You can quite easily saturate a host channel MP with small blocksizes. I haven't measured the 8S channels yet - we're just installing them - but I think that with non-zHPF and 4KiB single blocks they would run out of steam at around 200MB/sec (50K IOPS). No problem with me (in Belgium). *OA38742: DIFFERENCE in ASMIORQR / ASMIORQC COUNTS become LARGE ENOUGH to AFFECT FRAME STEAL PROCESSING and ASMIORQR INCREMENTED TOO HIGH* During AUX paging, I/O is scheduled to drive input and/or output I/O to auxiliary page packs. When an I/O error occurs and ASM I/O completion exit gets control in ILRCMP, the abnormal termination entry point ABNMTERM: gets control for the I/O error. When this happens, the ASM I/O is redriven, causing the ASVT ASM 'received' counts to be incremented twice, thus never allowing the 'completed' counts (ASMIORQC) to equal the 'received' counts (AMIORQR). If this continues for too long, the difference between the received-completed counts grows large enough to begin impacting RSM frame steal processing. IBM's Statement of Integrity clearly states that if a System Integrity Vulnerability (the Root Cause) is reported to IBM, they will fix it.Microsoft does not make this commitment and this is why the z/OS Operating System is a much more securable system than Windows. However, z/OS is not immune to these threats because it too has system integrity vulnerabilities. In your posting, you state that there are many alternatives to our Vulnerability Analysis Product for the ethical hacking/penetrating/scanning for defects and exposures. In fact, IBM purports to provide this capability from their Tivoli zSecure unit.On their zSecure Audit Website, they state: Security zSecure Audit includes a powerful system integrity analysis feature. Reports identify exposures and potential threats based on intelligent analysis built into the system. That's a pretty powerful and absolute statement. But, since Tivoli is part of IBM you can be assured that their Quality Assurance Unit regularly tests their software against revisions to the IBM z/OS Operating System and, if any integrity exposures were found, they would have reported the vulnerabilities to IBM z/OS Development and Development would have fixed them. That would just be the normal course of business within IBM. But, then, how can you reconcile the fact that our VAT product has located SIXTY SEVEN (67) new system integrity vulnerabilities in z/OS within the last two years. And, our clients have reported them to IBM, IBM has accepted them as errors, issued APARS for all of them and issued PTFs for almost all of them. So, obviously, the IBM Tivoli zSecure Audit package is not catching these errors. And, if IBM, is not catching these in their own code, what about the ones introduced by the rest of the Independent Software Vendor products and locally developed or otherwise obtained code on your system? There is a big vulnerability here that cannot be ignored. An exploit of a z/OS (or ISV) system integrity vulnerability would allow the illegitimate user to obtain control in an authorized state and use this state to change his security credentials to obtain access and be able to modify any RACF protected resource on the system with no SMF journaling of the access. We have found these integrity exposures in code that is in operation on every z/OS system in existence. That is something to be concerned about and to act on. I have no idea of the comparison between the cost of our Vulnerability Analysis Tool versus the competition. We would be happy to discuss that with you -- we believe it is inexpensive compared to the benefits which include not only a reduction of risk and exposure to data loss and modification which would result in exposure of company secrets, private information and financial loss, but a reduction of system outages. But, VAT works and locates the errors that other software/services do not.I can totally assure you that a manual process just will not work in our lifetimes. So, an automated process is necessary. And VAT provides that automation. additional processor?
