has occurred while decoding the xmit file!
 Error while decoding

and the Details:

End of directory block should contain 12 binary zeros

Information obtained at the point of error:
Current xmit record length is 255 bytes
Current xmit record type is x00
Current file offset is 3720
  Xmit File size is 572400

Use the Debug option to provide a format dump of the xmit file for
further
diagnosis.

The Debug option didn't help me.

I repeated the process, just to make sure everything
was correct, but got the same error sequence.

The XMIT file is good (a RECEIVE unpacks the file just fine).

I also tried opening some other files in using Xmit manager
and they opened fine.

Any suggestions?

Subject: 3270 Emulator Software

I just went through the archives looking for generic information on 3270
emulators.  There is a lot but no specific to my requirements.

So here goes.

What are - say - the top 5 emulators everyone uses out there.

I have in my list so far

Hummingbird
Bluezone
HOD (Host on Demand - IBM) - an I am not sure what other software is
required to run this (Websphere or other?)
!Extra
Pcomm
Rumba

However, I was wondering if there were others.

My requirements are support (well supported), cost, encryption and usage
across a wide platform (z/OS, Linux, Windows, etc...).  And it has to be
deployed via Citrix.

I am not sure what anyone else is using out there for this type of
software.  I love Vista3270 but I am not sure that my company will even look
at it.

Is there a preference out there or is it just a random acquisition - kinda
like I like the pink one?

Or does someone have an evaluation analysis write up on this type of
software that they would be willing to share?

I am not usually in the front in the RFP but this time I am and it would
help me to know what to look for when selecting a 3270 emulator.

Thanks

Eric,

They can be on any volume of your choosing. If local convention dictates
the master catalog volume that'd be true.

Look for a volume with a SYS1.PAGEDUMP.Vnnn dataset. The SAD build
doesn't catalog these. I modify the AMDSADMP macro so they are cataloged
on my system.

How many different date formats are there? There's the hardware
timestamp, in two forms (original, with the 2046 rollover, and the
extended one -- what is that, a STCKE instruction?). There's something
called an Oracle format date. There's some UNIX format that rolls
over in 2034 or some such (tsk, with an epoch of 1970 -- they sure
weren't planning ahead!), too.

Not to mention yy/mm/dd, mm/dd/yy, dd/mm/yy, with 2- and 4-digit
dates, varying separators (or no separators: mmdd et al.), with
and without leading zeroes (when there are separators: today as
8/13/2010 vs. 08/13/2010). And of course (the misnamed) Julian format.

Rexx has a few others, but they're conveniences, like the number of
days this year -- I don't really consider that a date format, though
it's useful sometimes.

What others are there? I'm working on something that will flexibly
handle dates, and while I'm not sure I'll handle every format
possible, I'd at least like to make the decision based on a pretty
complete set of possible formats.

Re: JES2 MAS member restriction

Some ideas:
1 - Set up SCHEDULING ENVIRONMENTS in WLM and use that to steer the jobs
to the appropriate LPARs

2 - Set up initiators so that only certain classes are defined on PRD3

This presumes you aren't using all 36 classes already and could define
some uniquely to PRD3/4.

3 - Use /*JOBPARM SYSAFF=PRD3 to ensure the jobs run only on the

workload could run on the new ones. We have WLM and IRD working on our

Basically we would like to segment or restrict JOBs (Batch or TSO) from

Any idea on how to accomplish this? Any inputs would be really

In order to keep track of the few tapes I use, without covering
my walls with Post-Its identifying volsers, when possible I append
a small data set at the end of each with a data set name
identifying the purpose and creation date.

Then I can look up the data set in DSLIST to find the volser.

Can I catalog such a handle data set after the fact? Sure:
DISP=(,CATLG),LABEL=(n+1,SL),EXPDT=98000,VOL=SER=copy from Post-It.
Can I do it without ever causing the tape to be mounted, perhaps
from ISPF 3.4 or 3.2 or with LM services?

If I can do this only with an assembler program, it's easier for
me to mount the tape.

PRO/JCL says that the override PARAMETER needs to be QUOTED.  This would
require changing the JCL.

Any other ideas on how to burn off the ORPHANED SYMBOLIC?

Re: How to define couple links using HCD

2010-04-12 Thread Field, Alan C.
Have you read the two manuals Server Time Protocol Planning Guide and
Server Time Protocol Implementation Guide?

Are you running a Parallel Sysplex and need the CF lpars?

You may have wasted money as you can define TIMER ONLY links.

I haven't looked at the books for some time however they should cover
everything you need to implement STP.

Could you help us to define the couple links using HCD for it. Thanks a

We have a batch job that uses the COMMAND program to issue commands.

One of the uses is to issue 580 V ,ONLINE commands. These are
directed to one menber of a SYSPLEX (no ROUTE command involved).

The user complains that sometimes some of the commands don't execute, as
witnessed by a subsequent job failing because one or more of the volumes

Can anyone shed any light on command processing? Is there a limit after
which commands are just thrown away?

Re: REPOST with Subject: COMMAND processing limit??

