[ilugd] [OT] debian cds

2004-08-27 Thread vivek khurana
Hello all,

If you are a debian freak this is for you. I have
got 7 cds of sarge d-i as on 7th august 2004. Complete
sarge d-i is in 13 cds and i am in process of
downloading remaining. But to install a desktop only
first 3 are sufficient.

If you want debian on cds, you can get it from me,
just come to my place with blank cds.

Regards
VK

Well we could go on adding to the list pick your favourite application
here. But that is not the point.

On first level, a CD with magazine could be a alternative to downloaded
junkie. But that has become common minimum denominator.
To increase the level of interest in the CD, it should carry the
eco-system around a particular theme rather then just bunch of
utilities. Utilities can be downloaded easily now but the eco-system
around it cannot be. You need certain sense of understanding of
application and the context of the application.

It would be much more enriching experience for the reader if eco-system
and the context of application is explained and stuff related to it is
shipped in the CD.

Re: [ilugd] knoppix 3.6

2004-08-27 Thread ChP
One opportunity to ask a question.

How does one upgrade a Knoppix installation. I have enjoyed the Knoppix
ditros given on the Linux For You CDs but when I find something nice and
interesting on a new version how do I carry out a selective install/ upgrade
from the new Knoppix CD? Installing from another distro is fine using alien
and dpkg.

As an after thought, here's another question; How does one split the distro
installed on Hard disk onto multiple partitions, say a /dev/hda5 for /home
and a /dev/hda6 for /opt ??

Thanks

I dont belive you can upgrade knoppix distro. Only
script shipped with knoppix is one to install
knoppix. Anywayz whatever you find exciting in new
knoppix distro can be easily installed using apt.

As an after thought, here's another question; How
 does one split the distro
installed on Hard disk onto multiple partitions, say
 a /dev/hda5 for /home
 and a /dev/hda6 for /opt ??

Say you want to move your home folder to /dev/hda5,
so this is how you do this.
-- Format /dev/hda5 and give it a label /home.
-- Move all the directories under /home from existing
installation to /dev/hda5
-- delete /home from existing installation
-- edit /etc/fstab and specify /dev/hda5 as /home
mount point with default values.
-- run mount and you will have your your /home from
/dev/hda5
-- repeat for other partitions and folders as per
need.
