[ilugd] Which is the best distro for 64 bit
Hi, Which is the best distro available for running 64 bit kernel? I'm having Acer Aspire 5002 NWLi based on AMD Turion. I've had intial problems in installing 32 bit linux as well. Will be greatful if you could help on them... 1. FC4 is not going beyond partition step. It says unable to send few Kernel parameters to one of the partions. Same problem appeared on my AMD Athon based PC (runs SATA hdd). But, installed fc4 on my pentium based workstation without any problem!! Any idea what could be the problem? 2. Then I picked up Mandrakelinux 10.1 for my laptop (acer turion), and it installed without any issues. Problem comes in starting the KDE(or any desktop). Problem seemed to be around setting up the resolution. I tried using xf86cfg and could set a max of 856x480 resolution. My laptop supports 1024x800 resultion though. regards Sanjay ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

I googled Nitin and found this command, Nitin # dd if=/dev/hdb of=/dev/hda5 bs=512 conv=noerror, sync I Nitin tried it, but to my utter surpise, it didnt copied Nitin anything, or if it did, it did all of it in binary again, Nitin which is not readable. :( You only need to copy the specific blocks where your mail folder is. That's why you use the -b flag to fgrep (to find out the byte offset where your text was found). Once you have the byte offset, the chances are that the rest of the mail file will also be around there somewhere. So you convert the byte offset to a block number and use dd with the options I'd given you to extract the file from the partition. Blindly giving commands that you find on the 'net isn't going to do much for you. Nitin How can i get the data readable?? I am mainly looking out Nitin for my emails and databases, but it would be gr8, if i can Nitin get all of it, as all of it is still there ( i greped it Nitin and it showed up) . Say i have a file called nitin.txt, so i want to recover it as a whole, is anything possible with it?? I googled throughout the day, but didnt found any effective method? This was discussed at foss.in, and amongst ourselves, and has also found support from the NRCF, etc. It might even be possible to find funding for part of the time for someone developing and maintaining such a site. The site itself will most likely be hosted at linux-india. We are planning to meet at 7pm tomorrow, 18/1, at Raj Mathur's place to discuss this.
