[ilugd]Re: giving root privileges to a function]

2004-02-26 Thread arundeep singh
given the availability of so many
 libraries and abstractions,
why do you need to access a h/w directly?

well i am still not directly communicating with
hardware
using java. i am making to some C functions from java
that requires root privileges.

[ilugd] Re: giving root privileges to a function

2004-02-26 Thread arundeep singh
Now this looks like an interesting problem.
Possible solution maybe to run the JVM in privileged
 mode with a security
policy defined for JVM disallowing access to other
 system resources.
 -Tarun

well it seems good to me, but could u just tell how to
do that, as i was thinking the same but don't anything
abt it.

Re: [ilugd] Where is linux-delhi proposed Forum??

2004-02-26 Thread Avinesh Bangar
Uh, if we already have a working forum/discussion board why do we need
another one? Specially if the other one costs money? Use the one
Nishikant had made, save the money and buy him something nice as a
token of appreciation -- perhaps a gift voucher at Amazon or
 something.

Hmm, may I suggest that there be a PayPal (http://www.paypal.com) donation
link on the main page, so that members can contribute funds to offset the
cost of hosting and development time? :-)

Regards,
 Avinesh

[ilugd] New laptop advertised

2004-02-26 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
An ad today in the Business section of HT sells a model of compaq
(2184at) for Rs. 45k with Mandrake 9.1 ( a welcome change from Turbo
Linux in many other machines like LG MyPC).

Anybody here has any experience with these low end Compaq laptops? Are
they worth the money?

I will agree. Although development can be taken care of by members to some
extent, not all hosting is possible on a volunteer basis.

LinuxISO.org: http://www.linuxiso.org/ Fairly good (~2.2 Mbps) bandwidth on

game plan. We might have some demos/discussion on
programing tools in this meet, depending on the
availability of infrastructure( i mean PC'S).

[ilugd] OpenSource Accounts package [was]:[LIH]Kalculate

2004-02-26 Thread Sudev Barar
This in context of Mukunds post on LIH.

During the recent LinuxAsia2004 at Delhi my discussions with many people
dropping in at The ILUG-Delhi stall is summarised as:
1: OpenSource is muft and mukt is alluring to Indian psyche.
2: Linux is ready for adoption in SME world of India business.
3: OO and Evolution are first killer apps that have lent to this
attitude.
4: What is missing is a Tally like package. (Also ack. the fact that
majority Tally use is off-license!!) And converters for old data from
popular packages.

Can some forum be formed to support / adapt any existing FLOSS project?
Can Indian FLOSS community work like this and show that we can make
excellent community source package?

Comments criticism or eyeopeners if I have missed any such existing
package.