*** cross-posted in IBM-MAIN, CICS-L, DB2-L *** Hi, If having the choice between a z10-BC with 2 or 3 processors, and if NOT taking (or having to take) into account the price aspect, is it possible to investigate wether a 2- or a 3-processor system might better suit us? I assume it may be possible to gather info about a latent demand for a processor. Where to look at in RMF, or in SMF to find this out? What about DB2 and/or CICS? DB2 and especially CICS do offer more and more parallellism. Any ideas if we can find this out within these subsystems? Hi Greg, Re. you saying ... you could check out the recently GA-ed ‘’Tivoli Asset Discovery for z/OS’’ which happens to employ some of the Dorana technology I helped write way back last millenium. This product is also the logical successor to TLCMz, if I'm not mistaken. Yes , you're right: ‘Tivoli Asset Discovery for z/OS’ (TAD4z) replaces ‘Tivoli License Compliance Manager for z/OS’ (TLCMz). I've been reading TAD4z 's InfoCenter http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v29r1/index.jsp SC27-2701-00 IBM Tivoli Asset Discovery for z/OS V7.2 Administration Guide and Reference (August 2009) http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v29r1/topic/com.ibm.tad4z.do c/c2727010.pdf But I couldn't dig up what I was looking for: will one of the reports display the CPU usage within each module? Or will it just help to identify those modules that are invoked by non-EXEC statement means? Like tour LLA exit did (still does) back last millenium? Where can I find the details (contents) of the TAD4z reports? I only find their names in Table 15. What happens in a DS8000 Metro Mirror (PPRC-Sync) config when the relationship between a volume pair is broken?
Hi, 1° What happens in a DS8000 Metro Mirror (PPRC-Sync) config when the relationship between a volume pair is broken, say, because of network problems? This network outage could for example last for hours. How does the system keep track of the source updates changes in the mean time, in order to resynchronize the volume pair later on? With the IBM FlashCopy SE feature, there is something like the copy repository where only the capacity needed to save pre-change images of the source data is allocated. Is there also kind of such a “copy repository” with Metro Mirror? If yes, has it to be sized? Or is the storage server capable of handling managing this by itself? Where can I find more info on this? Have any benchmarks or tests been done in this perspective? I would appreciate it utmost if you would route me to appropriate reading material? 2° I assume (dare hope) that the resynchronization process can be (or is) prioritized the right way in order to not perturbate the real usually ongoing I/O response time? Re: CFLEVEL 16 and it's structure sizing
Referring to: Scott Fagen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] donderdag , november 27, 2008 05:57 AM . From http://www-304.ibm.com/systems/support/z/cfsizer/ : CFSizer uses your input to calculate the number of structure objects the structure must contain, based on algorithms provided by the structure owners that model their use of the structure. Using these results and structure attribute information provided by the structure owners, CFSIZER THEN SUBMITS A CALCULATION REQUEST TO A COUPLING FACILITY, USING THE IXLCSP INTERFACE. The coupling facility itself calculates the structure size required to accommodate the specified input. Structure sizes therefore correspond to the CFLEVEL installed on the coupling facility that performs the calculations. THE CFLEVEL FOR WHICH THE RECOMMENDATIONS WERE CALCULATED IS DISPLAYED ON THE OUTPUT PAGE AND IS NOT SELECTABLE. Structure sizes are displayed in units of 1KB, as they would be entered in your CFRM policy. (emphases added) Hi Scott, That means you can't forecast structure size changes with CFSIZER when migrating from one level to another when you don't have already a CF at the new, higher level. I came across 'CFSizer Alternate Sizing Techniques' http://www-304.ibm.com/systems/support/z/cfsizer/altsize.html Method_2: The SIZER Utility Program (as-is unsupported!) In the accompanying document Dave Surman mentions: However, note that in order for the SIZER utility to be useful for this re-sizing purpose, you must already have provided a CF at the new ?uplevel? CFLEVEL in your installation, and it must be configured and active in your sysplex, with connectivity to the system on which the SIZER utility is being run. Conclusion: it seems there's no way to estimate future structure sizing requirements when having no access to a CF of the new/higher CFlevel?! Seems a bit strange to me. Is there no ROT when going to CFlvl 16 (as there once used to be one when migrating to CFlvl 12 if I recall well)? Timer Unit (TU) conversion to CPU time