2010-04-12 Thread Field, Alan C.
Thanks everybody. The reminders about CMDS, console restructure etc are
what I wasn't remembering.

I did see a bunch of these messages in the SYSLOG:

IEE318I D20C CANNOT BE VARIED ONLINE - VOLUME CANNOT BE READ

IEE318I D20B CANNOT BE VARIED ONLINE - VOLUME CANNOT BE READ

The volumes belong to the PROD lpars and the intent is to put them
online to the DEV lpars for some sort of database backup or copy.

The IEE318I explanation says issue the VARY again.

I didn't see any IEE065I COMMAND NOT EXECUTED, CMD=command messages so
perhaps initially I was barking up the wrong tree.

Re: SYSPLEX/CFRM Couple dataset(s) relationship

2010-04-08 Thread Field, Alan C.
Mark, I don't know but we used to run into the same problem at DR until
we started defining our CFRM policy with 4 CFs.

CF1 and CF2 are the ones at home. CF3 and CF4 are the ones at DR.

I define the policies with a preflist of (CF1,CF2,CF3,CF4).

Now when we're at home or DR IPL proceeds without a hitch.

I think I got the idea for doing this from a post on this list a few
years ago.

At our last DR exercise we had an incorrect CPU serial number in our
CFRM policy which resulted in a failure in our IPL. We fixed the CFRM
policy and re-wrote it replacing the incorrect policy (same policy
name).

When we re-ipled, the system was still looking for the CF lpar with the
incorrect CPU serial number even though the CFRM policy with the old
serial number wasn't in the CFRM dataset. We couldn't get the system to
IPL until I deleted and redefined the SYSPLEX couple dataset.

Does the sysplex couple dataset retain information about the CFRM policy

in use other than the name of the last used CFRM policy?

The joblog during IPL looks:

IEF403I IEESYSAS - STARTED - TIME=03.47.40

IEF677I WARNING MESSAGE(S) FOR JOB JES2 ISSUED

IEF452I JES2 - JOB NOT RUN - JCL ERROR

All the datasets referred in Jes2 proc are cataloged in Master catalog
by
using IDCAMS listcat.

SYS1.SHASLNKE has listed in PROGxx, and APFed.

Storage volume has been specified in VATLSTxx.

Both null SMS configuration and none SMS environment have tried.

Both VLF, LLA, DLF, RACF has started.

From IEF677I, it seems system found some error and used a system

But where is it? Can we got some additional message from other ways?

Thanks for your time.

Re: increase central storage to an lpar

2010-01-21 Thread Field, Alan C.
The only way to add storage is to update the IMAGE profile for the LPAR
and then shut down the LPAR. Be sure to DEACTIVATE (from the HMC) the
LPAR and then IPL.

If the memory isn't available the activate will fail.

And coincidently in another thread Don Williams says:

Use HMC to go to Single Object Operations. From there go to Storage
Information in CPC Operational Customization.

Depending on your processor model you might not have 16G available. HSA
on z9 and earlier processors is taken from the total storage.

Use the HMC to see how much available storage you have to play with. I
think the max HSA on a z9 is 2.5G - that's how much I take out before
allocating the rest to LPARs.

The only way to add storage is to update the IMAGE profile for the LPAR
and then shut down the LPAR.
Be sure to DEACTIVATE (from the HMC) the LPAR and then IPL.

There is another way, requiring pre-work, and one
deactivate/activate/re-IPL.

That's assigning reserved memory (RSVD).
How much depends on granularity, defined by how much memory is
installed.

See the PR/SM planning guide.

But, if you haven't set it up, it still requires a de/re-activate
sequence.

Interesting. The one very odd thing this system does is that it
declares it's output files as EXTERNAL. A main program will open the
file and write the first line and then call a subprogram. The
subprogram also has the file as EXTERNAL.

I was able to recreate it with the following program and subprogram:

Main program:

process noadv
identification division.
program-id. noadv.
environment division.
input-output section.
file-control.
select report-1 assign to report1.

data division.
file section.
fd report-1 external
recording mode f.
01 report-1-record.
05 report-1-cc pic x.
05 report-1-data pic x(132).
procedure division.
open output report-1
move all '-' to report-1-data
write report-1-record after advancing page
call 'noadvsub'
close report-1
goback.
end program noadv.

Sub program:
process noadv
identification division.
program-id. noadvsub.
environment division.
input-output section.
file-control.
select report-1 assign to report1.

05 report-1-cc pic x.
05 report-1-data pic x(132).
procedure division.
move all '1' to report-1-data
write report-1-record after advancing 1
move all '2' to report-1-data
write report-1-record after advancing 2
move all '3' to report-1-data
write report-1-record after advancing 1
move all '4' to report-1-data
write report-1-record after advancing 0
move all '5' to report-1-data
write report-1-record
goback.
end program noadvsub.

Still very strange, though. Any thoughts as to why this is?

Thanks,
Frank

The cpus defined as CF (specialty) engines ONLY run the CF code, so
there is no gain to you SYSA/B/C/D lpars.

