[ilugd] Shocking and Sad news.

2012-12-12 Thread Kishore Bhargava

12-12-12. What a very very sad day. We lost a very dear friend, Raj Mathur.

People who knew and have met Raj will always remember him as a lively
and humourous person - brutally honest and a man of principles.

Raj was a founder member of the Indian Linux Users Group and a very
active member of the Free and Open Source community. Well respected and
extremely knowledgable, he was often sought after for advice which he
readily dispersed.

Raj loved to have fun and encouraged everyone around him to do the same.
He loved his food, his movies, his music and being with friends and family.

A brilliant hacker and much respected for his pioneering work, he will
be missed by one and all.

Rest in peace, Raj Oldmonk Mathur.

 Hi,

My deepest condolences.
I have many happy memories of running into Raj at a coffee shop that I used
to frequent-- and many times Raj would insist on ordering a capuchinno for
me too.

This is shocking-- what happened exactly to Raj ?

Was he unwell ? OR was it a accident OR violence ?

Also, if there is a address / link to the rituals-- even I would like to go
and offer my condolences.

Regards,

Nalin
ps: Request Kishore or any others who are aware to send me a unicast email.

pps: mailed Kishore/Niyam-- but incase anyone else is online at this hour
and aware of details regarding last rites-- incase they happen tomorrow
early-- do also feel free to drop me a email.

This is really shocking. Read the email several times to believe it.

Had the pleasure of working with Raj on a project for Accenture, running
around to buy stuff (under his guidance) for a ilugd event and a new years

Re: [ilugd] Shocking and Sad news.

2012-12-12 Thread Viksit Gaur
That's really sad news.

Raj was my first link to ILUG-D when I pinged him after seeing his email on the
linux-india mailing lists, back in 1997-98. Over the years, he became a great
friend and mentor, and I learned a lot from him. He was also a regular on IRC,
well respected across various networks and that was probably the easiest means
of staying in touch with him remotely.

Some of my most enduring memories are of him organizing meetups at his place
and offering an endless supply of excellent coffee with cream over discussions
about all sorts of technology; of the initial linux asia conferences, of
freed.in, and the many late night jaunts to defcol that became a defining
feature of ilugd meets.

He was a man of principles, sticking by his guns and openly questioning
anything he didn't believe in. His warm personality, great sense of humour and
his insightful opinions on a wide variety of topics will be greatly missed.

Rest in peace, Raj.

[ilugd] Here is the last one for Raj

2012-12-12 Thread Supreet Sethi
Yesterday's news, of Raj moving on, is shocking. I met him through ilugd
and came to know better of him through various activities of ilugd that he
helped organize. He was brutally honest and that made him special. He was
special because with those piercing words, he could get through to you
better. Yesterday night, I visited his drawing room, which played host to
many linux-dellhi events. Niyam playfully called it opium den. The opium
den was filled with people, Andrew, Gora and Friji. The trade-mark green
camouflage was lying life-less on the low diwan. For a second, I imagined a
cup of coffee and creme, which was kind of ritual commencement of
linux-delhi meetings, with Kishore bringing the coffee and Raj arranging
for cups and creme. The cup of coffee is not there any more, that table is
missing and more importantly Raj has checked out of the opium den.

special because with those piercing words, he could get through to you