*** Cross-posted in the IBM-MAIN IMS-L listservers) *** Hi, Either I’m getting old (or at least too old to understand), or I’m stupid, or I’m too tired to understand (after a long day gazing at my laptop screen) … One way of doing accounting for billing purposes in IMS is based on the DLRTIME field in the Application termination accounting log record (x’07’). (There’s also DLREXTIM field, which is new in IMS V10, while we are V9. Anyway this is not important in this discussion.) IMS TYPE07 log record CPU timer-unit field, DLRTIME, indeed allows to capture the CPU time used by a running transaction. This execution time is expressed in so-called “Timer Units (TU)”. TU is a z/OS notion (STIMER-, STIMERM-, TIME-, TTIMER-macros), not an IMS concept. ASKQQA item RTA60992 (19920318) about “TIMER UNITS (TU) conversion to CPU time” says: One timer unit (TU) is approximately 26.04166 microseconds. You can multiply that value with the number of TUs reported in the type x'07' log record. Looking into the latest SA22-7607-13 zOS V1R9.0 MVS Programming Assembler Services Reference Vol 2 (IARR2V-XCTLX) (iea2a981) (April 2008) timer units still are “approximately 26.04166 microseconds per unit” … After more than 16 years ago with a couple of technology changes much faster processor cycles, a TU still equals 26.04166 microseconds??? There is something I don’t understand …. The real question is: how can I take into account the technology evolution from a pre-z to a z machine (for example) in the accounting/billing scheme? Pls shed some light in the darkness of my mind. phonetic translation tool ?
Hi, We want to actualise some of our (Cobol, DB2, IMS) applications in order to deploy them in Central Europe. In order to support the typical Polish, Czech, Hungarian etc. character sets, the new application will be Unicode enabled. In this context, we are looking for a a phonetic translation tool. An example where this is used : The insurance call center needs to find a customer record and tries to look it up using the last name. It sounds like teu... but this means that it could be written like teu..., theu..., deu... etc. Entering teu... on the query panel would have to display all customer records that match the phonetic teu... Years ago we have developped some routines in assembler to do this kind of phonetic translation. Today, nobody overhere knows exactly how this works and with the need to support the new Central European languages, pronunciation and character sets, the challenge becomes even a lot more complex. Are you aware of tools or products that can help here? Domain of linguistics, translation or artificial intelligence? I started with http://www-306.ibm.com/ibmlink/link2/ttpu/displayTTPUPage.wss?lc=nlcc=US (so I changed the country code from BE to US) (watch a possible URL wrap) I got the regular (actually at least) ?Sign-in? page https://www-304.ibm.com/usrsrvc/account/userservices/jsp/login.jsp?persistPage=true (always watch URL wraps) where you have to enter your IBM_ID and password. I got to: ?Purchase/upgrade tools? page where I have this administration application ?Administer entitlement information? Clicking on it's hyperlink leads me too: https://www-304.ibm.com/jct03004c/ibmlink/entitleadmin/displayMenu.wss?action=mainlc=nlcc=US (watch the US ! It's still there.) with ?Entitlement Administration? Welcome to IBM Entitlement Administration. You can use this facility to provide companies and users access to applications. You can also register new companies and users, and update their demographic information. The menu on the left side of this page contains all the entitlement related tasks that are available Even though I did the whole trial in US mode, I have access to my company's profiles. I see in front of me actually page 'Update company profile' of my BE_company on url https://www-304.ibm.com/jct03004c/ibmlink/entitleadmin/customerNumber.wss?action=updatecompanyprofilelc=nlcc=US (so still with the US country code !) You definitely have a problem somewhere. Try the ?IBMLink customer support?: please use 'IBMLink feedback' or contact the help desk at 1-800-543-3912 which is a US number, ?cause when I logon in Europe, our help desk is somewhere in Germany. Clicking on the US ?IBMLink feedback? link will launch a secondary browser with: https://www-304.ibm.com/jct03004c/ibmlink/feedback/feedbackPage.jsp?lc=nlcc=US I tried it and I was able to launch it. (I didn?t pursue of course ;-) ) Remark: I just want to draw your attention on