Are you running a parallel sysplex?

Also I think the GP engines are in one pool, and the CF engines in

Both CPU Engines are online across all LPAR's.

100 MIPS for SYCF1 and

SYSA is UNCAPPED and SYSB, SYSC and SYSD are CAPPED.

Recently we are having issues related to MIPS capacity.

I am aware that in case SYSA needs more capacity then it can take from
SYSB,SYSC,SYSD if available.

However, was wondering whether system will allow to take MIPS from
Coupling Facility LPAR's as well or not if available ?

These are the structures in use for CF

Is there any advantage in getting rid of these coupling facility ?
Will that give us comfort ofhaving these additional MIPS ?

No, HCD doesn't populate the IPL address.

In the LOAD profile on the HMC you either specify the IPL device address
or check the DYNAMIC box.

Checking the DYNAMIC box uses the IPL address defined in HCD.

So I think I got that... when I try to do a load after a dynamic update
to hardware and software, the io devices are loaded from HSA. I have
validated that the channels are online and sharable. I have validated
that the io devices are assigned to all lpars. The one funny thing
though is when I looked at the CU via the I/O configuration utility I
saw a parm that said something like SHARED=N. I cant seem to find this
parm any ware in CU definitions in HCD.

On the production side, the purpose of the IODF update was to add vtl
devices. That device was installed today and the chpid, cu, and devices
all worked perfectly.

A little further down the path... I validated the new IODF against the
target system partition DEVL and sure enough device 1500,170 on chp(20)
cu 1500 is there in the i/o path list.

There is no wait state being generated, the process can't get to past
the load address.

Hmmm, any more thoughts? Agh, it is only test and devl, I don't need
those anyway, maybe I should just give up!

I will gladly provide any screen shots of the components if you thing
that will help.

Thanks again,

Tracy

The IOCDS is only used when you perform a Power On Reset. It is used to
load the hardware definition into the HSA. When you perform a hardware
activate, that updates the HSA with the information from the IODF. When
you
perform a software activation, that updates the UCB's in the operating
system that you run the software activate under. When you IPL, the IODF
is
read to load the UCB's for the specified OS configuration into the LPAR.

You have said that the device is defined in the IODF. Is it defined to
the
test LPAR? When you define a device, you also define which LPAR(s) can
use
it. Check the device, control unit and channels. Are the channel
defined
as shared or dedicated?

Re: cpu upgrade

2009-10-16 Thread Field, Alan C.
Or if I miss read you and you are changing say, a model 503 to a 703
the change is immediately recognized with no action by you.

A D M=CPU will show the new model e.g. CPC SI =
2094.703.IBM.02.000x

Nowadays, if you upgrade the cpu capacity, by having ibm just apply the
feature code to the box, does this take effect immediately on all the
lpars, or
must each lpar be ipl'd to pick up the new capacity?

Re: IODF Change...

2009-10-13 Thread Field, Alan C.
Do a D IOS,CONFIG command. Are you really running on the modified IODF
in the TEST LPAR?

When I want a specific IODF I change LOADxx and specify the IODF suffix
explicitly (normally run with **).

I have an IODF which has a mistake in it in regards to some new storage
we've attached...

CNTLUNIT CUNUMBR=5000,PATH=((CSS(0),B3,B2,82,83,40,41,D0,D1)),*
  UNITADD=((00,256)),CUADD=0,UNIT=2107
IODEVICE ADDRESS=(5000,228),CUNUMBR=(5000),STADET=Y,UNIT=3390B
IODEVICE ADDRESS=(50E4,028),CUNUMBR=(5000),STADET=Y,UNIT=3390A

The CUADD statements have the wrong value. They should be CUADD=50 etc
instead of CUADD=0 etc.
I altered the IODF and IPL'ed my test system, but the change has not
taken.
In other words, I still can't access the storage
From an init job...

ICK30713I UNABLE TO ALLOCATE UCB, RC=0008, RSN=0004 FROM IOSODS
ICK31024I UNABLE TO OPEN VOLUME.
ICK30003I FUNCTION TERMINATED. CONDITION CODE IS 12
  12:26:0010/13/09

I can't vary the paths online...

IEE386I PATH(5001,40) NOT BROUGHT ONLINE
IEE763I NAME= IECVIOPM CODE= 0004
IOS552I PATH NOT PHYSICALLY AVAILABLE
IEE764I END OF IEE386IRELATED MESSAGES

Assuming I'm not missing some other configuration issue, I should be
able
to change the IODF, IPL that LPAR and have the change take effect,
right?
No POR necessary, right?
What am I missing?
Thanks.

Re: IBM halves mainframe Linux engine prices

We have done that. I think it was $10,000 to convert an IFL to zIIP

For reasons I shall not get in to (as I probably don't have all of the
facts) we are planning on eliminating the IFL we currently have
when we go to our next machine.

You might try to get IBM to convert the IFL to a zIIP or a zAAP on your
current machine. Maybe you can get a discount on that. zIIP and zAAP
also
carry forward.