the fact that I started the whole thing with still a ? ibmlink/link2?? url even though link2 has been with drawn. But redirections have been put in place. Re. the 7 November 2006 news item: Announcing IBMLink 2000 Release 5.1 Changes in IBMLink 2000 On November 10, 2006, IBMLink 2000 Release 5.1 will be deployed. The following changes will occur in this release: Platform IBMLink will change its context root URL from www.ibm.com/ibmlink/link2 to www.ibm.com/ibmlink. This change will comply with ibm.com corporate direction. There will be no change in functionality from your perspective. Redirects will be put in place to guide you to the new URLs. ?etc? So I don't think the ...ibmlink/link2... stuff is your problem. Wish you good luck! Re: IBMLINK CSA
Dave, It's my understanding that you are already entitled by your country IBMLink coordinator as CSA. If so, access the IBMLink Purchase and Upgrade Tools Page at http://www-306.ibm.com/ibmlink/link2/ttpu/displayTTPUPage.wss?lc=nlcc=BE using your IBM Registration ID . . BE in the url being your country code. In my case, BE for Belgium. Select the Administer Entitlement Information link. From here users can be registered and deleted and the CSA role transferred. This all happens within the registered Company, so the CSA cannot see registration data outside his Company domain. To register a new user , the only information required is the IBM ID of that new user. Select User, Register User, complete the User Profile information page and everything is self explanatory. Upon completion, an email will be sent with the IBMLink userid of the new user. jan -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

Re: Favorite Service for Parallel Sysplex Aggregation?
Hi Timothy, Re. Speaking of paranoid, what has been your experience with concerns about XCF, console, and GRS risks? Yes, w've once had a nasty experience with XCF structures being too small hence impacting the whole sysplex (obviously ;-) ). But this could have been avoided if we would have 'known' our sysplex better. Parallel sysplex being a completely new discipline, there are no or a few ROTs at the start or you don't really know how to parametrize things. But, off you go. What has been our mistake? We should at least have done measurements and detect CHANGING or DEVIATING behaviours. We are striving at implementing since then KPIs (key point indicators). Consoles should be getting okay, I assume, with the console restructuring going on. Our above mentioned XCF problem was because of consoles, being the last straw. And GRS, theoretically yes of course. Like always It depends ;-) on your installation constellation. But it's a long time that I have heard about MIM detected problems with us (we are MIM). It's my firm conviction that you have to KNOW your sysplex. But this is a journey in which you are growing (we at least). I don't recall exactly when, but we started more than 10 years ago I think, it's only now that we feel comfortable with it. I think it's also good practice to set up an equipe which has the parallel sysplex ownership; composed of members of each of the main exploiters, MVS, IMS, DB2, MQ, networking plus an operations guy and a performance measurement guy. Just one last remark... we had (still have) a price plex with production, development and acceptation all in the same plex. But there is a project going on to split off production in it's own plex. Hope it helps you one step further. Re: IBMLink Internet access out to lunch again?
Bruce and all others, I suggest we all open a PMR each time IBMLink is out to lunch in stead of calling the 800 number and getting upset by Bruce's wonk (*). Re: PPRC status display reporting
Hi Itschak, I got this extract out of a PMR from a friend IBM-er about ANTTREXX: I have confirmed with development, and ANTTREXX is an undocumented and unsuppored interface that we have plans to remove the module from z/OS. If you have any questions please let me know. To which the local technical support guy replied by: I'm not sure how we can now say this is an undocumented and unsupported interface when we released PTFs over a year ago (UA12273 et al) which provide (among other things) ANTPTSO and documentation (in the PTF) about how it is to be used to invoke ANTTREXX. ... * R1G0 ptf UA12273 date = 04/08/05, 2 years old (yy/mm/dd). So this extract must be about one year old. * My IBM-er will look further into it in his spare time (if any). Otherwise it would be better to open a PMR ask the actual status about the ANTTREXX interface. When I've more news, I'll let you know. Is it possible to find out how many subroutine calls per IMS transaction?
*** cross-posted to IMS-L IBM-MAIN *** *** Caveat: I'm more a MVS guy rather than an IMS guy. *** Hi, Got this question from a collegue: Is it possible to know how many subroutine calls are done per IMS transaction in BMPs and MPPs? These are my reflections when I was thinking it over. Please comment! * Static calls are certainly not 'visible', while control is passed with a branch (R15/R14). From a MVS perspective, it would be possible to trace the SVC's for LINK, XCTL, CALL, etc... But MVS is not able to find out what an IMS transaction is, I think. It's the IMS Program Controller, DFSPCC20, which starts a transaction. Is there a SVC behind the DFSPCC20 scene which performs the load for a pgm? Another aspect: preloaded pgms. With preloaded pgm's, one doesn’t even know when a transaction starts (I guess the control is passed via the usual register 14/15 stuff?). Other aspect: REENTERABLE vs NON-Reenterable programs. Once a reenterable pgm is loaded, it will never be loaded again. How is the control passed to such subroutine after it has been loaded the first time? Can something be done based on the program scheduling '08' log record for a transaction and it's counterpart the X'07'termination record? Might LE have an added value in this area? * Are tools available in the market place which are able to monitor or to measure this? * I would appreciate your comments. Re: Is it possible to prevent a structure into a particular CF (Coupling Facility)?
George and co, Thanks for the pointer to the redbook. I'm aware of it, it's a good one, but it doesn't go deep enough. About OA11719, the so-called 'CF HINT' functionality, with the SITE parameter : it looks to me that this new function is only applicable to duplexed structures. Let me explain what my fears are. 2 sites: Site-1 with 2 CECs, running production with IMS DB2 data sharing + certain duplexed structures (system- DB2-duplexed) Site-2 the recovery site with the PPRC-ed disks with the controlling K-sys (The advantage of this is that the Controlling system will continue to be available even if a disaster takes down the whole production site.). Actually we are only interested in the HyperSwap Manager functionality. Unlike the full GDPS/PPRC offering, GDPS/PPRC HM does not provide any resource mgt or recovery mgt capabilities. That's at least what the GDPS redbook says. Hence a 1-st important question, which has to be answered first: does the K-system in Site-2 have to belong to the very same parallel sysplex as the production systems in Site-1? I am not sure at all, precisely because HM hasn't recovery mgt capabilities. If K-sys on the contrary has to belong to the cross-site production sysplex, we need signalling. Either via CTCs, or via CF signalling structures. We prefer the CF way, because of more modern because of the fact that we would need a CF anyway in disaster mode. So we have a CF at the D/R site. Q2. We are not that sure at all that we are able to keep our (production) structures at the site-1 CFs with PREFLIST ENFORCEORDER(YES). For example, what happens with a duplexed structure (at production Site-1) when one of the site-1 CFs goes down? George co, Add-on to my previous post about apar OA11719: == quote from within the apar That new 'CF HINT' capability can be used to provide the name of the recovery site when indicating that a recovery mgr is active. ... When a recovery mgr is active, MVS will keep the duplexed structure instance at the recovery site when stopping duplexing for a potential site failure. end-of-quote 2 remarks: 1° As indicated earlier in my previous post, GDPS/PPRC HM (HyperSwap Mgr) does not provide any resource mgt or recovery mgt capabilities. So this apar doesn't seem to be exploitable with GDPS/PPRC HM. 2° it looks to me as if this functionality is applicable on structures duplexed in site-1 (production) site-2 (disaster) Jan -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Is it possible to prevent a structure into a particular CF (Coupling Facility)?
Hi, We are doing a GDPS pre-study. On Site-1 we have 2 footprints with 2 (I)CFs, running production. Disks are PPRC connected to the disaster recovery (DR) site: Site-2. GDPS requires a K-sys (controlling system) at Site-2, preferably with a CF, and making part of the SAMEe (production) sysplex in Site-1. (= GDPS requirements). * Is there a way to *prevent* that structures will be put into this 3-rd CF at DR site-2 in *NORMAL OPERATION mode*, i.e. when the whole production is running in site-1? We think it can't be accomplished with just specifying the PREFLIST, listing the preference order of CFs that one wants structures to be allocated to. * Any experience and/or good avices with this?
